Racial heights and first person 'dwarfism'

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 12:13 am

FOV is meant to keep your brain from rioting and giving you motion sickness due to presenting more info in your field of view than your brain usually expects.

Skyrim's in the 60s because it's aimed at players playing on the Xbox looking at a large HDTV from around 10 feet away. Draw a mental cone from someone's eyes to a 50 inch hdtv 10 feet away and it's about 60 degrees of vision.

If you sit 3 feet away from your screen then a FOV of 90 or more makes sense, since the screen is taking up more of your view, so the imaginary cone from your eyes is wider.

Report back! I'm curious too, if the SetScale command works!

Yeah it works great. I set the scale to 1.05 (default is 1) and its much better. Not perfect but better.

Just bring up the console and type player.setscale 1.05 if you want to test it.

I just tested the setscale command on NPC's and the changes stay across saves, so you can use it to make companions or to you important NPC's taller or shorter. It's cumbersome to do it like this, but I can't think of any other solution until the CK is released.

If only you could move the first person camera node to the third person animation. I hate running around with my arms at 90 degree angles in front of me, blocking 50% of the screen and giving me headaches.

This could also have the (positive) side-effect of not holding 80cm long battleaxes right below the axehead in first person...

Those arms you see are not the third person animation. They're a special animation designed for 1st person, and are not height based. But once again, am I the only person who's camera seems to be even with or above my head? Seriously, I look at an NPC who's face seems to be at head height, zoom out, and I'm shorter than them.

Bretons and Imperials seem close to correct to me. Altmers and Nords have the first person pov too low. Try an Altmer. It's obvious.

Has anyone found a way to fix this? The previously posted console commands don't fix this.

By the way, the first person camera changes height according to the scale...

I'm not sure if that's actually the case. "Krok", my acromegalic argonian, has a serious medical case of "player.setscale 1.3". My 1POV when playing him is MUCH lower than his head height. Maybe its just more annoying because the difference is greater (1.3 times as great), but given that I still can't even see onto the top shelf of most book cases when playing him, I strongly suspect the view is exactly the same as for any other character.

No, it doesn't. The camera is fixed both in 3rd & 1st person view. I use player.setscale commands to give myself "super speed" occassionally.(seriously, try player.setscale 50, crouch & uncrouch, and you run 200 mph).

The camera actually is level with most NPCs heads if youre looking strait, most people play with the camera tilted slightly down though so it makes it look like NPCs are taller than they are. Plus there arnt that many areas where the ground is completely level, even cities, especially Whiterun with its gradual slope.

Edit: I still want a FFP mod.

I see. So the problem is really that the camera is the same for every race, though the actual height is not, thus making tall players have their cameras below head height and short ones have it above. This makes sense, as I am playing a female Breton and found the camera slightly above my head.

You do realize that you are shattering a lovely stereotype of boys all across America? :).

It's alright, they are still beautiful, at least many of the ones I saw when I was there were. Yeah, generally speaking though they do tend to be taller than southern Europeans, even if they aren't usually 6 foot tall. ;)

The 1st person height thing is a little irritating, both combat-wise and the fact that as a decently tall Nord I still seem to be looking up to people, which isn't natural for me. However, I find it easy enough to forget about when I am doing other things in the game. I would download a mod to adjust this if it were made though.

I avoid 1st person whenever I can (damn those stupid forced 1st person sequences) but I noticed it too especially when I was playing my previous character an Altmer. In 3rd person the crosshair was exactly at her eyes level but when I went into 1st person it looked like she had a camera stuffed in her cleavage.

Which was pretty funny ^^ but I still think it should be fixed.

One thing to note about the setscale command, there are two scale factors attached to every actor, and they get multiplied together to get the final scale. When you use setscale in the console, it sets both of these values at once - so if you're going for a specific height, and do the math to get the scale factor, you need to use the square root of that with setscale.

I'm quite sure the first person camera changes with scale. I tried setscaling myself to 0.75 / 0.80, which is aprox a Skyrim child height, and grabbing things from the tables became difficult because of the view height, which was then lower as the table itself. Maybe it doesn't change exactly equal to the new scale, but it sure does change. I'm not sure in Skyrim, but in Fallout, changing the scale would even change your overall speed accordingly...

Do "player.setscale 5" or 50 or even 90.. The height in first person does not change. You do end up with ungodly speed though lol

Yeah, I actually started playing a Breton female for a while because of this. But, I really wanted to get back to playing an Altmer. Now, because of SaidenStorm's advice here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1302149-req-camera-at-headhight/page__gopid__19725690#entry19725690, I am!

Check it out.

Strange, first person camera changes on my game fine with setscale if I go below 1, but over it it defaults to normal. No change in third person. Try setscale to 0.3 and your view in first person goes down almost to the floor.
