HAHA It looks like Ponies!

I think people should be careful not to dismiss the visual element of games. Just like the original King Kong film now looks ridiculous, it was considered groundbreaking at the time. I daresay critics argued at the time that it was unnecessary to advance any further, and focus instead on the story or characterization.

It's a false dichotomy to imply that because a game has good graphics, it must be lacking gameplay depth or a well written story.

Good visuals, gameplay and writing are in no way incompatible.
That goes both ways. One shouldn't disregard a game just because it doesn't have the best graphics.

I agree wholeheartedly, it's just that that particular sentiment is so commonly stated I did not feel it was worth repeating.

Yes but they look like Minecraft so don't play them.

You think that's bad...I was playing on Intellivision, Atari, and Commodore back in the 1984 days...
I did that too. Well, Atari anyway. Didn't have the others. And PacMan/Centipede in the arcades. I'm not quite old enough to have played Pong in its early heyday, tho.
Yes, graphics are all fine and dandy, but it's when you start saying a game svcks just because it looks as Minecraft does that the problem starts.
That's it right there. Judging a book by its cover, so to speak. At least play the game for a couple days before saying you think it svcks.

edit:lately my fingers always want to type "it's" regardless of whether it's what my brain wants to do

It's the inverse for me. The first time I saw Minecraft I said "Cool! It kinda looks like Daggerfall!"

I thought this too. It was a screenshot by someone running John Smith's texture pack, a picture of a cobble dungeon with a torch on the wall. It looked very similar to Daggerfall and actually got me more interested in playing it.

Also when anyone types "MW2" I always see "Morrowind 2".

What? Get with the times, man. MW2 means Mario World 2!

I don't see what's wrong with caring about the graphics in a game.
Video games have always been a nerdy thing, just like it's nerdy to care about how 'superior' a certain electronic device is to another, so I definately see the importance of graphics quality in a game as it contributes to the nerdyness of playing video games.
Hrm...in my experience some of the "nerdiest" games have some of the least flashy graphics. Kinda like how some of the most thought-provoking films have the least amount of special effects. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions to this...the point being that there are a lot of terrible films that use effects to make them watchable, while (IMO) a well-crafted film doesn't need 'splosions to be engrossing.

The biggest problem I see with such a large graphical focus by gamers is dev budgets. Awesome eye candy is expensive to produce. I like teh awesum grafx as much as the next guy as long as it's not at the expense of good gameplay, writing, etc. There are so many very, very pretty games out there that are so very, very "meh" after a few hours that I can't help but think the devs' priorities were a little off.

We didn't play/buy many of them, sadly, so many of them I'm not familiar with. :)

I kind of hate my generation of gamers.

I was playing Diablo 2:LoD in the school library a few weeks ago. Some sophomore came up to me and said this;

"Why don't you play Skryim. The graphics are a lot better and it doesn't looks so [censored]. You should listen to me, I'm a master at RPGs"

Stupidity makes murder justifiable right?

*gets Atari Pacman game* ... "Yes! I loved this in the arcade! Can't wait!"
*starts playing* ... "What is this, I don't even...these graphics svck. My grandma could make better graphics connecting a toaster to her TV."

...and yet it was still pretty addictive fun, so I gave it a pass.

This annoys me the most.

People that think if it has bad graphics that its not worth playing....I remember when Oblivion was release everyone was 'Wow, it looks amazing.....the first step outside the tutorial dungeon took my breath way' ...... but then, those same people say are saying, wow Oblivino looked so crap, I'm glad they fixed the graphics in Skyrim.

I also hate the people that act "Im an awesome RPG player" just because they have played Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption.....gah! they know nothing on RPG games.
