Hehe, never been an intellectual type. I read books and that's the extent of my intellectual activities (if I can help it).
Chess and Checkers are intellectual games
I managed to win against my brother and his test results say he's smarter than me - so, yeah... And I've managed to beat my grandad at chess and he was in the Army so

Scrabble, no that takes intellect.

And test results accurately gauge intelligence?

I'm not cut out for things like Longboarding, though that sort of thing does look fun.

Exactly B)

Though who would win in a game of chess to determine the ultimate warrior; Caesar - Genghis Khan - Sun Tzu - Alexander the Great etc etc...

I think she meant to say that it involves far too little activity or engagement on the user's part for her to call it a hobby. And I'd agree.
I wouldn't. Because then, like someone already pointed out, biking isn't a hobby. Neither is hiking or fishing.

Biking involves plenty of activity and reading is very engaging.
Engaging. To you maybe, but there are people who think reading is boring. And people who believe longboarding is fun. Isn't fun the whole point of a hobby?

Here's a definition for you:
A hobby is a regular activity or interest that is undertaken for pleasure, typically done during one's leisure time.
Regular? Check. For pleasure? Check. During leisure time? Check.
Yup, longboarding is a hobby.

Wait... what? Test? And... army? What does the Army have to do with this? :ahhh:

Ghengis Khan would win because he would just get mad and slice everyone's head off.

I envisioned the game playing out like that. With someone shouting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nrCvjg6nsI

yes, thank you.

The amount of activity you devote is totally up to you. And on this basis, biking really isn't a hobby and neither is reading. Really this way you can only call extreme sports hobbies. After all it takes no real skill to ride a bike, and virtually everyone can read.
i don't consider biking or reading a hobby though  exactly because of that

Chess is commonly used as a tactical/strategy game and that's something usually keyed with someone in the Army, and since my grandad was a Lieutenant I figured it was relevant to bring the Army/Him up since I beat him once.

I've tried skateboard and longboarding before, didn't really appeal to me.
I was never very good with trick on the skateboard and longboarding didn't seem exciting enough (fact that my town is either completely flat or piss-pants scary big hills didn't help)

Ever try snowboarding? Its to late in the year now, but its really fun. IMO its easier to do trics and control yourself, you just need to have decently strong legs (I didn't realize first time I went, sitting on a computer all day isn't all that great for your legs. Felt like my calves were going to combust)

Yet you see skateboarding as one even though the two are very similar? I fail to see the logic.

Yup I tried it. It was very fun until I took a larger jump, and fell forward with great momentum; due to the fact that my legs were attached to the board, they kind of spun like wheels and my body was the axle (all this time I was moving forward pretty fast like some demented car). Then I landed hard on my coccyx and sitting there in the snow it didn't seem so fun anymore. I went a few times after that too but I haven't been in a while (mostly because my board got pretty messed up over time and I haven't bothered with buying another one since).

snip

I'm not sure that's what defines a hobby, I'm of the opinion that longboarding is far more involved than trainspotting or bird watching, both of which are uninaminously regarded as hobbies.

Hobby: an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation.

Any activity you enjoy doing in your spare time can be considered a hobby.
