Looks very... mmo-ish = ugly. I wish it looked more like Age of Conan.

My post got deleted. Fair enough. I'll leave my comment as simply "tradgic", then. Upsetting.

This is a great idea, imo. Thank you, Zenimax, for having the brains to hire Matt Firor and giving him the freedom to develop his vision.

Even if the existing Single-Player Fanbase in large part does not like the idea of this MMO, I still believe it's a good idea because if they stick to the gameplay pillars that made TES such a succesful series and venture to new shores in some other departments this has the potential to finally break the cycle of vastly boring ever repeating WoW clones.
  • Keep the control/basic gameplay concept.
  • Emphasize even more on the sandbox concept, with a dynamic world reacting to every player.
  • Offer a unique experience to each player through a sophisticated and clever system for dynamic quest (questline) and story generation.
  • Offer Housing/Town Creation as seen in that Fallout mod.
And what you get is a unique MMO, that stands out above the rest and sets new standarts in the genre.

They want to make WoW players familiar with the game ( read in gameinformer). So expect something like WoW.

Possibly one of the less constructive posts in the thread. Unless, of course, your post was sarcasm due to you avatar which I may have missed. As someone who puts The Elder Scrolls games on somewhat of a pedestal, the reason The Elder Scrolls Online concerns me is (if you have a look at what we're not allowed to post or link to) because Zenimax/Bethesda seem to be turning this in to World of Warcraft. Everything that makes The Elder Scrolls great is being forgotten about in favour of a very bland third person MMO. There are certain comments in said leak which I'd love to address but I don't think I'm at liberty to do so here, unfortnately.

EDIT:

Worse they shamelessly seem to be turning it into World of Warcraft and shamelessly claim that putting things in the game because they are 'too hard to do' would be silly. :spotted owl:

The idea is not, in itself, horrid. But the MMO genre is terribly unrealized, in spite of the glut of games seen in it. Tired, worn out, generic, [censored] cookie-cutter games everywhere you look, with IPs from Warhammer to Star Wars. When did the MMO genre become so limited? Occasionally you'll see a game like WWIIO or Jumpgate that offer a glimpse into what this genre could be doing. But these games are usually independently developed, underfunded, underrealized, or simply underadvertised. I am in any case convinced that the idea of an Elder Scrolls MMO, as much as I hate it, could have evolved into something legitimately unique and compelling, given the right direction.

If, for example, they completely abandoned all precidents known to the MMORPG genre and went back to the drawing board. Because some very interesting possibilities present themselves in regards to what such a game could be and mean.

But they have no interest in pushing boundaries. They want to create an alternative to games like WoW where experienced MMO players will feel "comfortable". They want a cash cow.
As if they can't afford to do something meaningful with such a title.

I fear that this project, creatively unispired and formed with all the wrong motivations as it appears to me, will severely damage the Elder Scrolls universe.

Noted, done, ok I chime in: Bad idea Zenimax. It really is a shame how the industry treats WoW like the holy grail of online gaming simply based on it's monetary success, which in my opinion is largely based on their marketing and not on having made an outstanding game. Or the game people want to have for that matter. I mean don't they see how logically wrong they all are: If WoW is what gamers want, why make a clone at all? I hate to be the one to tell you but: There already is a WoW. Get that already.

I agree that this is a bummer. I hate MMOs immensely, and I've given a few of them a try. Obviously a lot of people like them and I'm not knocking that. I hate the cartoony graphics. I hate the characters jumping around the screen with thought bubbles above their heads that say things like, "JK..@** WTf. DRaGens Rlz!!!" I hate the NPCs that stand there with their own thought bubbles with loads of PCs surrounding him. I hate the never-endingness. They often feel more like a chore than a game. It's just not fun to me.

I know that's probably a gross mischaracterization of MMOs, but those are the things I'm left with after a play em a bit. I also know they can be a lot of fun to a lot of people, so if that's your thing, then cool. Personally, I love a single player experience. I love being the hero of a story. I love being able to completely immerse myself in the fiction and reality of a game (if that makes any sense). I love the first person sword clashing combat. The Elder Scrolls has been dedicated to bringing just that experience. The ultimate single player RPG. I always felt that the goal of TES was to take the RPG experience of Dungeons and Dragons and deliver an experience that answered the question "What would it really feel like to be in that type of situation?" They wanted to make the fantasy experience feel real by allowing first person, limiting the HUD, striving for the best graphics available, etc. All of these things will be eliminated in an MMO. I believe that an Elder Scrolls MMO goes against everything that TES stands for (in terms of a gaming philosophy). TES was always the antithesis to the MMO experience, the exact opposite.

I understand that BGS isn't making the game, so if this game exists and has no effect whatsoever on a proper Elder Scrolls VI and beyond, then fine. It won't matter. That's my only concern. This is great news for people who like TES and MMOs, and that I respect. I just hope it doesn't mess things up for the rest of us.

P.S. I also wish I could stop giving a (self-censored) about a (more self-censoring) video game and go to sleep. I'm not usually the guy that comes and complains about these things, I'm just a little sad.

"Yay, great" another fantasy MMO. Sure this one has TES lore behind it, and some fans that don't oppose this idea, but it probably will be another generic fantasy MMO with characters like I-rulez, killer798794 and the like, and that won't credit TES one bit(IMO) . Been there, seen that. I ain't waiting with bated breath.

  • And they say people are not judgmental at all
  • And they say people don't shot things down before learning what it is
I think some of you pretty much did all of that, already.
We have not seen any gameplay videos, get real.

I think the trailer will look good, really good, no doubt about that but I like single player, I guess almost everyone would agree to me that all of them want a game where they can be the only hero, not thousand or million of heroes in Tamriel but if they want money really that bad, be my guess. I am sure they will say something like innovating to reel you in.

We're judgemental because we wanted something that actually deviated from the status quo, and wasn't simply another in a long line of fantasy MMOs. The first indication we have is that this will not do that.

I see the announcement of TES online.
What i didn't see is the announcement of TES (as we know it) being canned.
Should we all just take a deep breath here and wait for more facts, instead of painting worst case scenarios based on pure speculation ?
Probably.

My thoughts exactly.

Oh well. It's not like I haven't lost most faith in the series with the last two releases anyway.

I'm very sceptical about this MMO, the leaked magazine did nothing to peak my interest, the plot is rather dull. I'll reserve my final judgement to see what else this game will bring, frankly at present there's two ways I see this game will going, mediocre or a terrible mess, I hope I could be wrong though. Luckily this game won't prevent future TES instalments so if I decide that I don't like this game then I can just choose to ignore it; It's early days yet so I'll be keeping a close eye on this and perhaps by 2013 I'll be interested in it, I'm already playing SWTOR which many hate, but I do love the story for each class which is why I play it, not sure TESO will have anything for me.
