Playing an Idiot

Post » Sun Jan 09, 2011 8:51 am

Those of us who have played the first two games will recall how hilarious but outrageousaly tricky it was to play a character with an Intelligence of 3. Few characters would speak to you, and those that did, trewated you like a child. The classic response was often 'urk'. The main quest was almost completely rewritten, forcing you to stumble about like a wasteland [censored] wqwith all your allies and adversaries shaking theior head in pity. And it. Was. GLORIOUS!

My question, will this gem of CRPG gameplay once again be used in New Vegas?

Kind of. Instead of grunting you just won't get the general gist of what people are saying.

As far as I recall, it's been said there WILL be stupid dialogue, but not to the same effect as Fallout and Fallout 2 had.

I don't recall this. They just said it would be in the game, they didn't actually say anything about it.

I may be wrong, but I wanna say it was Chris Avellone who said this, or it may be a rumor. After 4-5 months of intense data absorbtion, it all blends together. Hence I think Fallout New Vegas starts out with a package who is shot by a courier who tries to use casinos to control the Marcus.

I am not funny. Idiot plays you.

I never noticed that lol. Only had one playthrough, and everything was always quite even. That's pretty funny though.

They did say there would be stupid dialogue, but are you sure it doesn't make your character mentally challenged? I hope it does. Then again, a character that is generally stupid but can still understand a lot can still be funny.

this is the first time i heard that in fallout 3 people treated you differently if you were really dumb.....

I would try this, but not in my first playthrough, maybe fourth, after i have done the game in all the major factions...

Dude, if you have a low INT character, you must go talk to Torr in Klamath in FO2. He himself was lacking in the mental department, so when your character goes to talk to him, you both understand eachother and communicate fluently. It's hilarious and awesome.

From what I've heard about FNV, there will be dumb dialogue, but not like in the originals. Basically if you try to say something in a conversation your character isn't knowledgeable about, you'll end up saying something kinda dumb. It's just failing a skill check, basically.

EDIT: This of course raises the question of why you'd ever choose to say the dumb line. The devs have said its because these lines can be rather funny and elicit funny responses from characters (if I remember right).

I would think if you have low int the "dumb lines" should be your only options.

Its posted somewhere... An example (a totally made up example), would be something like this...
Smart Guy says: "The generator is missing it's spark-plugs, it won't work without them."
Dunce Says: "Uhh... that thing is broken Its missin' parts, it won't work without them."

It looks like its just string substitution, (of part of the sentence).

Right. I think the idea in current game design is to be more accessible and forgiving, though. Having low INT in the original games really crippled your dialogue options (conversely, high INT meant you could say some brilliant things, like arguing about chemistry with Myron in FO2). Personally I like it better that way, but whatever.

Its a sad change. :sadvaultboy:

Intelligence of 3? Fallout 1 and 2? I don't EVER recall seeing that happen, but that's AWESOME xD

But hey, I never played Fallout with my stats ever being lower than 4/5 xD

For many people, playing an idiot will not require a low stat, it will just occur naturally.

There is only one instance in Fallout 3 of low-INT dialogue; go to Roosevelt Academy and speak to the Protrectron. He'll treat you like a "special needs" student and escort you to class.

I haven't played Fallout or Fallout 2, but it sounds like it was much more interesting in those games.

From the wiki:

"According to the May 2010 edition of gaming magazine Game Informer, low intelligence conversations will be more prevalent in Fallout New Vegas. In place of the gibberish of past games however, the PC will simply not completely understand a conversation, confusing what someone is saying with something else entirely, and not understand what situation he is currently in. It is not currently known how often these options will appear or to what extent. "

Well, I think the job of a courier kind of warrants not having the same kind of wacky dumbness as in F2. Fine by me if I merely get simplified versions of the usual speech or just general confusion and lack of understanding. Combined with the dialogue you get when you are not skilled enough in a certain field but try to use it anyway, this might actually be pleasant.

Really interesting it was only in Fallout 2, Fallout made you just grunt and thus almost always unable to communicate at all.
And then came Arcanum, which made it totally damn hilarious.

you cant really get anything out of the game by being a low IQ character.
there is only so much fun to be had with the dialogue you will hear.
unless you play half the game as a dimwit and then beef up your stats after a while to see how people act.

My starting stats are always 6 str, 5 everything else and 9 Intelligence. OR maybe lower Luck with increased agility.

Outsmarting people and robbing them blind is much more fun than blowing their head off. Well... Almost as fun, usually I do both. :shifty:

[I suspect that] the main reason its there is because in Fallout 1 & 2 drug withdrawal can lower your stats; so occasionally your PC would stumble into town and gibber away somebody, but be in too bad a shape to be understood by them, or understand what they say.

This is not the only reason (thankfully), but I'd bet it might be a large part of it.
