This is a horrible idea.

TES has never been a particularly fascinating IP. Its not bad by any means, but I don't think its what made TES games a smashing success, what makes them great.

The depth of the gameplay is what separates TES from the rest of the RPGs and makes it great. Every choice has permanent effects and you're the hero.

Not A hero, THE hero.

And theres so many things you can do with a single player game that you can't do with an MMO due to lack of persistence.

Like many have said before, multiplayer coop may make a little bit of sense, but an MMO is going to be a disaster. After you release this nobody will expect greatness from your next single player TES game.

Yup... except wait, oh I'm sorry Bethesda isn't even making this game? So I'm pretty damn sure we can still expect greatness from them.

BTW, since when have the Mods here deleted threads simply for disagree with game development choices? They might be a little protective but they aren't that draconian.

How constructive.

But, I agree and disagree. An MMO can't support the depth of gameplay we've seen from past games, but this was happening anyway. The writing was getting dull and shallow. New writers (and a new studio) may be just what we need (though this whole Tharn-Mannimarco-Molag stuff doesn't seem all that great.). The success or failure isn't going to really affect the single-player sales, people will still buy it.

Being "THE hero" isn't what makes TES great. In fact, I hate being the hero or the chosen one. I also disagree that the depth of gameplay is particularly a strong point of the series.

For me, what makes TES great is the following:

- Open world exploration
- Freedom to create the character you want
- The lore
- Mods

Will those things translate well into a MMO? Probably not.

Actually I disagree on absolutely everything.

First because I feel Elder Scrolls is one of the best fantasy setting ever seen in the industry.

Second because I don't feel the "I need to be the Uberhero" vibe on the elderscrolls games.
Probably because the main quest is usually the least thing that concerns me.
Second because I feel that not having the chance to be the great protagonist but being a character among other equal characters is exaclty what TES needs.
TES games lacks serious competition .. the kind of competition that a multiplayer environment would bring in...
Let's face it ... being the guild master of every guild and saving the world singlehanded is way too easy in single player

Much too early to determine whether this will be horrible or not but I am excited to find out. Personally I think it has a very good chance to be a really solid and enjoyable game. I will certainly give it a shot for a month.

I do think that this is a good idea. It's a great way to introduce new types of players to the vast universe of TES, without screwing with the the Bethesda made TES titles. They can perfectly exist apart from each other.

Saw the leaked screen, even looks like wow. Step in the wrong direction as far as art style is concerned, bleh

This is a great idea, imo. Thank you, Zenimax, for having the brains to hire Matt Firor and giving him the freedom to develop his vision.

I have to agree with OP on this. The appeal of TES is you're THE hero. If you don't go save the world from disaster, nobody will. In an MMO you're just some faceless dude who does some things that nobody really cares about.

Well frankly, in my case, I hope is not as disappointing as Skyrim. I can't wait for this MMO. Perhaps this is what TES really needs. No great things happen where there is doubt.

I wonder how much Bethesda is going to charge to play a game that you have already paid for? I wonder how long they keep it up until they decide to pull the plug and then you have a $60 coaster that you can't play?

Sorry, Bethesda can keep their MMO.

This has disaster written all over it.

I yawn at the announcement. Look at the epic failure that was Final Fantasy XI . Nobody played it which made it a horrible gaming experience. XII & XIII both suffered and was the beginning of the end. As a nail in the coffin they released XIV and lose more money.... So much they have to revisit XIII just to break out of the red with XIII-2! Their MMORPGs svcked them dry.

TES universe is a great new gaming experience for gamers of all ages. WoW [censored] don't "get it". The first thing after my excitement of Oblivion was, Is it an online game? **** NO! Years later comes Skyrim, WOW [censored], " is it an online game? :/ **** NO!

You see, TES is a game of losing" oneself" in a game world, story, and system to where you tell the story, not the gamers waiting to mount a raid just to endlessly camp you out for fun! Who cares about TES online? Everyone who will throw eggs at BGS because their " parent company" stole the idea.

The most scary part is the internal turmoil this is gonna cause throughout the company. Sky rim could be the last BGS ES game we see. Imagine Zenimax- Enix, lol.

End rant.

I agree, this is a horrible idea and I am afraid it will cheapen the series with a juvenille MMO. The little teenagers probably won't mind, but...ah well......I guess that is how things go. I just hope a new game company comes out and picks up where Bethesda dropped the ball.

This seems odd. They claim they are maintaining lore canon, but the alliance listing doesn't make sense from lore. Prime example: Dunmer would not ally with Argonians, at least not as equals, and Nords and Dunmer are historical enemies who have fought each other countless times due to being border nations. These elements are even stated in Skyrim (and earlier games, of course), so having these three races be one of the three alliances just doesn't make sense, at least right now. I can't see how this would be keeping lore canon.

Anyway, if it isn't free to play, most people will simply play a free to play game. Maybe it will be though.

Whats "Canon" worth these days with TES?
The Dev's just change it at a whim anyway.

I just decided to create a forum membership just to chime in on this debate. I have been a supporter of The Elder Scrolls since it came out. I have also for the past 1o+ years played MMO's. I no longer play MMO's, because it's the same content over and over again. You can surround and package it with the lore all you want, but in the end, it's all the same. And since the popularity of WoW, I have no doubt it will be filled with angry, rude kids.

I will not be playing TES MMO.

Agreed. This is not going to do well. It's WoW or SWTOR in a TES setting. No innovation, same tired mechanics. I've never felt like TES needed a mediocre MMO.

-Roleplay?
-Exploration?
-Be who you want to be?
-The engine and WoW clone issues
-The massive issue that TES has a huge single player fanbase and much of us never ever wanted to see an MMO made
-Rude people and bad community (always happens on MMO games)
-The wildly 'selling out' issue, can't say they are not because there different studios, who said 'This is a good idea?'

I really hope I wake up from this nightmare soon

?_?

Oh dear. At first I was extremely optimistic about this but after seeing those screens and the art direction this seems to be taking, this feels like another great franchise being [censored]d out. Seriously disappointing. Tradgic, even.

The graphics seem high fantasy meets batman, agree with you also. Not sure if Zenimax are trolling us or not. Either way my intelligence feels insulted.
