I'm just glad they didn't feel the need to insert Texas Hold-em. I'm so bored of that variant.
Texas Hold'em wasn't a popular variant either in the Vegas whose time period and style New Vegas is emulating, but I would like to have seen poker make the game in some fashion. I'm awful at roulette, slots (haha, as if skill has anything to do with ti), and though I'm pretty good at Blackjack, I never get anywhere near the returns I do when playing Poker. Draw Poker was played in Vegas during the 1950s, so they could have included that. Probably would have been easier to program as well.
Poker is great for tension between NPC characters, as everyone would be playing against each other. Blackjack is tame by comparison. Everyone is against the house. How fun would it have been to play poker with some NPCs, lose everything, and then trail the winner to a dark alley and mug him for the cash or pick his pockets? Or turn it around - you cleaned everyone out, and later that night are confronted by the group in a secluded location, where they demand their money back. A fight could ensue, or you could talk them down, barter with them to only give half back, convince them you weren't cheating, etc. etc.
As it stands, all you have to worry about is the house. I do hope we have the chance to try and cheat . . . "We need you to come with us, sir."
