World PVP existed before any of the expansions, when huge hordes of players would raid back and forth between XR and Astranaar. Yes quest givers got killed, sure it disrupted the leveling of players. Thats why you joined your sides raid and pushed the enemy out of your zone and all the way back to theirs, slaughtering everything in your path. THAT was fun world PVP. Then Blizzard introduced the Dishonourable Kill system and put an end to that. Then further killed it with BGs.
edit: As for playing WoW again. I won't ever be. I had my fun, but those times are long gone. I've never been able to return for more than a couple weeks. Then with the introduction of Cataclysm, I can't even start up for nostalgia's sake, since everything is gone.

Heh, I still remember Stranglethorn Vale when Vanilla Zul'Gurub had just come out.
Woe be to anyone who tried to level there during peak hours. On a PVP server anyway. Or if you were Alliance and dumb enough to attack that wandering Horde quest giver.
