I am American and I have a great ear for accents. But it's different here. Nobody listens to other languages or accents unless it's a personal interest. In Europe you experience a lot more people speaking different languages, and you have a lot of American and British movies and television compared to the US' general population. In America you hear Spanish or English, with some degree of Asian dialect depending on where you live. Anything else is exotic. Most people couldn't tell you the difference between a Yorkshire British accent and a Cockney accent here, let alone different European languages.


People need to realize Skyrim is more than Norway, it's an amalgam of northern Europe, and it's even got Scottish sounding tribes. There are many tribes of Nords, and that's why you hear Swedish sounding accents where all the "Th" sounds are pronounced with "d" and you hear Austrian and several others. It's supposed to sound Germanic and Scandinavian with variety, not uniform.

I am from Sweden, I speak some danish, some norwegian, some german, and I've heard a lot of german people from many parts of Germany speak english. In Skyrim, there are not a single accent which sounds scandinavian, and very few that sounds german. And the Arnold accent that people are speaking of, sounds extremely much like Arnold, which is a specific Austrian accent. Most germans doesn't sound even close to that. You claim that it's supposed to sound like a little scandinavian here, a little german there, but it doesn't. It mainly sounds Austrian, and not even German, and it's rare that it even sounds german, let alone scandinavian.

This is not the only part where Bethesda have shown their common American ignorance of Europe's composition. For example, they seem to think that fur is just for the good lucks, and not for protection against the ballfreezing cold that exists in arctic climates. The only outfits (including clothes) that I've seen in Skyrim, that seem viable to wear in snowy climate, is orcish armor, dark brotherhood suit (though that one even might be a bit too chilly) and the daedric armor (or well that depends on how well insulated it is and how much cloth is inside, but at least it seems somewhat airtight).

They do sound like Arnold and they certainly don't sound Scandinavian. A Swedish accent sounds beautiful with English, the Danish/Norwegian accent is perhaps to understated and not evocative enough for a video game.

I'm from Scandinavia (Sweden) and not one of the accents in Skyrim sounds scandinavian. They just sound weird, although I like some of the womens accents. And yes the guards do sound like Arnold.

I think it's more the case of what Americans think it sounds like, although I impressed that Bethesda didn't just go for german accent which is the case in 99.9% of American productions. Which is especially annoying since it's very different from Swedish/Norwegian etc. accents.

Germans tend to do the "d" instead of "th" as well as the Swedes, Danes and Norwegians - sorry, but I have yet to hear a Nord that sounds anything like a Dane or Swede with a heavy accent would. It's no problem - they can go with whatever accent they want as far as I'm concerned, since this isn't supposed to be the real scandinavia anyway. The architecture is completely faux-viking though - don't see a lot of germanic stuff there.

I havnt heard one that sounded Scottish yet,but I have heard a bunch of other accents.English,American(maybe Canadian),and the wonderful variety of Scandinavian and Germanic accents.

I've only heard one Scot, in Riften I think, and I was like "Where the hell did you come from?". Anyways, people have issues recognizing their own accents, and a lot of the voice actors in Skyrim are Americans imitating various accents. If you could hear me out loud you'd hear the difference between a German using D instead of TH and a stereotypical Swede, it's miles apart, and both are in Skyrim.

Hmm, I've yet to hear one that sounds Scandinavian at all. They sound germanic to me (I'm Danish). I'd say they've gone for a variety of German sounding accents with little or no true scandinavian input.

Villy doesn't speak with a Danish accent as much as he just speaks really poor English.
I don't see many characters with a Scandinavian accent in the game though, I agree with that.

One of the reasons his English is poor is the heavy accent imo Actually, I think his tonal register is closer to English than many Danes I hear - most sound somewhat more dour when speaking in English, never reaching the high notes that English people do.
