Pure Mage vs Pure Warrior as starter?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 1:47 am

I'm really tempted to make my first character a Pure Mage, but there's a part of me that thinks otherwise and I'd love ya'll to help me decide, maybe get into a little bit of a discussion / debate on the matter and see what happens.

So when I first played Oblivion, my first character was a Pure Warrior. Whilst I was playing this character, the foreign spells and cool summoned creatures really amazed me and inspired me to make my second character a Pure Mage. And yes by the way, I am soul-bent on creating a Pure Mage or Pure Warrior, nothing else, no mixtures, etc. Do you think that starting out as a Pure Mage in Skyrim and then once you grow bored with the game and create a new character ( Pure Warrior ), will lead you to feeling disappointed, because it's just using a weapon(s) to hack and slash the enemies to death?

Thoughts?

Why don't you decide it in the first hour? It's not like you will choose a class anyway.
I think I'll do this. I'm thinking about a thief archer or pure mage.

Playing as a pure warrior will probably be more challenging, as it means no Shouts.

Mage gets my vote. Warriors are great and fun to play, in their own right. I just have a lot more fun playing mages.

In all TES games, I start as a warrior to get a feel for the game maybe using a little magic if I can. After 5 or 6 hours I consider what I've learned and the restart with a final character (although for me, no character is really final because I always replay many times :) ). Warrior because it's straightforward; there are always tricks to magic.

I'll be doing a pure warrior/ranger for sure, no magic for me. I've never really learned how to do magic and although I'm sure I'd probably love it, I have a great time playing as a non-magic player.

It's not a "vs". The OP is asking for help in a choice. Your thread was locked because it was a "vs" thread and due to people acting like children and starting to fight, in lieu of civil conversation.

Playing as a pure warrior will probably be more challenging, as it means no Shouts.
Shouts aren't magic which use magicka. They have a separate cool down timer.

Dragon shouts are designed to suit all 3 archetypes.

Confirmed by the developers.

I can't decide this either. I don't know what I want to use, all three archetypes sound improved and great. The only choices I've made on my character are that he is male and either an Argonian, Dunmer, Breton, or Altmer. That's all.

I guess I'll just play and see what happens.

i don't know man what do you feel like playing, pew pew or smash smash. if its like oblivion pure mage will be difficult especially at lower lvls.

ive decided on being a bosmer rogue, i plan on doing the thieves guild and/or perhaps the dark brotherhood for my first play through. ill be taking light armor/one handed blades/dual wielding/archery/alchemy(only poisons) and perhaps dabble in enchanting but for that i think ill need mysticism or steal soul gems from the mages guild

Based on the previews it seemed like Destruction was very powerful, even if you do burn through Magicka pretty fast at lower levels. Being a mage just looks so satisfying!

I am planning on a Nord Ranger with Archery/Two-Handed/Restoration to get a feel for the new combat system, then moving onto a Mage/Thief hybrid.

I don't care what the developers say - shouts are magic as far as i'm concerned. Magic repackaged. If you call in a thunderstorm or freeze someone, that's magic.

In fact, by definition, Dragon shouts are really just spells:

Noun: 1. a word, phrase, or form of words supposed to have magic power; charm; incantation:

and in real life, magic doesn't exist at all, invalidating your argument.

At some stage, you have to accept the line between reality and the video game.

You should probably start with a pure warrior. They're harder to mess up than mages.

If you really want to play this character all the way to the end without a huge struggle, warrior is the way to go. However, if you enjoy a bit of a challenge and a lot of experimenting, then mage is the way to go. With a pure warrior, it's difficult to screw up swinging a weapon into monster's faces (although it has been known to happen). With magic, you have to play around a little and figure out what works for you. If you're easy to please, play a warrior. Personally, I never get tired of hacking my enemies to pieces. If you want to use something a little less direct (conjuration, illusion, alteration)and a little more challenging, roll a mage.

Go mage all the way. Mages are full of mage-y goodness unlike warriors.
