Why is Bethesda so secrative?

I did some research and as long as TES make a DLC, Xbox gets its exclusivity for the month which means that DB will be Xbox first then PC/PS3 a month later

This is normal for them.

Think back. Remember our first hint of Dawnguard?
It was literally a picture. A picture of Dovahkiin with glowing eyes and the title "Dawnguard."
That was it.

They advertised it as an "exciting announcement" and then posted it to Bethblog while everyone sat around making fun of how stupid it was. We'd known for MONTHS that the DLC would be called Dawnguard, but the picture announcement literally revealed nothing. All it did was basically confirm the DLC's name.

Fast-forward to now, we have a trailer that, again, tells us basically nothing. It basically says we'll be fighting Bizarro-Dovahkiin on Solstheim and that's it. It reveals very little about new features, the storyline, new additions etc.
So yeah, that's just how they are, god only knows why. Perhaps they believe that by withholding information on Dragonborn, they'll raise the demand for information, thus profiting them more. Either way, I wouldn't expect info until a good 2 weeks before the DLC's release, AKA ~next week wednesday.

Yeah, it's part of the hype campaign and given the mad speculation, you have to admit that it works.

That's a good thing. Information released before the game, is information lost from the game when you play it.

I'm very happy with Bethesda's lack of information on what is in DB. I've seen the trailer and I want to find out what everything is when I get it not before.

Why is Bethesda so secretive?
Because we have to ask him.
Because Gstaff is the informant we deserve, but not the one we need right now.
So we will ask him for more info, because he can take it.
Because he is not a hero, he is a silent informant, a watchful forum administrator.

On Twitter? Where have you been the past two years?

I've been out having a life instead of telling everyone I'm eating toast, then taking a deuce, then taking a nap, then getting my nails done. Suppose it's good for those who can't go out though.

Also, why the @#&# does it have a thing asking if you wanna look up toast on my post? And now it doesn't...

Max, it's been a week since announcement and all we really know for sure is that it's coming out the 4th. This could all be a bad Bethesda joke, and they could just be showing us stuff from the gamejam vid that they didn't release before.

Dunno if that makes them a scumbag or a super troll though...

Bethesda is secretive because they have secrets. I think thats why, but maybe a different reason.

You may want to revise that. I asked him and he's unable to share any information with us right now (presumably he's as much in the dark as the rest of us).

Well, he actually give us hope by telling us in another post that we might see something this week.

In the Skyrim marketing campaign they basically did NOTHING until it was 1 month left to the release. We didn't know how the cities were until then! We were learning stuff until the very final trailer.

Bethesda know that their game is loved and we will buy it. And they know too that they have to treat us like little kids. They have the duty to hide information about the game for our own sake because Skyrim gameplay is based in discover everything instead of showing it all in the trailer or interviews.

Look Dawnguard, they sell it as a vampire DLC and it's full of surprises I never though I would see in there.

The curse/bless is that they take that principle to the EXTREEEEEME this time. They show us a trailer that confirms nothing! We still are not sure if we will use spears, or mount dragons or nothing. And look at the forums!

They are just making us bleed and saving money in our wallets to buy something we dont know ANYTHING about! And that ladies and gentlemen... that's genius. I bet that a Gstaff's ancestor was the guy who started to sell bibles 2000 years ago.

Amazing :). Let me make a costume change.

hahahaha Now I can't stop imagine Todd Howatd talking to Gstaff:

Todd- You don't owe this people anymore, you've given them everything.
Gstaff- Not everything...not yet...

The Bethesda knight rises!

PD: Jesus, posting in here is relaxing.

The reasons (most of them already mentioned):
  • Legal contracts obligating non-disclosure. Go ahead and try to release a AAA game without one. See how that goes.
  • Hype. The best way to market a video-game is to build up hype. And the best way to build up hype is to tease people with small bits of information and let them speculate the rest.
  • Have you ever worked in software development? Solidifying a release date early is about as difficult as making a coin land on its edge.
  • Don't you think they have better things to do than dealing with all the BS that will be thrown at them if they talk about works-in-progress that aren't even guaranteed to be there in the final thing? Like, actually making it?
