The idea is not, in itself, horrid. But the MMO genre is terribly unrealized, in spite of the glut of games seen in it. Tired, worn out, generic, [censored] cookie-cutter games everywhere you look, with IPs from Warhammer to Star Wars. When did the MMO genre become so limited? Occasionally you'll see a game like WWIIO or Jumpgate that offer a glimpse into what this genre could be doing. But these games are usually independently developed, underfunded, underrealized, or simply underadvertised. I am in any case convinced that the idea of an Elder Scrolls MMO, as much as I hate it, could have evolved into something legitimately unique and compelling, given the right direction.
If, for example, they completely abandoned all precidents known to the MMORPG genre and went back to the drawing board. Because some very interesting possibilities present themselves in regards to what such a game could be and mean.
But they have no interest in pushing boundaries. They want to create an alternative to games like WoW where experienced MMO players will feel "comfortable". They want a cash cow.
As if they can't afford to do something meaningful with such a title.
I fear that this project, creatively unispired and formed with all the wrong motivations as it appears to me, will severely damage the Elder Scrolls universe.
This is why I dread a TES MMOs, not that MMOs cant be great, but because they have to follow the same wow pattern in order to be sufficiently funded. But this is really only a concern for those interested in playing an MMO.
There are different concerns for different people.
1) For those who wont play the MMO anyways, because its and MMOs and its just not our cup of tea, we worry about the bastardization of the TES IP.
- For this concern, I am comforted that Todd Howard has pledged that he will keep tabs on the zenimax writers and keep them in line. Hopefully they can't add ridiculous crap to the cannon, nothing that can bleed over into the next great BETHESDA developed single player TES game. Segregate them completely, and if it must be referenced in a future TES game, do so very vaguely. (it'll have to be cause hell its an MMO where everyone is the hero)
2) For those that will play the MMO, that it will be the same tired old crap WoW poop that gets re-released every year under a different IP. Be it Warcraft, Warhammer, Star Wars, whatever. They all follow the same basic framework in order to get funding, because MMOs are veeeeeery expensive.
If not for the funding aspect, I would be comforted by Matt Firor being the chosen one leading this project.
Matt Firor is a great guy who's made great games. I STILL play daoc every once in a while, but that is only because it is really not much like the other MMOs that everyone has become used to. Playing daoc is more like playing... its not really like anything else, and its a great game. So theres a little bit of hope for those that want to play it, that its more like DAoC than WoW.
We'll see. Come on Matt, its up to you now.
