Radiant AI improvements?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 8:07 am

I'm planning to work on a RAI or NPC city life/non-combat behavior mod. In the meantime, I seem to remember having read of supposed improvements to RAI, like NPCs returning items you've dropped. Well I promptly tried that and my dagger, necklace, and piece of bread is still there right now.

I'm wondering if any of you have noticed any RAI improvements (not talking about just NPC schedules or animations) or, for that matter, hype that simply isn't there.

Definitely has been improved. A.I don't just talk to random people about random things, they have full conversations with emotion and even animation. They now go to work , they drink beer at the tavern and dance around when bards start playing music. They are aware of each other and say hi to each other on passing by, and companions that you take on journeys with you comment on the world. They will talk about dragons, or a newly discovered cave or give you an opinion or some tidbit information on a ruin you are exploring.

These are just some of the things iv noticed, I will let you know if I find any more! : )

They react to what your wearing, your race, your style in combat, what guilds you join, etc... For example I was once almost over encumbered and a guard told me "you seem to have a lot of gear on you, go to (shop name) to lighten your load.

Well how do you think those NPC's know who's dagger, necklace and bread it is?

I tried dropping a letter addressed to me in the middle of town and a few moments later a courier ran up to me returning it and asking if I'd lost it.
I thought that was pretty cool.

It's subtle

I don't think you'll ever hear a PC say in a whisper "I bet the player doesn't know I'm smarter then the schmucks in Oblivion yet" to the barkeep

This really really really svcks. And I'm gonna be stuck with that dumb AI forever since I don't play on PC ... pffffffffff. I was looking forward to that aspect of the game, mainly because Todd insisted on how cool of a new feature it was (picking up your dropped items). It sounded really great. That'll serve me right, being so gullible. :goodjob:

What makes you think the console AI is sub-par?

Heh. I learned after the whole "AI toned down" in OB. Which I bought hook, line and sinker till I spent days poking at it in the CS.

But if you read Aramyn's post, it seems that returning things is there but is limited to certain items, likely scripted, belonging to the player. I sure didn't get any of the things i dropped returned.

Because console won't have access to mods that fix the AI problems. I'm not saying it's worse than on PC, just that as time passes, the PC will most likely have a slight advantage.

Cruel fate. Being a gamer with hopes :P.
So I guess we can say goodbye to the random semi-scripted NPC quarrels over the sword we just dropped in town. To think they would have the nerve to lie about the same things in the same way once again. That's pretty daring.

I dropped some cabbage in Whiterun. A little girl ran up to me, picked it up and gave it to me "You dropped something mister".

No, couldn't have happened. You can read it right here in this thread: the AI svcks. The internet says so so you must be wrong :teehee:

Hmm. That's good news, but I wonder why it didn't happen for me. Maybe it had something to do with being a big ugly, loincloth-wearing (at the time) orc.

If the AI takes the appearance factor to that degree into account, then I've got nothing to complain about.

But I doubt it.

Aside from the AI performing realistic daily tasks, I can't tell what is Radiant and what is scripted. Either way, though, it's damn impressive.

As awesome as it would be if it did, I've little doubt the AI DOESN'T take it into account to that degree. Was kidding about that. Sorry for not being clear :D

Well after just defeating a ddragon in amining village near some hotsprings ( fighting a dragon in hot steamy water = bad idea by the way). I exceeded my weight limit... so i dropped some stuff in the middle of a that little settlement , darkwater i believe... most of it was books... then this random chixs picks up one of my books, turns to me and says " HEY i think you dropped this, good thing i'm the one who found it!" ... then i'm back to being slowed down again... thanks misses

No worries, I'm not sarcasm impaired :P
I'm too excited for this game, maybe I react too harshly sometimes. I'll have to see for myself tomorrow. *crosses fingers that AI is not oblivionish*

My Nord dropped his entire armor suit once he got into his room at Riverwood. At the time, I couldn't figure out how to store stuff in the wardrobe. Anyways, he dropped his entire suit on the floor, and soem NPC outside said

"say, you're not just going to leave that there are you? You mind if I borrow that armor?"

or something like that. Yea, I was stunned. :stare:

In all other cases, unfortunately, I haven't seen any other NPCs take interest in stuff (like food or even gems) that I've purposely dropped. It was only that one time.

Maybe you first have to sabotage their means to get by, then they'll come running and begging :hubbahubba:

I was wanted for ambushing and destroying an imperial prison escort. Appearently a guard nearby saw it and attempted to arrest me. I resisted, jumped into a river, and made my way to whiterun. I made it to where the gate was but there were guards patrolling. When one caught a glimpse of me he walked over to check it out, and I jumped down into some type of drainage pool as they searched above. I hid under a bridge while some guards went to aid the one searching for me. Unfortunately one saw me, and I paid a fine.

Not sure what you mean. My Nord was in his hotel room with the door closed when this occured, but from what others are describing, they've just dropped stuff out in the open and NPCs respond to this.
