Ok well im not gonna say that people who like these games are "wrong" or anything, but im gonna try to put out the points as to why i think they are sub-par or overrated games.
Now heres my lists of what i think are overrated games, and why i think so.
This is all just subjective mind you. What im saying isnt law and im not saying its 'fact'. Feel free to disagree with me or whatever.
-Call Of Duty The Entire Series.
Ok now these games are hugely overrated as greatest shooters ever when in reality they are sub par to terrible games. They are designed terribly and half assed and always have terrible game mechanics. These games get released about one every 12 to 16 months and when they bring in new content, they remove equally as much content.
All in all, all new call of duty games are just mods of Call of Duty 4 basically (the best call of duty btw).
These games are simple quick paced shooters and good for small bursts of mind numbing entertainment,
but they definitely do not deserve the recognition they get from the overall gaming media.
-Assassins Creed Series.
These games got big of the fact that assassins and assassinating people are cool. The games themselves are sub par games. They make good cities and ok animation transitions, ill give them that. But in every other aspect they are terrible games. The first one was literally 3 missions over and over again, complete crap. The second one at least tried to redeem itself and had a lot more content, but in the end the game itself was very dull.
All the games are literally made for young teenagers in mind. To play the game you just have to hold the sprint button and you can go in pretty much any direction you want, walls be damned. Theres no way to fail in climbing, as your character is always successful and can climb lightning speed for hours on end.
Combat is even easier, as you can be surrounded by 20 guys trying to kill you and all you got to do is hold the block button and hit one other button whenever they attack and you can kill all 20 guys without getting hurt using no skill at playing the game at all. The timing for the counterattack is ridiculously easy as well, giving you a window of like 2 seconds when they attack so counter attacking is impossible to fail at.
The games themselves arent that bad and can be entertaining to someone who doesnt want to play complicated games at the time, they're good for that at least. But i think they are overrated in that every video game website and tv show revere these games and they arent quality games that deserve that much recognition.
Though i have to admit they are making the games better with every installment, instead of making them worse like most franchises.
-World of Warcraft.
Again these games are made for the casual gamer in mind. They are definitely successful in getting people who dont play games into gaming and online gaming at that. I actually know lots of people who play almost no games at all but they play world of warcraft. From a business standpoint, this game is a major success.
As an overall game i think its hugely overrated in that i have seen it on way too many top 10 rpg of all time lists out there and just makes me sick. As far as RPGs go, it is very sub par. Sure its a fun game for tons of people, but as hardcoe rpgs go, it doesnt even hold a candle to that genre, and ive seen it on way too many top games of all time lists.
Another thing that really irks me about this game is that you can be a loyal player whos played this game for X amount of years, spent 500+ dollars overall into this game and who knows how many hours on top of that. Then, in the end, when your time runs out you get locked out of your game, characters and all the time/money youve put into it are gone until you fork out some more cash, regardless of how long youve been playing.
Is the game really worth upwards of 500 dollars just to play it for years? I mean i still play my old Morrowind games that i paid 30 bucks for years ago, and i can still play it. Is world of warcraft worth that much more then morrowind? Its that much a better game? I dont think so.
And in the long run THATS why i think its Overrated. ^^
-Force Unleashed series.
Just a mindless hack and slash, meant for 13 year olds again. A whole bunch of flashy colours and moves, but when you get down to the raw game, very very sub par.
Pretty much god of war clone but with a jedi instead.
I think they just get the young audience by having some [censored] jedi guy that thinks hes hardcoe and for some [censored] reason holds his lightsaber backwards cus hes that badass. Also terrible placement in the storyline, so many flaws that i really dont feel like listing off right now. But lets just say, very terrible games, and very over rated,
-God Of War series.
Again aimed at the 13 year old suburban kid audience. Some badass warrior thats basically hercules' story ripped off and then thrown with a bunch of flashy moves and giant monsters to make it seem badass.
Game can be completed by anybody, including senile old lady thats never played a video game before.
All the big boss battles are stupid "hit square then x then triangle within 10 seconds!! oh my god that was so hardcoe!"
Terrible unrealistic blood graphics and needless [censored] everywhere to get those 13 year olds to be all like "Beeewwbs!!"
Main character is grossly overrated as being badass. Hes just a terrible Cliche.
Also go take a look at your diablo 2 instruction booklets if you have them. Go look for a picture of the Barbarian class. Look familiar? I think its Krato's twin!! too bad diablo 2 was made before kratos was around.
-Final Fantasy 7.
Now the game itself isnt that bad, and as far as final fantasy games go, it fits the bill pretty well actually. Im not actually saying the game itself is bad here, but it is definitely overrated.
I have seen this game on WAAAY too many top X RPG games of all time, and at number 1 most of the time as well. Sorry but as far as RPGS go, this game does not even fit the bill, let alone deserve number 1 of all time.
Hell this game isnt even the best final fantasy game.
The story was lame and predictable, the characters all very very unlikeable. (i hate cloud with a passion, but not as much as tidus from FF10 - see below)
The RPG elements are very shallow and do not deserve to be on any top RPG lists. Theres no character customization, level customization, story choices, replay value.
The materia system was flawed to hell. (you can literally kill the last boss in 1 hit with a combination of Counter, Triple and Master Summon or Counter, Triple and Master Magic)
In the end its still not a bad final fantasy game, but this game is one of the most overrated video games of all time.
-Final Fantasy 10.
Ok now this game was the worst Final fantasy game ive ever played. (was also the last actually, stopped after this, and they made FF10-2)
The voice acting is one of the biggest flaws. All of the voice acting was terribly done and sounded like a bunch of people who were just reading their lines and not throwing any emotion with the context of the story. (tidus actually being the exception on this. Must of got an actual voice actor for him)
At least before they had voices you imagined what their voices would sound like, as well as there'd be more dialogue without voice overs. Plus all the previous final fantasties had pretty good personality with their written dialogue.
The characters were very very very unlikeable. I hated Tidus's doucheyness. He was just so damn annoying and had such an annoying personality. Wakka was even worse, especially as a guy that went to battle with a soccer ball, come on now.. Auron had no personality, same with lulu. Yuna was alright i guess, and rikku i had no idea who her character was by the end of the game.
The story concept was stupid and very lame. The story execution was done just as bad and just as stupid.
The only thing that was good about this game was the graphics over the other games, and that was just cus it was newer.
At first with the sphere grid added into the game i thought "damn this is really customizable!!!'. But then you realize that everyone has their set path anyway, and in the end, every character is basically identical to each other because everybody fills out the sphere grid anyway and learns every ability.
-Dragon Age Origins.
This game was dubbed the spiritual successor to bauldurs gate. Using the same engine and all, it was pretty much supposed to be next greatest rpg ever.
In the end the game is a slow paced WoW clone. It literally felt waay too much like world of warcraft to me. The way the skills worked out and everything, it was just a single player WOW.
Now i played this game before i played bauldurs gate, so at the time i wasnt even comparing it to baudlurs gate 2. I even did a couple characters and got about half way through the game with each.
The mages pissed me off, i hated their stupid ass pointy hats that looked gay as [censored].
I hated how slow paced and mind numbing the actual gameplay was. A year after i played this game i tried bauldurs gate 2 and my mind was blown with that game, whereas this game i was sorely dissapointed, especially cus i see it on waay to many top rpg lists as well.
I mean i guess as far as RPGS go, its pretty decent, well at least the concept is when creating the character and all. But the actual execution of gameplay is where it was a huge dissapointment.
All in all its still not a bad game, i just think its overrated.
Also i never played the second as i have no desire to, so i cant rate that one fairly.
