Overrated video games...and why anyone who likes those games

Post » Sun Sep 09, 2012 5:13 pm

Damn Sentinel you SCARY!

No but really I enjoyed Assassin's Creed, I agree the climbing could be a bit more controlled and less automated but overall I enjoy it and its fun setting up a good assassination at the right time.

I get annoyed by these kind of threads, just more complaining, nobody better start an underated game thread either.

I don't want anyone starting some - I liked it before it was cool- comments.

It all depends on where you ask. Call of Duty is probably a very underrated series on these forums. :P

WARNING: This post may contain large amounts of subjectivity.

Bethesda games. They're good, but it seems like so many people exaggerate the quality and diversity of their games, especially in the story-telling department. Whenever a new Bethesda game is announced, people get so hyped about and when it comes out it gets the best reviews because it's Bethesda. Reviewers exaggerate the greatness and 'epicness' of their story-telling, but in truth, they're mostly cliche and full of plot holes. If any other less known game developer made Fallout 3 the exact same way it is I bet it would be called out for it's mediocre story. Same with Skyrim. It's also annoying when people say if Bethesda gets hold of a franchise, they'd make it better than the original developer. I got mildy and discreetly pissed off when a certain forum member said that STALKER 2 would be even better if Beth makes it, of course they'd make it better! Why? Because Bethesda ;Bethesda doesn't do atmosphere or realism like GSC did with STALKER, so there's no explanation or evidence that they'd make it better, other than because it's Bethesda.

Like I said, their games aren't bad for what they accomplish, which is usually a large and explorable game world and... other things. But the whole 'Bethesda does everything right with their games' thing is played out. There are quite a few people that do admit Skyrim doesn't have a good story but they still like it, but not enough that it's not overrated.

Just because Bethesda has gotten a reputation for making 'great' games (not my words but whatever) doesn't mean they should instantly get a 10/10 from every reviewer and most players like they do.

GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption, while some of my favorite games, are pretty overrated. I loved GTA IV and even I thought that it didn't deserve a perfect 10 and while RDR has a good story its lacks longevity pass the main story and those side missions. There's literally no reason for me to waste my time with those challenges. Rockstar in general is kind of overrated to be honest.

CoD's pretty overrated but I can understand why people love it so much. Hell I'd probably love it as much as it's fans do if I had LIVE and $60 to spare.

I'd say they're actually pretty good games if they weren't full price $60, since they have way less content than most games, even for a shooter, I think $30- $40 is a better price, but that would never happen.

-God Of War series.

Again aimed at the 13 year old suburban kid audience. Some badass warrior thats basically hercules' story ripped off and then thrown with a bunch of flashy moves and giant monsters to make it seem badass.
Game can be completed by anybody, including senile old lady thats never played a video game before.
All the big boss battles are stupid "hit square then x then triangle within 10 seconds!! oh my god that was so hardcoe!"
Terrible unrealistic blood graphics and needless [censored] everywhere to get those 13 year olds to be all like "Beeewwbs!!"
Main character is grossly overrated as being badass. Hes just a terrible Cliche.

Also go take a look at your diablo 2 instruction booklets if you have them. Go look for a picture of the Barbarian class. Look familiar? I think its Krato's twin!! too bad diablo 2 was made before kratos was around.

Your reasons are all wrong. It's an awesome game because it's [censored] fun to rip everyone apart and assert your dominance.

Why do people think "games 13 year olds play " means lacking completely in difficulty, depth, complexity and gameplay?
When I was thirteen I played Morrowind.

Minecraft. I just don't get it. Being thrust into a game world with no clear objectives, no semblance of a plot, no other characters to interact with, and full of cliched, boring enemies isn't my idea of fun. At all. I tried several times to get into it, but I can't.

And don't even get me started on how user unfriendly the game is. I shouldn't have to do a ton of internet research just to learn the basics of a video game.

Pretty much. I consider a game overrated when it has a large number of fans who don't point out any flaws and blindly defend it. Look at some of the posters on Skyrim discussion trying to defend Skyrims plot. Why don't they just admit story telling isn't Skyrims strong suit?

The only games I find overrated are Halo, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and I'm gonna also have to say Minecraft. I don't see how people can spend hours upon hours on Minecraft or any of these games

JRPG's have grown/moved on from that quite a bit. Turn based style JRPGs are not the only JRPGs. Demons Souls, Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma being some recent and rather good examples.

Aren't the Souls games technically WRPGs even though they were made in Japan (I could be completely wrong, just something I remember reading)?

No, they are JRPGs trying to be WRPGs. For me, Dark Souls is like Castlevania in 3D.

In general:

Blizzard games
Valve games
Nintendo games
Bioware games
Halo series

Specific games that spring to mind:

GoldenEye (good, but I want to slap people who talk about it like it's the pinnacle of FPS gaming)
Planescape: Torment (good, but I find a lot of the fans intolerable. The praise it gets seems magnified by the fact that it wasn't a huge commercial success. It's sort of become the hipster's choice of RPG)
Skyrim (more overhyped than overrated I guess. A lot of fans seem to recognise now that it's really not that amazing)

I'm tempted to say Call of Duty due to it's commercial success, but calling the series overrated seems wrong given the amount of hate it gets. The games deserve neither the excessive financial success or the extreme hate in my opinion.

I really feel like most of Obsidian's games are overrated. This doesn't mean they're bad, and I like New Vegas and Kotor 2 as much as I liked Fallout 3 and Kotor 1...it's just that I don't think they're the second coming of Christ. People seem frantic and desperate to distance themselves from Fallout 3 and Kotor 1, claiming that only gloriousu Obsidianu can make video games.

Too many sychophants. Games are good, but they're not that good. That's overrated.
New Vegas is definitely among my top five favourite games, but I have to agree. New Vegas is a masterpiece, but it is definitely a flawed masterpiece, it annoys me when some [censored] of the game unleash a whole torrent of vitriol on any criticism of any aspect of the game, however valid or subjective.

As for downright underwhelming games, the one that comes to mind most readily is Mass Effect. I've spent ten hours in the game, and while some of the ideas are cool and I really dig space opera, I just do not like how a lot of the ideas and features were implemented, and the game just failed to grip me on an emotional or intellectual level. It also felt a lot like a game designed for and way more suited to the consoles instead of keyboard and mouse, which is never not offputting.

I also think a lot of older games are overrated. I feel like nostalgia really distorts the amount of flaws you're willing to put up with in a game.

Actually, in terms of story at least, I think the Halo games are underrated. It blends a mix of Norwegian legends and myths to a sci-fi world and an alien collective that is kept flimsily together because of the different politics and agendas of all the alien races (and the fact that they are all united under a banner of lies and doom).

It's more interesting and intriguing than most popular shooters out there. Hell, why are we still demanding a proper movie based on the franchise after all these years?

of course, this is only my honest opinion.

Aren't the Souls games technically WRPGs even though they were made in Japan (I could be completely wrong, just something I remember reading)?

Depends on who you ask. Folks like myself would say that a 'JRPG' isn't defined by any specific game mechanics, but rather the term simply covers RPGs made in Japan.

After all, early RPGs made by Japanese developers were heavily inspired by Western titles like Wizardry. One of the first RPGs that proved to be successful in Japan was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Onyx, made by Henk Rogers. Its success led many Japanese gamers to import the Wizardry and Ultima games and among the fans of these games was Yuji Horii, who went on to create the Dragon Quest series. Unlike the computer RPGs that inspired him, however, Dragon Quest featured more simplistic gameplay systems and an intuitive UI designed for consoles and a controller. Dragon Quest essentially created the console-style RPG genre which in turn influenced the NES ports of games like Ultima III and Wizardry (which released after Dragon Quest II).

So, trying to classify JRPGs and WRPGs based on gameplay systems hasn't made a whole lot of sense even from the very beginning, less you risk calling games like Ultima Japanese RPGs. :P If you're dead set on classification through gameplay then computer RPG vs. console-style RPG makes much more sense, though even those lines have blurred in recent years as PC developers took to consoles and PC/console games have become homogenized.

Al Capone made buckets of money, and he was still an [censored] and a drain on society. Usually when something does svck the popularity/financial success excuse pops up, none of those games svck though. CoD is definently oversaturating the market recently.

I think I can sum this thread up pretty effectively.

Any popular game = overrated
How can something be overrated if it isn't popular?

Why do people think "games 13 year olds
http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1410288-overrated-video-gamesand-why-anyone-who-likes-those-games-are-just-plain-wrong/page__pid__21521142__st__30# " means lacking completely in difficulty, depth, complexity and gameplay?
When I was thirteen I played Morrowind.
Because it saves time to say "Games thirteen yo's play" than to actually say "It lacks in difficulty, depth, complexity and gameplay" and everyone knows what you mean/

Skyrim, for sure.

I would say CoD, but the devs actually put e-nicotine in the game so it remains physically addictive.
