A Possible New Hobby

Post » Sat May 26, 2012 2:36 am

Hi guys, I need some advice on whether I should take up the hobby of longboarding. You see about a year ago I started skateboarding and enjoyed cruising around (as well as you can cruise on a skateboard anyway) but I never got into the tricks at all; I preferred cruising. Shortly after I heard about longboarding and I thought this would be something that would suit me. Unfortunately decent longboards tend to cost a large sum and I wouldn't want to start up the hobby only to find out I don't really like it. Are there any forumites who have tried longboarding? If so, then do you think I should give it a shot? Thanks in advance guys.

EDIT: If someone could give me a recommendation for a decent longboard (preferably within a 250$ range) I would appreciate it very much.

Hehe, never been an intellectual type. I read books and that's the extent of my intellectual activities (if I can help it).

I have seen children around my town riding them about. It makes me feel like I've travelled back in time to 1993. All they need is tracksuits and a large walkman playing whiteboy rap.

I'm not entirely too sure how to interpret the comment...are you saying it's a bit tacky? :P

Go for it. You will be judged by anol uptight people and you will piss them off but that's a bonus, in my opinion.

You know what? I will! Really I did skateboarding not to create some image, but I simply enjoy it. It's also a great way of getting around (more practical than bikes or roller blades). I'll have to look into buying a board.

Longboarding can be fun and relaxing or exciting and dangerous depending on how and where you longboard. So if your just looking for the calming aspect of it, then it's a good hobby. http://www.whiskeymilitia.com/ is a good place to find a longboard, they come up every so often on there. I think they actually have some Sector 9 boards in their private stash (have to be a member, which is free) right now for as low as $70 (originally 135). http://www.whiskeymilitia.com/wm/private_stash/309.html

And yes, it's a legit site. I've ordered a couple pair of pants, shirts and shoes and a snowboard off of there. About to order a back pack and snowboard bindings.

Thanks for the recommendation, looks like a nice site though I wonder how much shipping will cost. I originally looked into buying a Loaded (a Dervish to be specific) but it seems they're a bit too costly. I will now probably either buy a Landyacht, a Sector 9 or a Dregs. Ideally, this is the board I want right now; http://thelongboardstore.com/longboards/landyachtz/41-evo-complete-0/ but again, it's a bit costly so I may have to wait a bit before buying it.

Longboarding has been scaring me ever since I saw a video of a guy falling down a hill and his bone were sticking out of his leg. :pinch:

That was from one of these downhill race things.

Probably around 10 dollars or so. Which isn't much considering you're getting the board for 50% off.

And I really like those concave boards. I'm pretty sure I saw this one on the site before and was about to buy it. http://thelongboardstore.com/longboards/sector-9/385-sprocket-orange-complete/

If you're just going to be cruising, no deck is better than the Loaded Dervish. People like to talk [censored] about it because its main stream and over priced but i have never ridden a board better for cruising. Thankfully there are some cheaper rip offs, I know arbor makes one, the BC eel is a pretty similar design too, but neither of these have the flex and the pop that the Dervish has. Pin tails are popular designs for cruising as well, though I don't know why, the shape pretty much prevents you from doing any slides well should you decide to pick that up. As for wheels, if you aren't getting into sliding, the generic wheels that a respectable dealer will give you should be fine. Daddies Board Shop is probably the most popular online longboarding shop, and i hear their generic wheels are actually good. Longboards (the deck and the set up) are very personalized things. Send me a message if you want, and I can probably give you more guidance on getting a board you'll enjoy, if you need it.

That evo is suited more for downhill, so if thats what you're looking for, its a good board. Drop decks are also a lot slidier due to the lower center of gravity.

And if you are in fact looking to go fast, check out Sector 9's very popular Downhill Division. My friends and I all agree the concave on those boards just cannot be beat. I ride a Sector 9 Brandy. It's a top mount with a simple design, and it's way dependable for sliding and downhill. Thats just me though.

LOL that is exactly how I see longboarding. I'd stick with skateboarding; it's cooler.

Besides, do you really want to be this guy? http://www.fastarfunding.com/Portals/96000/images/spicoli.jpg

No more than any other sport that uses improbable equipment in it's execution.

It just feels like one of those things specific to a particular era, like Thatcherism, denim jackets and mullets.

do it if you like it, though i always saw skateboarding more as a hobby because you can actually do stuff with the board lol, if anyone came up to me and told me hey i've got a hobby it's longboarding then i would think well how is that a hobby you just cruise around with it.. you don't need talent or a lot of training to stay on a board
it is fun though, i spent an entire day on a longboard with a friend and we just cruised around the whole region and had fun, but yeah if i wanted an actual ""hobby"" i would have bought a skateboard instead

Then, I guess biking isn't a hobby. All you do is bike. Chess isn't a hobby then, cause all you do is play chess. Reading clearly isn't a hobby, since all you is read. What you said didn't make sense, that or it wasn't worded properly. Or I'm losign grasp of the english language.

But seriously, how is longboarding not a hobby?

Consider this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Uzlm-QwjxE
And isn't the point of a hobby to have fun?

I'm assuming you guys didn't ride that longboard harder than either of you felt safe, either. For those of you who keep saying longboarding and skateboarding like its 2 different things, its not. They are both different disciplines of the same sport.

I think she meant to say that it involves far too little activity or engagement on the user's part for her to call it a hobby. And I'd agree.

The amount of activity you devote is totally up to you. And on this basis, biking really isn't a hobby and neither is reading. Really this way you can only call extreme sports hobbies. After all it takes no real skill to ride a bike, and virtually everyone can read.

If you say so. I've never gone boarding so I wouldn't know for sure.

Biking involves plenty of activity and reading is very engaging.
