Netflix has time-based contracts...shows are on for that period of time, then disappear. Sometimes it's a year, sometimes more, sometimes less. Their StarzPlay contract is supposed to run out before too long I think, and then it'll be even worse regarding feature length movies. Also, sometimes, for the instant streaming, certain episodes of TV shows will be missing/unavailable for streaming (vs. DVD rental), too. But that doesn't happen too often.
Anyway....I wouldn't call them gimped, exactly. But they're not very current on fictional films and are largely good for catching up on TV shows/documentaires you may have missed .... when they're available. I've seen a lot of shows that way over the past couple years.
The first two seasons of 24 were, imo, the best ones (I liked the 2nd a bit better than the 1st), then go downhill slowly from there.
Edit: I don't watch Bones myself, but I know several people who love the show.
