Gametrailer's roleplaying game of the year goes to...

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 5:28 pm

RPG means Role Playing Game.

And Dark Souls has you playing the role of an undead walking his way into godhood, and choosing whether you'll sacrifice yourself and continue the age of the gods or you'll begin the age of man as the Dark Lord you were destined to be... more important choices than you'll ever find in Skyrim, ijs...

And get it in your mind ppl, RPG stands for Role Playing game, but it doesn't MEAN roleplaying game. Not any more than Adventure game means a game that has the character embark on an adventure - both genres in fact have the same exact thing - you playing the role of a character embarking on an adventure.
Get it in your thick heads already that "RPG" and "Adventure" do NOT refer to the way the story unfolds, but in the gameplay... Howe many times must it be said before you get it already? Just look at what games are regarded as RPGs by gaming sites dammit =_=

Wait so people don't think Dark Souls is an RPG and doesn't deserve GOTY?

That is plain dumb.

I would agree with that, Dark Souls has no replay value at all in comparasion to Skyrim which has thousands of different ways you can play the game.

I've actually pulled the same amount of hours out of it as I have with Skyrim.

Winner: Dark Souls

Honestly Gametrailers doesn't really know what they're talking about so I don't care. SpikeTV has more gaming credibility than them.

Personally my GOTY probably would have gone to Portal 2, ...
Oh yeah ... Portal2 makes a great RPG ...

Fail-Rage.

It doesn't deserve an RPG-GOTY.

It's like giving Skyrim a GOTY for "best racing simulation".

A decision made specifically to push people's buttons, don't fall for it. Everyone knows Skyrim is GOTY - those who say otherwise in a category like this are just looking for attention.
I agree but I suspect the reason Skyrim didn't get it is because of the PS3-version.

Based on that comment I'm going to make the assumption that you haven't played Dark Souls. Elements that modern gaming traditionally associates with 'RPG's are present in abundance in Dark Souls, primarily the statistic driven character development. It's arguably more 'RPG' than Bethesdas perks system which are effectively glorified power ups.

I accept that 'stats' aren't the only element of a typical RPG of course. As others have said however, you progress in your adventure through exploration, character management, loot hunting and by taking on the role of a 'Hollowed' adventurer who is destined to save/condemn his world.

In summary, all of that seems pretty 'RPG' to me.

Meh. It's cool to hate Skyrim, that's all. They're just trying to show how independent they are, and how they're not like every other website.

I'm just going to quote it so you and other people may read it again and realize how dumb this is.
