Radiant AI improvements?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 2:42 pm

Not sure if this counts, I killed some necromancer for a quest involving his books, later I get attacked by hired goons outside of DB hq and they had a note saying he hired them to kill me...

Then again maybe he hired them if I was noticed stealing something, you know, in between the 10mins from the theft and me murdering him....

so they're returning some things and ignoring others? It would be great if stuff like personality, disposition towards the player and alignment of the NPCs affected that. so a little girl wouldn't care about armor being dropped, while a soldier wouldn't care about cabbage.

Btw, do NPCs get mad about being bumped? Some guards attacked me after (i think) I bumped into them. I think it counted as an assault. Had to kill them (no witnesses, no bounty) ebcause I didnt know how to yield.

You yield by putting your weapon away. ( I tried the blocking and activating them as in Oblivion, I died)

What i thought. Didn't work though as they just kept attacking. :(

With no NPCs reacting to my dropped stuff and yielding, I'm begging to suspect a bug in my game.

Not sure what you mean. My Nord was in his hotel room with the door closed when this occured, but from what others are describing, they've just dropped stuff out in the open and NPCs respond to this.

I meant for the other cases where it didn't happen. If you drop food after having turned their economy upside down, they'll jump on and maybe even fight over bread crums instead of staying indifferent.

I have seen plenty of people react to and interact with objects in the environment.

I was attacking a bandit fortress / mine, and after clearing the exterior I decided to try my new "Zombie Staff" and resurrect one of the dead Orc Bandits to help me fight what was ever inside. Once inside we were attacked right away, the Orc I had resurrected promtly ran over to the nearest table and picked-up a pick-axe to use as a weapon.

Huh? It was an advlt MALE who wanted my Nord's armor. Not some little girl.

Also, Personality, racial factors, and disposition do come into play to some extent, as some NPCs will like your character more than others. christ, Oblivion all of this stuff, and it only has been more improved in Skyrim.

Yes, they dont like being crowded up on and bumped into. Some of them seem to mind more than others, actually.

I read the Game Informer awhile back and it included a description where "if you drop a sword on the ground, someone may pick it up and run after you to return it. Sometimes two people may fight over the sword or it just may lay in the mud, collecting rust." I haven't had anything returned to me yet, nor have I seen people fight over it but I believe that it depends on who is present and where I drop things.

I know after I killed this guys brother for the Dark Brotherhood, he stopped being polite to me and called me a wretch. :lmao: He was such a nice Wood Elf too.

I also know when running from a dragon, do not pick the lock and hide inside while the owners are there... They proceed to warn you and then begin attack. So I'm running from them AND a huge dragon. Fun times...

The guards are also reasonable and have more varied dialogue. Much better then the guards in Daggerfall that demanded you "HALT".

I love the AI. Such a huge step up from Oblivion.

The AI is simply amazing, in Oblivion theres only so many times i can tolerate random NPC's saying "Well Met" before i started punching them.

The first NPC i hear saying "well met" in Skyrim is going to be murdered.

I'm planning to work on a RAI or NPC city life/non-combat behavior mod. In the meantime, I seem to remember having read of supposed improvements to RAI, like NPCs returning items you've dropped. Well I promptly tried that and my dagger, necklace, and piece of bread is still there right now.

I'm wondering if any of you have noticed any RAI improvements (not talking about just NPC schedules or animations) or, for that matter, hype that simply isn't there.
From the very first preview, NPCs possibly returning things to you was promoted as an aspect of Radiant Story, never (as far as I saw) as an aspect of Radiant AI. Even with Radiant Story, dropped items may be ignored.

Oh i wasnt referring to your case specifically. Just meant that it might be a factor why some npc's would react by returning some things while others wouldnt.

a big improvement I have noticed was when I was fighting in the woods, and I am an archer. The enemy began hiding behind a tree so I kept having to run around. I also find it interesting how they give up when you basically slaughter them and you can finish them. Was also interesting when I was in one of the guilds I joined and I used a dragon shout and one of them asked if I was a dragonborn... small things like that

My experience from Radiant AI was pretty amazing. I was walking out of Markarth and I saw a mysterious figure who looked like he was watching me. I started to walk towards him and he pulled out a sword and a dagger then attacked me. I killed him easily but I found a note he was carrying and it said, "Eliminate Alrik. Our client has already paid full so there is no room for failure."
pretty cool huh?

I'm pretty darn impressed with AI so far. The character interactions seem totally natural, and any scripted events don't seem scripted at all. People who overhear your conversations will comment on what you were talking about. NPCs don't stop their whole day to watch you walk down the lane.

Overall, fantastic improvements. Oh, and the voice acting is superb.

In Whiterun after I got my first shout I was running around town just shouting at the sky and after a while a guard came up and asked me to "Please stop with the....shouting. It's making people nervous" gave me two nice reply options as well, another time I was casting magic outside the smith and several guards would come by and tell me to "practice your fancy magic else where"

The NPC interactions in this game are simply breath-taking.

I finished crafting myself a full set of Dwemer Armor, and then went into the Jarl's keep. The first guard I come across compliments my armor and then asys me "That's dwarven-make, right?" Absolutely bad-ass.

It's subtle

I don't think you'll ever hear a PC say in a whisper "I bet the player doesn't know I'm smarter then the schmucks in Oblivion yet" to the barkeep

Ma'iq does, actually. ;)

How about creature AI?, i remember hearing that the animals would go out hunting during the day and then return to the burrow at night with his family.....my friend said he saw some bears fishing for salmon down by a stream. Anybody else seen this kinda stuff? (I have not).

I might follow a bear around for a day like some sorta nature commentator :D

The AI is so incredibly radiant that it blinds the NPCs to the PCs actions.

Nothing like lobbing a fireball at an NPC and having him just stand there, then ask you about the weather.

Maaasive improvements. No more dull eyed NPC's standing around in front of you spouting crap about mudcrabs. They have fully fledged conversations and there's much more variety in the comments made toward your player character.

Not perfect, especially path finding wise, but still a huge improvement on Oblivion and Fallout.
