Does anyone know how many copies of RAGE were sold across the three platforms?

As of October 8th it was somewhere in the 300-350k range. By the 15th I'm guessing maybe 500k. I'm guessing these are disappointing numbers. word of mouth is probably polar but when I was in gamestop I did see many random propel remark on the beauty of the graphics and picking up a copy, so maybe it wont have to much of a dropoff and sell somewhere in 1-2 million range who knows...

Thanks much! Across all platforms?
Any chance I could get a link to this info?
I would really like to see a breakdown between platforms as well, if possible

As for PC digital download sales, these sales figures are not released, but it the digital download sales for some titles can be as high as 600% more than the PC retail boxed version. Without hazarding any sort of guess as to the number of digital download sales, it would seam reasonably possible that RAGE sold around 1 million units or at least close to that (across all platforms) during the first week.

Although we don't know how many digital downloads were sold, we do know that RAGE was the top selling title on Steam last week. (Source: http://www.bluesnews.com/s/126402/steam-top-10)

I would imagine there will probably be some sort of press release in the next couple of weeks about sales surpassing 1 million or 2 million units.

If you compare it to previous iD franchise's, RAGE is a total flop.
Doom < ground braking
Quake < ground braking
RAGE < "oh yeah I've heard of that. Apparently its really buggy"

This is what happens when a media studio comes along and tries to play in the gaming industry.
... but iD is just what ATi is to AMD. A badge. This game is a Zenimax game, not an iD game. iD don't exist anymore.

75 millions ? Are you crazy lol! I heard rage cost 25 millions over 6 years. So they are already doing good money with rage and they will get more sales in th upcoming weeks. So I guess rage is a success and we will see rage 2 announcement in the near futur.

Although developing the id Tech 5 engine was probably quite costly, I would imagine this cost gets amortized over the life of the engine (expense allocated to the various games that will use it), so it would probably not be directly included in the production budget for RAGE.

That's silly considering the fact that the same people who deeveloped those games made Rage (with some new people too, of course.)

I think the more likely explanation is that the rest of the industry has caught up with them, in part due to Carmack's efforts to release source code and share the tech he developed.

For starters, we dont even know the actual sales numbers yet. But even if new numbers trickling in dont add a huge amount, it doesnt necessarily mean anything more than the fact that the markets are completely different now.
People complaining about the most assinine details, before a patch or news that the drivers were jacked probably didn't help either- you know, unwarranted negativity......
What ultimately wound up making Quake and DOOM the greats we all know and love? Mods. I will revisit this thread after the full dev tools are delivered and people have had a chance to start modding.

As I said, the markets are completely different now. Gamers are very fickle and feel, IMHO too entitled. Just my two cents.

Any rate. Can anyone tell me what the first week sales numbers were from DOOM and Quake?

I don't know what the first week sales were, but over the entire product life cycle, DOOM 3 sold about 3.6 million units worldwide (all platforms), DOOM 2 sold about the same and DOOM sold 2.8 million PC copies (excluding all the various ports to numerous platforms like SNES, etc.).

I'm guessing this also excludes shareware sales - according to id's website tens of millions of shareware copies were sold:

"Selling millions of copies and chalking up tens of millions of downloads as shareware, DOOM remains one of the most popular PC games ever. "

Some of the Quake information seems to be incomplete, but from what I can gather, Quake 4 sold about 275,000 units on Xbox (PC sales not provided), Quake sold about 300,000 units on N64 (other platforms sales not provided) and according to id's website, the total for Quake 2 was over 1 million units for all platforms:

QUAKE II was a watershed hit for the company, selling more than one million copies, despite it's steep hardware requirements.

http://www.idsoftware.com/business/history/
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/1819/quake-4/
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/1820/quake-ii/
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/1818/quake/
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/7289/doom-3/
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/6233/doom-ii/
http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/6232/doom/

Judging by the excellent first week sales, it seems likely that RAGE will sell at least a few million units over the course of the next few months, resulting in one of the most successful id game releases to date.

Even if the game doesn't sell well for id Software, all hope isn't lost for them. They now have one of, if not the best video game engines on the market that other developers can license (as long as their game gets published by Bethesda).

id may hurt for a bit I suspect but just as soon as maybe 10 hours of DLC appear on their behalf: people will revisit or at least perk their heads up the first time. Rage is a solid product and therefore replayability applies. Let's all hope it doesn't take a decade for folks to notice like Psychonauts...

Thanks again for all of the info, BootySweat!

I agree with you guys that after DLC and modding tools are avalable, it will bost sales quite nicely.
Also, after all fo the knee jerk negativity dies down and people arent scared off by it.

and of course other titles will use this engine.
60fps with that level of (control over) detail makes it an easy sale.

Also don't forget that one of id's biggest income sources are the various engine licences.

Every copy of Call of Duty that has ever been sold (from 1 right up to MW3) includes a small royalty payment to id as they are all based on Quake 3 engine licences.

I would imagine the same applies to Half Life/CS (not sure about Source engine games) as they were based on the Quake engine.

id Software don't need to make games to survive. That is why they can afford to employ a few hundred people for 7 years working on a game.

id no longer licenses game engines. id tech 5 will not be licensed outside the bethesda family. They have already made it clear that they have gotten out of the licensing business as they didnt enjoy it as much. Unsure how their salaries / bonuses are effected with internal use depending if there are others using it in the 1st place, right now publicly its only Rage and Doom 4 using the engine.

What engines were licensed before, they would only make money on them if the license agreement terms were based on some % of sales as opposed to a fixed licensing cost. If it was the latter only then any game using their engine will not contribute to a payment towards them.

And yes they probably need to make games to survive now, considering inflation, cost of development and the fact they have like 200 employees...

I seem to recall the Call of Duty credits still have a reference to id software, thus why I think they are still paying them. It is normal for a game engine licence to be a % of sales otherwise if the game becomes a hit the engine developers don't get to enjoy it.

Even though I am somewhat disappointed with Rage, I really do hope it ends up being a commercial success, that would improve the chances of getting a substantial amount of DLC.

^^ +1

Id needs RAGE to do well. The only thing that may be a break for Bethesda is that the first few years of that 7 year drought since doom 3 was on ids dime, how that factored into the selling of the company, who knows. Also the devolopment team on Rage in the first few years was about 40 and it's been ramped up every year and ofcourse probably close to the max 200 during crunch. So I would be interested to know the production cost of the game I'm guessing it's bigger than what people might realize. I hope it gets great word of mouth it's such a polarizing title but most of ids titles are. Led Zeppelin was always beat up by music critics during their day, look at how legendary of a place they hold now in rock music and those are the same critics that later then changed their minds about the band.
