Poignant Moments (Spoilers Probable)

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:01 am

Hey all.

So [extremely minor spoiler ahead] I just recovered Ranger Morales' body and took it to the nearby NCR. While carrying him, I just so happened to have Radio New Vegas on (usually don't listen - it's just not as awesome as GNR from FO3) and the song that happened to turn up was "Johnny Guitar." It was just a coincidence, but so appropriate to the sentiment which sent me over there for Private Morales in the first place.

Anyway, I was wondering what other moments you all thought were touching or moving in this game.

I can't recall exactly where it was, but where you find an entry on an old terminal about "the bombs are dropping, they say we have 2 minutes" or something along those lines brought a lump to my throat, that and in a cave somewhere I found 2 advlt skeletons clutching guns and a child-sized skeleton nearby clutching a teddy bear and a dino toy, I nearly lost it at that point.

Talking with Ranger Morales' wife brought me to tears. Also Boone's story and his quests. It was just heartbreaking.

Absolutely I agree with both of those too. And the graveyard at Bitter Springs and the massive amount of graves at Camp Forlorn Hope. Plenty of heartbreaking moments in Fallout games, post-apocalyptia is a b*tch...

Boone's story is very well-written. There's a cathartic remark on RNV after you complete the final step of his quest:

An entire Legion raiding party has been wiped out by a pair of armed civilians at Bitter Springs. A local man says "God sent us two angels, and at least one o' them had a .308 caliber flaming sword of justice - with telescopic sights."

Not only is it funny (I love the "with telescopic sights" tag), but it casts Boone as an angel - a man who all this time has considered himself a demon. Bravo, Bethesda. Bra-effing-vo.

The trail of graves at Forlorn Hope really got me. At first I was like, "Wait, does this path even lead anywhere? There must be hidden loot down here or something." Then suddenly it struck me that the trail led nowhere at all, which seemed appropriately devastating and depressing. Very nice touch.

Also: If spoilers are probable (heck, even guaranteed, given the content of the original post, which mentioned an unmarked quest I'd never encountered), why is this in the no-spoilers forum?

I think that is black mountain.
I also see a lot of dead children skeletons, and while ity's horrific, it's quite immersive..

Agreed on both accounts, Boone especially, as his is probably the most tragic story I've experienced in a game.

When I read that entry I paused for a moment and was pretty in awe of it. Made me think if things went extremely sideways I'd probably do the same thing, leave a reminder that I was there.

That was really good with Christina, my only gripe is the NCR guys there made it sound like I was in for traps and Fiends galore. I shot all but one walking up the hill and no traps on the direct path. But the NCR guy redeemed himself with the convo bringing him back. Christina Morales a D-list maybe C-list NPC from NV and I bet I will compare future side quests to this one for ages and ages to come.

I really like the time when Lily listens to a holotape of her grandkids. At first they make you think that Lily's a crazy Nightkin like Tabitha but then it turns out that she was really a grandmother who got dipped by the Master, which makes her dilemma with the anti-psychotic medicine really sad. I wonder what happened to her grandchildren.

The traps the Legion set up near one of the NCR camps (Forlorn Hope?) with the heavily injured NCR troopers laying on top of mines. Great touches. One of the soldiers had a rather sad letter on him as well, saying how he regrets joining the army and all that.

And of course, the story of Vault 22.

Pretty much all of the letters scattered around Forlorn Hope.

I haven't found that many examples in NV, compared with F3.

Playing an evil character now, I got the quest from Caesar to "take care" of the Brotherhood of Steel. When I played the first time, I went ahead and destroyed them as I was asked to do by NCR, so I didn't do their quests.

This time, however, I decided that I wanted to use the Power Armor, so I did their quests. So.. I go through it all, knowing full well that I had to destroy them eventually to progress in the game.. joined the brotherhood. Hardin is calling me Brother.. all that jazz.

Anyway, when he gave me the Power Armor, it overencumbered me. I made the trek back to the quartermaster to sell my combat armor and the whole time Johnny Guitar was playing on the radio.

It's funny, but I just felt bad about what I was about to do, and having to walk so slowly just made the whole thing feel kind of sad.

Also, helping the Powder Gangers take over Goodsprings was kind of hard to do, because they're all so nice. Oh well. Nobody said it was easy to be evil.

I second the dead/injured soldiers placed on landmines. The first time I didn't realise until I heard the beep and it was too late, and I was shocked by the lack of respect behind it. War is brutal.

Agreeing with the Christina Morales mini quest, but from a different perspective. My first encounter with her was on a fully merc style playthrough, so when she asked for help I chose the "Sure, but how much will you pay me?" option... whoever did the voicing for that next couple lines did an incredible job of making me feel like such a bastard, I almost had to break from staying true to being a mercenary.

I agree with everyone's 'moments' and was also choked-up myself sometimes...
I was deeply disturbed while exterminating every last Deathclaw at the Gravel Pit.
Maybe it was the way I did it, but it was so pathetic - completely appalling.
The big male, then joined by the big female and all the little babies, running around in circles, waving their arms, on fire.
One by one the babies fell, it was awful! then the big male. Then the big female was 3/4 gone, and when I stopped firing she just stood there breathing heavily and glared at me.
Lord, I knew I had to finish her off...
I dunno, it sounds stupid but it really freaked me out. Emotionally draining.
Hey nobody likes Deathclaws, but this was a complete extirpation!
Little dead babies clutching at their mother's legs...
Disturbed my sleep.
(But one night only, heheh...)
Regards

Lily listening to the recording of her grandkids. And then telling me that she only took her medication half the time because it made her forget their faces. I could not tell her to take her dose as prescribed after that.

I don't think it's stupid at all. When all is said and done, this game is about humanity and if our humanity isn't affected by what we're doing and immersing ourselves in, then it doesn't say a lot for humans.

Yeah, it's like when I killed the baby brahmins my first time around. Man, I felt gutted.

The only thing I don't care about is the people (one's I kill anyway), and the mutated insects.

Most of the ending slides for Arcade Gannon :sadvaultboy:
Especially the ones where:
He is sold in slavery to Caeser as a doctor and you help the Legion win.
Or where he fights with the Remnants for the NCR and you help the NCR win.

Poor Arcade.

That had nothing to do with Bethesda and everything to do with Obsidian. Bethesda simply doesn't have the writing chops for subtle depth like that.

Anyway, beyond Boone, I had to find Arcade Gannon's quest to be particularly touching. It really gave us a look into the Enclave that we hadn't seen before, and the ending was awesome, with
Spoiler
The Enclave Remnants gathering together for one shot at redemption, before vanishing into the sunset once again.

The Red Lucy quest was also fairly emotional for me, due to the atmosphere. In most games, six is pretty meaningless, but here it felt like one last night of love before riding off to a huge battle at the dam. Admittedly, that might be because it's the last quest I did before the end of the game. :P

You mean Obsidian. They are the guys behind NV.

EDIT: Blah! ninja'd by the Corporal!

As for the topic, must say that the whole Bitter Springs/Boone saga was quite... interesting.

The resolution to the Black Mountain quest.

Spoiler
It turns out Tabitha was talking to herself this whole time, parroting her long-lost friend Rhonda. Tabitha's reaction at the newly-repaired Rhonda made me feel all warm and fuzzy - the ending slide that states they want on to have many more adventures in the Wasteland was the cherry on top.

A very satisfying quest with a very satisfying ending.

Spoiler
Wait wait you can solve the quest peacefully and have them in the epilogue slides?
But whenever I freed Raul, they both (Tabitha and Rhonda) went ape[censored] on me and I had to kill them. :(

While I don't think it justified the slaughter of Nipton, I must admit that I went "oh you... bastards!" when reading the Mayor's journal in the town hall.

Like I said, I don't think it justified the Legion's actions but it was a great little moment in that I at least understood where they were coming from.
