The idea is not, in itself, horrid. But the MMO genre is terribly unrealized, in spite of the glut of games seen in it. Tired, worn out, generic, [censored] cookie-cutter games everywhere you look, with IPs from Warhammer to Star Wars. When did the MMO genre become so limited? Occasionally you'll see a game like WWIIO or Jumpgate that offer a glimpse into what this genre could be doing. But these games are usually independently developed, underfunded, underrealized, or simply underadvertised. I am in any case convinced that the idea of an Elder Scrolls MMO, as much as I hate it, could have evolved into something legitimately unique and compelling, given the right direction.
If, for example, they completely abandoned all precidents known to the MMORPG genre and went back to the drawing board. Because some very interesting possibilities present themselves in regards to what such a game could be and mean.
But they have no interest in pushing boundaries. They want to create an alternative to games like WoW where experienced MMO players will feel "comfortable". They want a cash cow.
As if they can't afford to do something meaningful with such a title.
I fear that this project, creatively unispired and formed with all the wrong motivations as it appears to me, will severely damage the Elder Scrolls universe.
