Sacraficing lore for gameplay?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:46 am

To me I'd rather proper lore over game mechanics. I don't mean removing core features, but for the sake of some stupid gimmick , not following lore really bugs me.

gotta agree with many here. a dragon is supposed to be this mighty awesome beast that's near indestructible. it's supposed to scare the living daylights out of everyone except the dragonborn. what are 3 lowly bandits doing even trying to fight the thing? i can understand if the dragon attacks them, but....3 bandits...they usually form groups because they are too cowardly to try to rob/pillage on their own. would 3 bandits who are too weak to do any pillaging/robbing by themselves (each one alone), so they have to form a group, be brave enough to fight a dragon or would they find someplace to run and hide?

That sounds quite disappointing... but since you have to engage the main quest to begin seeing dragons often, I will mod the dragons to be at higher levels then! PROBLEM SOLVED!!

I'll go about my play-through as usually, by doing guild quests and side quests till I feel powerful enough to engage the MQ. I'd like to feel like a BOSS before I become the "hero" of Skyrim.

Quick question: Does the lore say that a dragonborn is the only one who can kill a dragon? I know that they are the only ones who can permanently kill them by absorbing their souls.

It's a game first and foremost. It wouldn't even exist otherwise. So the priority goes there.

Yeah this. Lore is fun and can certainly add a lot of depth to the game, but if the GAME isn't fun, well then yeah.

So if both can be implemented accordingly, that's great, but if one has to be sacrificed for the other to make sense or the game to be balanced, game comes first.

If I understand everything correctly, this makes me a sad panda.

It has been observed, and I won't mention where I found this info, that three bandits can kill a dragon easily early in game.
Dragons are supposed to by ridiculously mighty in lore.
Racial differentiation is almost null with the new system.
Redguards are almost on par with Altmer in magic for example.
Every race has the same speed; Orc and Redguard alike.

Please let me know if I got something wrong. One of the things that really attracted me to TES is it's rich in game history.
I'd hate to see it undermined. :(
I'm not an expert in lore, so, please, let me know if I got something wrong.
Are there any other examples of things that are referenced in lore that might be sacrificed for gameplay?

You see the almighty awesome LEVEL SCALING !!!!!

Dumbed down, Streamlined, Easy mode always on to please and embrace the lazy, the i win button needer.

Horriblivion heavy modding to a more dificult game (OOO, FCOM Success and massive download) wasn t enought for them to catch the train.
I guess they just are giving us a platform in that aspect and so we can trough mods reshape it, althought the RPG character part is ultimately rapped...

What is left ?
Eyecandy, Action game and modders.
I hope Skyrim will be friendly toward modders.

Its exactly that, lore RPG and uniqueness has been [censored] in the name of bean counting.

I love how people go on rants when they don't even have the proper information. There is no lore breach, you will see when you play the game.

I'm fine with that. I've always hated the rampant racism in fantasy.

I hate when politically correct idiocy take over lore and game, book settings...
Races are diferent and have diferent advantages and disavantage IRL, why would it be diferrent in a fantasy game ? Especially in a fantasy game with so much pronunciated diferenciation.

"I love how people go on rants when they don't even have the proper information. There is no lore breach, you will see when you play the game. "

Weaklin dragon fallling prey to Level scaling is already a lore breach.
Undermining races habilities in some god know why reason is another lore breach.

The part that you got wrong is that anyone can kill a dragon's physical form but only a dragonborn can eliminate their existance by absorbing their soul.

Mordobb, is all you do is complain? No disrespect, but I haven't seen you say anything positive. Ever.

So far the GFX....
Combat animations...
Lore...
Exploration..
Skyrim Settings

Many things remain to be seen to be judged,

but there s already a list of weak features...and design choices:
Lvl scaling on dragons, (just to please the ADD people) couldn t have they wait so we have some more flesh ?
Mainstreaming of the game (Attribute massacre, Some skill disapearance (Some are welcome to have disapeared))
Weak perk system (Heavy armor acting like light armor) and perk concept itself. Hiccup leveling instead to try to smooth it.
Mismatch of armor weakened by perks
Lesser diferenciation on races
combat based on player and not character skills and attributes.(At least we got no VATS was unbearable)

Yeah, this is how the industry has trended, dice roll RPGs are a game of the past. Developers are going to make games for the majority...business 101. You can either more on too or live in the past and complain the rest of your life. I don't like the trend either but thats the way it is...I'll still enjoy the game immensly for what it is.

Not that any one cares but Nords are the only race that can do magic shouts or what ever you call them ( and only a select few at that). Since you can be anyrace when starting I guess any race will be able to now just so we all can have the new feature. WHo know maybe they revised it since I last read it, im sure theres some lore buff that can verifiy what im talkin about.

I'm pretty sure Nords are the only ones who can do the battle cry power. As far as shouts go they can only be done by a dragonborn, which, correct me if i am wrong can be any race. The Septims were dragonborns.

This. The game mechanics come first. Of course I would like it to be as perfect as possible according to lore but this sort of alteration isn't a big deal. It's not like the dunmer all of the sudden have purple skin

I understand everyone's concern regarding a source. But I cannot give one.

The dragon just arrived on scene when the bandits were in battle. PC did nothing. Notice I am not giving the source of my story in accordance with sticky.
We've all seen various sources of these things. I, for one has seen a lot of gameplay that suggests this TES will end up being one of toughest to date. I've seen a level 10 character get one shot killed by a giant and a myriad of other in-game enemies. I wouldn't be concerned about dragon difficulty, if they put the ridiculously powerful dragons off the leash it'd be almost impossible at the beginning.

To be fair Skyrim is still more RPG than most games that come out lately claiming to be them, especially the most open and giving freedom of choice. As game technology develops though you can represent more and more in actual gameplay elements. Things like D&D and old CRPGs used dice rolls because you just made choices rather than doing actual actions, plus old CRPGs didn't have advanced enough technology to display everything that would happen (like Morrowind 'misses' just going through things and making a woosh noise).

Bethesda seem to have a nice balance though, you control most of your character actions which makes you feel more connected with the world but the extra abilities/combat techniques and damage/success rates are still mostly down to perk/skills and your choices. It's like how they made blocking manual instead of dice rolled; it makes you feel more part of the combat and adds an extra layer of strategy but how 'good' your character is at blocking is still down to their skill and perks.

I just think they could be better designed.
And no, its ain t about dices, its about how to implement features that represent the dices cause dices are still there.

For example the main complain in Morrowind was "i can see the blade pass through my opponent and nothing happens"....tech limitation.
Today if no damage is done the oponent would just block, arrow would bounce off armor and the like.
But for example if you fail at climbing, assuming climbing would be implemented, it s still would be a dice roll to know if you suceed or not at climbing.
Same with pickpocketing and lockpicking. They inserted minigames... i find this awfull just to fit the 5 year old kid than can t stand failure, but as long they don t shaft that kind of crap on everybody and skills remain a viable way (auto try based on skill and lock dificulty) im OK.

The fact is.. developers wen t all eyecandy and no design, that is the sad part.
EX: Since the beginning i sayd perks like diablo was a poor option....and now many are finding perk bad designed and complaining, but this was so obvious...it shouldn t be any news.
Another thing that will come out with time is the lack of flexibility of skyrim system, one you roll on you ll be put slowly on rail by the radiant engine... This way ots easyer for the developpers than to have players using imagination and combining skills in some unexpected way ruining its own experience and broadcasting it.
TBH i don t know why people cares about that, its single player, if a single player gamer wan t to act like a jerk where s the problem ?

Its the same as complaining that there s spoiler in a spoiler section...

I heard of 3 bandits defeating a Giant but not a Dragon. I am skeptical of the OP.

Besides, maybe there were originally 23 bandits before the player arrived but the dragon already ate the others, hehe.

If you wan to switch character direction in the middle of development it will be hard...(Like developping a warrior then suddenly getting fed up and going stealth)
Harder than Morrowind or Horriblivion for example.
Warrior get warrior quest that are about using warrior skills
Mage mage quest that are about using mage skills
Thieves thief quest that are about using thief skills
There probably have neutral quests but those will probab?y be few due to Radiant controling the development of the game. And Radiant base the quest given to you on your 2 greatest skills.

You're misinterpreting the question.

It's really unfortunate that they've pretty much whittled down race selection to cosmetics rather than actual gameplay differences. That said, I think this will be a good game, but not a very good TES game.

Edit: I don't see why people are acting like accurate lore, etc. and Skyrim being a good game are mutually exclusive. They're not. In fact, there are 4 examples of this.

You must not have seen the racial perks that give bonuses and skills to each race.

Nor must you have played Oblivion or Morrowind which allow all races to be on equal footing in the end anyways.

Lore does not seemed to be sacrificed to me. The Thalmor trying to wipe Talos from the mythic, Alduin waking up and trying to eat the world, dragons and dragonborn, Thu'um, the Greybeards... this is all lore and we get to play in it.
