RAGE is Appalling

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 8:21 pm

Hi

I am appalled by the fact you even had the audacity to release this in the first place. In order to get the game to actual get to the point where I could 'see' the game world I've already had to upgrade drivers to a set that have prevented other games from working properly, spend an hour googling to find precisely what to put into a custom configuration file because you decided that we don't need a graphics option menu, and remove the 'base\videos' folder to stop it crashing at a black screen after the f**king annoying and terribly voice acted 'apophis' sequence, only to finally get to something rendered by the all singing all dancing reason for ID software to still exist that is ID Tech 5. This is pathetic:

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/560/2011100700001s.jpg

So what am I meant to do now? At this point I'm considering contacting Steam to try and get my money back. I mean this is after waiting an extra month because you delayed it to 'polish it' (looks like it guys, more like polish each other off) and an addition period of insult because the American market is so much more important than the rest of the world.

So what next? Up until a few hours ago I was a big fan of both Bethseda and ID, for a very long time (I have original copies of everything from Doom 2 onwards, what with Doom only ever being shareware) - do I cancel Skyrim and write you both off as useless? That's what it's looking like at this stage.

Incidentally, I went outside the ark, got more of the AMAZING ID TECH FIVE graphics as per my above screenshot and then RAGE crashed again.

It is pathetic excuses for releases like this that is the reason people torrent games.

I am trying to find the article where John Carmack avoided questions about the game to talk about testing. In this time I find it ironic that you can talk about testing with the amount of unhandled errors I've experienced in the last hour and the amount of times (twice) I've actually made it into engine-rendered material.

Incidentally, you say 'drivers', I assume ID and Bethseda's testing team have invented time travel to get drivers from the future, what with it working fine on your systems without drivers that do not exist yet? Biggest cop out I've ever heard.

At least you saw SHAPES - when I first loaded the game all I got were muttled streaks and blue lines/polygons.. looks like an old Windows 3.1 screensaver... but anyway - have you tried the .cfg file tweak, after about 2 days of /nerdrage I've been able to get the game working, on a 480 GTX, maxed out and it looks almost perfect (some textures still look like quake 1 but hey, it's 99% better).

Try these two links, and GOOD LUCK! (don't give up on it, I feel your anger I felt exactly the same way for the first night, but if you're patient enough and forgiving on their short sightedness for release, you can still enjoy the game)

If you have an ATI card, the first link still provides a "fix".

Hi flubbergun

Thanks for your response, it is much appreciated. I'm guessing we don't get anything helpful out of either Bethseda or ID?

Yes, I've already installed the ATI driver and tried each of those three configs in their entirety. I couldn't even get the game past the apophis opening cutscene (which I was getting EXTREMELY bored with) without deleting the 'videos' folder from 'base' and after that regardless of which config I use I get the screenshot above, in varying degrees of anti-aliasing.

You need to remember it's ATI and Nvidia's fault too.. They should have decent drivers!!

For Ati and nVidia to have specialized drivers for Rage ready,id should have inform them months before the release how the game works.
Looks like they didn't.

Meh - you're STUCK where I was, and can't get out - yeah, Rage is a perfect title, especially having to watch that opening cutscene (which was cool, but after about 5 times you hate it, and after 10 you want to throw a meteor at id HQ)

I've read some things about disabling the ATI "CCC" (I think that's their control panel?), have you tried that, or gone in and manually tweaked some of the settings via the ATI panel, things like forcing VSyne, disabling AA, etc.? I'll try and dig back into some of my bookmarks I made and find the link to the ATI config/panel settings, I know I've seen it, I've been living on these forums since Monday night around 10pm PST (after an hour of pulling my hair out).

Yes of course, since this is being blamed on ATI and nVidia, can I ask what version of the drivers ID and Bethseda used to 'test' this game? I know time travel isn't possible so they're going to be drivers that are available to you or I - and since we're using the latest and greatest (in addition to testing some other versions of drivers) I'm going to call bullsh*t on this particular theory and bat it straight back to the company that is responsible for developing (if you can call it that) this product.

Whileever they fail to provide specifics, in a TIMELY manner due to the delays us on this side of the world have already experienced, their reputation is going to rapidly diminish.

Yep, I read that forcing VSync will crash it, I've tested it with it on and off. I've tested it with triple buffering on and off, and as a throw back to manually editing config.sys to ensure that last vinyl kilobyte of memory is available (lol DOS + DOOM days) I've stripped out every non-essential service and application from boot up. Literally all I have running at the moment is enough Windows services to access the internet, Steam (and the service, since I'm using WIndows 7), and RAGE. This strangely enough didn't help the situation either.

So far I have clocked up 59 minutes of game time according to Steam, I'm yet to see any of the game beyond the opening room in the Ark and the immediate area outside with what appears to be some water. Yes - that's all I'm seeing, water, a lovely sky backdrop, and a whole load of squares where I assume this ultra amazing ID Tech 5 should be rendering me some scenery.

Are you kidding me?

If I create a car, that uses a new element called "Notexistium" to drive, and I sell this car to my customers, who don't know about that fact - because I NEVER TOLD THEM - and when they come to complain "My car does not drive - what can we do? Do you have a fix?" - I can't respond with - "It's Science's problem - they did not provide the element 'Notexistium' yet - it's their fault, we can't help you."

Which ATI drivers did you install

I understand ur pretty pissed off, paying good money for a game you cant play, im not trying to aggravate you more.... but you may have installed the wrong drivers, well you probably did install the correct ones, except that they are dodgy releases.

EDIT: Please post what Card your using, and I'd suggest removing the config file. The config file is fairly unnecessary , its really only needed to get 110% as best as possible results (as best that is currently possible)

Configured as per: http://imgur.com/a/C2eZL - from this article: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2156747

Which ATI drivers did you install

These: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx - as recommended on this article: http://www.bethblog.com/index.php/2011/10/04/playing-rage-on-pc/

And don't worry, my 'RAGE' ('cuse the pun) is aimed at the makers of RAGE specifically, my money however is not going to be much longer.

Thats what i thought,

See my post here:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1238099-do-not-install-rage-ati-drivers/

Your gonna have to uninstall your driver and reinstall. IF at the very least use the normal 11.9 drivers (not the rage performance)

EDIT: I'd seriously consider if you wana keep the config file you created,

see it as trial and error.

Start simple, test the game, then work your way up rather than slapping on a full deck and realizing something in between has gone wrong.

At the very least, you could copy the config file to safe place and test, and if needed returned.

Will do - you need to edit your article though, you've copied the shortened URL for http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalystOpenGL42BetaWin.aspx (first link in your article).

Sorry for being naive enough to follow the advice published by the publisher of the game... sigh.

Back shortly!

Don't worry, I know all about trouble shooting. I just loathe the concept of continuing my day job at home once I'm trying to relax. Every change I have made has been incremental and tested in each scenario, now I have another scenario to test in (another set of drivers) to add to my testing. Driver downloading and installing, rebooting shortly.

stop posting stupid garbage, I'm appalled you didnt go get the lastest drivers, or beta drivers to play the [censored] game don't go and expect a game with this new graphics quality and everything will work on a old driver.

I'm sure the makers made this game run wonderful on current drivers they used.

Stop trolling ID because you fail to spend the time to get the correct working driver to play the game maybe you should do some research before you rant on the game when you can clearly see this picture of yours is your graphics card driver related. Once you fix that then your "appalled" problem with the game will go away.

Learn to read the rest of the thread as to what I have already done, you're only making yourself look [censored], and, for what it's worth, the actual quality of the textures isn't that far ahead of anything else from 2005 - it's just a new technology powering how it all works, fan-boi.

Edit: I love the censoring on here.

Ok, graphics drivers updated to the ones suggested by Your Nemesis, which, since we have inherited a fan-boi evangelist (yuitre) are NOT the ones suggested by Bethseda. Graphics now look like:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/2011100700002.jpg/

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/2011100700003.jpg/

This is the case both WITHOUT a rageConfig.cfg, and using the 'low quality' config from the steam thread referenced earlier in this thread.

What is your GPU temp? It could be overheating. I remember experiencing this back with the NVIDIA 7900 series on Counter-Strike Source and then my card ended up getting fried in about a week.

ALSO, remember to completely clean out your computer. Your fans, your heatsink on your CPU and your GPU heatsink. This may require unescrewing of the heatsinks to get all the dust out and then reappling new thermal paste. You can find thermal paste at your local computer store. This may help you if your experiencing graphic problems or FPS problems.

(To apply new thermal paste take rubbing alchol to remove the old thermal paste on both the processor and heatsink as well as the GPU and its heatsink, then apply just a small dab onto the processor and a pretty nice spread on the GPU.)

Because of driver issues from ATI? You must be an idiot. This is truly one of the most polished games of our time. The gameplay feels like what gaming used to be. If you're too blind to see this, then you have no idea how it was to be a computer gamer in the early 90's to mid 2000's.

But what you think, is completely wrong.

My GPU temperature is 57 degrees in game - it gets warmer playing WoW.

My PC was dismantled and rebuilt 3 weeks ago (2 weeks 5 days, since I did it on the Sunday), I cleaned out not all that much dust and it runs perfectly fine. This is not a PC issue. I have more than 30 other games installed on this machine ranging from World of Warcraft (CPU taxing) to Deus Ex Human Revolution, both Mass Effects, GTA 4, etc... I'm getting a very solid 60 FPS after installing the driver recommended by Your Nemesis between crashes in RAGE, it's just texture issues and crashes.

Edit: Yes, including new thermal paste, I didn't do the graphics card because the graphics card was only taken out of its packaging the day I rebuilt it (and was ironically purchased specifically to avoid these kind of issues when RAGE was released.)

Edit 2: I'm willing to call it poor because of initial experiences - it's now been 4 hours of trying to get this thing to work to a playable point and I completely believe I'm entitled to call it poor due to this. I'd never stoop as low as comparing it to Daikatana, that's in an entire different league of it's own.
