I think this idea is the better of them for continuing in this universe. This way they don't have to kowtow to Lucas, try to wrap up the loose ends of the Skywalker family. but instead can make up a whole new set of stories with new characters.

Much later in this era, as suggested by the title, is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Legacy comic series. Set one-hundred thirty years after the films, these comics follow the story of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cade_Skywalker, a descendant of Luke Skywalker who has to confront a resurrected Galactic Empire under the control of a new Sith Order.

Would also be a way of having cameos of the original actors via visions.

Much of the EU that I've looked into hasn't really done anything for me, but it would be a better idea than trying to follow the OT too closely. As long as it looks and feels like Star Wars, I suppose.
