Are Open ended world RPG's dead?

That made no sense.

Don't worry, we'll have plenty of years of threads like these to explain?

Still doesn't make since. Not having a problem counting to 100 makes someone arrogant now?

No, I think Skyrim was just what was needed after Morrowind started to dumb down the series. It might not be as complex as Daggerfall, but it is a step in the right direction(and luckily it's more userfriendly).

lol at people that think numerical statistics in the form of lets say, attributes, are mutually exclusive to perks. Half of which are just themselves, numerical variables. I'll never understand the "I apparently cant count to 100" crowd.

This. I actually liked the idea of perks, but the game should have had much more skills and perks for each skill. And attributes, classes.

Thing is, people were conditioned to think stats are a thing of the past because EVERY major RPG developer takes them out, so their games are more accessible and sell more. Stats are ugly, you don't want to see a bunch of numbers in your games. They also appear to be more complex to understand, because they deal with mathematics which you don't even need to know about. All the formulas and equations are within the code of the game. All you need to do is choose a class and attributes at the beginning of the game, play and let the magic of the stats work. Heck, I bet some people would prefer Morrowind if you could hide all the numbers besides the skills, nah, just take out the whole character page, you don't even need it. More options and numbers apparently make the game feel uglier and less intuitive. The stats are just used to work as a bridge between what you do, and what gets into the game.

My biggest pet peeve is the "stats are a calculus test" Hyperbole, that gets thrown around with reckless abandon. When these people don't seem to realize that every variable is a stat, not just numbers.

For a popular genre (Ant that sells well) yes... There are very few (Modern, 2000 to now) titles to choose from.

I pesronaly think every game ever made has svcked or was a failure since playing Arena in the mid 90's. How can anything compare in open world to an actual open WORLD? It had almost everything, werewolves, wereboars, vampires, An Entire Continent! not just one part of it, but the Whole Thing! Yes Yes, ever since Arena they've had to focus on smaller portions of Tamerial and limit content because of improved graphical engines and consumer demands for more involved mechanics which requires more programmers and years of work, because they are not happy with random generated terrain, but I look back at all the things that didn't make it, Horses with Wagons, buyable ships, taking out loans from banks in small provinces and fleeing the country. Killing bandits and raiding tombs, loading up ALL their stuff in your wagon and taking it back to town to unload and barter entire stocks of goods. We have seen lots of things be lost of shelved over the years in Elder Scrolls, but they were left out in favor of things the general consumer says they require, flashy graphics, realistic physics, forensic approved blood droplets and much more impressive magical effects, all of which requires enormous amounts of time and work that takes precedence over things like massive open worlds, purchasable ships that are used as homes that can also be sailed from port to port ect. The learning curve has been lowered too, I remember when learning magic from an institution in Arena and Daggerfall was almost like bartering your soul, the mages were unhelpful, suspicious and insulting. They would teach you for large sums of gold but they were pretty sure you would just kill yourself with the knowledge. Now they are rather nice and helpful, offering tips and discounts and free use of enchanting stations ect. Whatever happened to the overly hostile city guards who treated you like a possible terrorist everytime you entered the city telling you to keep your hands to yourself and showed up with 4 or 5 backup guards to take you into custody? Atleast those rough, vocal city guards talk to you first before drawing blades and taking swings at you, in later games they would just start swinging if you were trespassing. It had horse mounted combat, it was a bit over powered since you could ride back and forth smacking guards in the face with a sword without them getting their hands on you, but saddly that was taken out in later games as well since it became much much harder to code in and took more time then they were allowed in development.

What breaks my heart is knowing that we will probably never see a game as open as Arena was ever again, they had all the time in the world and no expectations when making that game. Today its all about time limits, publishers, expectations and hype. Yes I still play Arena, on a mini laptop I drag around to occasionally pop open and play around in my virtual world, some day i'll pay off that loan I ditched out on in hammerfell... someday..

Without directly referencing a BBC show from over twenty years ago, Brit humor isn't understood in America. Less free styling and more quoting of Hyacinth Bucket, and Captain Peacock.

Oh dear I thought I would be spared the ordeal, that was just a search engine link to the term calculus, the BBC never started producing any good humour until they started saying that CO2 that plants breathe is a pollutant, but anyway here's a classic!

Americans know Monty like the backs of our SUVs, you'll have to go Fawlty Towers to win any points over here.

Yeah, Black Adder is good, although less known over here. Pretty much where we know "Mr Bean" from.

You do realise the mods will shut this down if we don't get back on topic? But it's my thread so I bet you don't care? lol

By the way Mr Bean was funny, but Rowan Atkinson's talent was definitely in Black Adder.

ANyway before we're shut down I'll leave you with another clip?

They aren't dead, they just suffered from console hardware limitations. The 256MB ram of the PS3 for example really aren't suited for great open worlds. Developer have to do some serious streaming magic to make such games work on consoles at all which is a lot of work to do. To make claustrophobic corridor level games with a loading screen around each corner is a lot less work.

You do know not the whole map is loaded at once? Skyrim could be 2 times as big and run well. They're also not forced to give us as good looking games. Just play Red Dead Redemption.
