Braggen's chickens at Lakeview Manor were not smart enough last night to flee at lightspeed. An ancient dragon landed right in front of them and made roast chicken.
Strangely enough I lost Braggen's steward Vilkas as well, never lost a person before in any of the attacks. Neither the dragon nor the dawnguard crowd attacked Vilkas who started out up on the armory balcony and died near the house construction workbench, so it is a bit of a mystery what killed him. I was a bit slack and he had run out of health potions, and a bit careless giving Erandur the staff of chain lightning to play with, he had Rayya down on her knees with it. But I am not sure that would have had much effect on Vilkas who was over near the workbench.
A group skeevers were attacking a stray dog down on the road, a dragon started out attacking something just past Pinewatch, Braggen and Erandur and a conjured Dremora Lord were on the other side of the coach attacking the dawnguard down near the pond, Rayya started with the dawnguard then changed to chasing the dragon that was doing a wide circle around the area. And Shadowmere was halfway down the hill past the animal enclosure, so ended up protecting the cow from the dragon when it landed. Braggen went for the dragon as soon as it went toward the house, the dragon was attacking the cow and chickens, not Vilkas. Braggen's other horse never moved from the stable, which was smart considering the dragon was facing the other way. The dragon was not there long enough for the horse to attack it, just long enough to roast a couple of chickens.
I am thinking either the staff Erandir was using somehow killed Vilkas, or there was another group of enemies I never even saw. It was night, and that coach driver was a mistake, he blocks the view. I could not see Vilkas.
I was actually down there looking for Lydia my missing steward from Heljarchen Hall, my last save is way back at Windstad Manor, so Vilkas is stiil safe, and I will be giving him and Rayya a ton of health potions first thing when I see them. Neither of them had any health potions left, they have survived a lot of attacks. The dawnguard will be getting more than enough time to sneak up on us. And Erandur will be losing that staff before we even arrive, it worked great on enemies but too dangerious to house staff. Will have to find him something a bit safer.
On the two previous attacks with Erandur as a follower, it was only Braggen, Erandur and Shadowmere defending. Rayya and Vilkas never got involved, and the cow and chickens escaped down the hill away from the fighting. Both previous attacks started the same way with the dawnguard attacking from the pond direction and the usual dragon flying around. Braggen and Shadowmere had no problems with the damage taken from the staff, so it never occured to me it might be dangerious to other defenders. The staff of chain lightning is permanently banished to being a dust catcher.
