Dark Souls Discussion Thread #12

Serious?! Awesome, and I have another question are these,Hmmm how should I say, Gywn, the witch, The pgmy, The scary skeleton guy, and seath, are they gods?
You'll find out almost everything when you play, but as Xetirox said, the story is very vague and doesn't reveal everything.

Who didnt get killed the first time they fought the asylum demon?

Gwyn, the Witch of Izalith, and Nito are, you could say, this universe's equivalents to gods. Seath...no, he's a dragon who was born with deformities you could say, though it's unknown how much power he had in comparison to them, particularly since the source of his is different from theirs. As for the pygmy...well, let's just say he/she/it/whatever is by far the most mysterious element in the, plot, but possibly also the most important.

A lot of things about the world of Dark Souls are deliberately left vague...which is partially what makes it so fascinating.

Hearkens back to the good old days when graphics werent realistic and voice acting was non existent. One had to use their imagination, especially in RPGs which is what made them so much fun.

I look forward to the PC release of this game. I haven't been able to try this yet, due to not owning a console. I've heard of it, and would like to try this so called "challenging" game.
It's supposed to be rediculously hard, right? I can't wait.

I came close to not dying the first time I fought it, but then again I had Monster Hunter veteran skills. Combat isn't quite so fluid in Dark Souls, so I had trouble adapting my usual dodging rolling all over play style with the find the bosses pattern and just repeat until dead. It's more linear than Monster Hunter in that regard. With bosses in that game you always have to keep mobile or suffer the consequences.

Edit
Fighting the gaping dragon was hilariously stupid for example. The beginning boss in Monster Hunter hits almost as hard comparatively and is far smaller and more mobile. They only get harder from there. Not to mention in Monster Hunter they have a crap ton of different attacks. Dozens of boss monsters ect. So you really need to be good at picking up patterns and dodging. http://fast1.onesite.com/capcom-unity.com/user/soahc/b60469e07665cc500f8550bbb9612e9b.jpg?v=67500 is the boss I refer to, kill that and you might make it somewhere as a hunter. The dreaded Kut-Ku; or as we affectionately nicknamed him, the chicken dragon.

... I sense dark things in your future. But will you overcome? I dunno. I hardly know you. But I hope you do.

I sense dark things as well, but I wish you the best. The Capra Demon is at least, literally, 10 times harder than the asylum demon.

Haven't been playing for a while because of work and what not, but gonna play good and long later on tonight. I have the majority of Blighttown done, i got the fire soul near the blowdarters and firedogs about two weeks ago. Went exploring and found a new spell, and a new red robe and some other goodies. I want to see a blacksmith badly but that means big backtracking and I dunno if I want to do that. I might have to. I can go to Queloggs' Domain (not sure of the spelling) or Valley of the Drakes, so I'm gonna go into the bugs nest first. Agh...I should really backtrack though. There is an area of the Depths I know I haven't hit yet so I wanna go there too and kill some high levels I passed before...but backtracking through Blighttown seems like its gonna be damn hard

You don't need to backtrack! You'll feel like an idiot if you do.

Spoiler
The Valley of Drakes leads to New Londo, which in turn leads to Firelink.

For future reference, I highly recommend purchasing a Weapon, Armor, and Repair Box in the future.

It's extremely easy... Anyone who finds it hard simply doesn't know what he's doing. :P

It's like playing http://www.malovic.in.rs/images/mfbigcap.gif without knowing what the numbers are for.

Thanks for the tip on the shortcut, actually just read it but did it about an hour and a half ago. Didn't know that one staircase was there in Firelink. Beat Quelagg my 5th time...I know somewhere I made the Witch of Izalith mad. Rung the second bell and ducked into the fire area Demon's something...forget the name. Got obliterated by a boss there, need to level up more. Backtracked and killed that one pesky tower knight, then went blacksmithing and upgraded. Got some good new robes which are high level. Going to go around looking for a cure for a nasty case of the head cold, lol, an then dive back into the Depths. Gonna grab me a purging stone, too.

I love this game.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/06/21/dark-souls-pc-system-requirements-mic-needed-for-mp-render-eternal-damnation-on-1gb-ram/ is very reassuring. We aren't doing any optimizations and it's going to be a "straight port". Then don't ever let us see what the hell your actual good port looks like since this looks fine. It would create some sort of paradox or new level of design others would have to hit or something.

It's speculated that the player character is the pygmy.

I thought that the furtive pygmy was the progenitor to the player character, not the player character him/herself.

That is also possible.

Don't blame the game, blame the player. Nobody said learning the mechanics of the game were easy, but after you master the basics it actually can be rather easy. By the time I got to the end boss, for example, I was able to defeat him on my first try.

As for the pygmy...
It's theorized that when Gwyn, the Witch of Izalath, and Nito took the lord's souls they were able to defeat the creators of the world (arch-dragons) and begin a new age.
Thus began the age of fire. Nothing lasts forever, though, and the age of humanity drew near. This would be known as the age of Darkness.
It is the fate of the pygmy, who took the special "anti-lord soul" and vanished from the pages of history, to usher in the new age of darkness. (Hence the name of the game is Dark Souls)
That's assuming you don't link the fire, of course.

There's a dialogue with Kaathe that explains a lot of it, I think.

Steam also says "multiplayer requires microphone headset support," but that isn't true, Namco Bandai tells http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-21-dark-souls-pc-system-requirements-reveal-multiplayer-microphone-support. Prepare to Die Edition will not support in-game chat at all, it turns out.

Wat.

Ingame chat in Dark Souls would be horrible anyway and would go completely against the aesthetic of the game.

I posted a link way earlier with the same news, and it was a mistake with the mic listing.

I personally believe this, I don't know why it just makes sense to me. Who better to kill all the other lords then the mysterious one himself.

Something I'm so glad From Software did with the lore and story is keep it vague and mysterious...it completely adds to the aura of Dark Souls. The Lords are very Sauron-esk in their mystique, and its perfect. So much is left for anolysis and individual perception, and I couldnt see it any other way. One thing that adds to it is the pure difficulty...or not that...just legitimate challenge. When an antagonist of any sort is shown or discussed, they're respected, in my case. Usually in a game you tell yourself 'I'm going to kick that dudes butt', but in Dark Souls, you respect. Even in the opening sequence, when i saw the the Witch of Izalith, I took her very seriously with respect. Same with Gwyn and Nito. I'm like..."wow...main antagonists...holy crap if i fought you right now id die within one tenth of a second, completely and absolutely.

When I bought this game, I heard good things and obviously heard rumor of its difficulty. It's hard, but not unbeatable, and I've learned a lot about myself in my run sofar. I've died a lot, and gotten frustrated, but up until now the frustration is fair and I don't feel cheated, and its a sweet, tasty frustration. I've experienced some of my greatest thrills in gaming with this game, and its very, very well balanced, fair and kind in the frustration / rewards it gives. Along with not holding your hand (here's a lot of Souls to level up with for defeating this boss...go ahead and die twice and lose them forever if you want, but here they are) and just respect for gamer intelligence, and everything else, including hard cold robust statistics with superb action and sweet loot, and it borders on masterpiece. Truly imo. And the atmosphere!! It also blends authentic survival horror and horror in general.

I bought this game used for $20, and if From Software makes another, im buying brand new release day for $60
