Rangers

Post » Thu Nov 29, 2012 8:22 am

I'm still very happy kicking about in Skyrim with my main character, but waiting on Dragonborn DLC is like waiting for Bethesda to fix something in-game. So, i've decided i'll pass the time by making a new character. I have a rough idea of what i'd like to do, but thought i'd get some of your opinions.

I'd like to play another "Ranger" character. Taking the usual description, i'm thinking Aragorn from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I have played what I consider a ranger-type character before, but was hoping you guys could give me your thoughts as to what a Ranger might have skill-wise in Skyrim. Also, should I use armour or clothes, followers or solo and what of housing and horses?

Discuss!

Erm... A bow and dagger (Duh)

And either...

Nightingale Armour
Thieves Guild/ Guildmaster's Armour
Leather Armour
Any kind of hood
YOU MUST HAVE A BEARD

Skills: Restoration (Aragorn's good at healing), Alchemy (Again, Aragorn loves sticking weeds in wounds), Light Armour, One-Handed, Archery.

Duh, indeed hence I didn't ask about weapons ;)

Beards are in though i'm torn between 3 at the moment. And what about colour! So many choices!

Skills look good. Guildmaster's Armour takes too long to obtain IMO, but the rest looks like it could work.

Interesting approach. Didn't even consider the use of VL. And the way to overcome the stats regen... I love it!

Happy to help :P And I'd say a black five o'clock shadow :P Because Aragorn's beard is, well, a beard, but it isn't long and unkempt, it's short and neat :)

And personally, I believe that Nightingale Armour definitely looks the best for Rangers. Maybe, MAYBE without the Hood...

And P.S, I personally find the higher-level Mages hoods to be good, as they are dark in colour :D

Yeah, that is one of my choices - the other being the 6th option from the start. A full, but short beard. Looks good IMO. Black seems to suit better as you say. Can you get un-enchanted higher-level mages hoods? Not something i've ever bothered with if i'm honest. Nightingale Armour goes with almost anything :D

Namira's quest really bugs me. Creepy beyond anything else! Might have to deal with it for this though.

Stamina for rangers seems to be the way to go. Though magic and health are important too. Hmm... which should be the priority?

Maybe one of the gray vampire armors... kind of long coat looking. Or one of the darker dg armors with sleeves. The fancy vampire royal armor is cool too, the one with the cape. Perhaps a little much for a ranger, though.

Have you read any of the Rangers Apprentice books? Youth age targeted reading, but good anyway. The ranger in that one is the one I like to pattern my Rangers after.

True :)

Well, if it moves.... Thinking game, i.e deer, elk, rabbit, mammoth. Maybe the occasional Thalmor/Stormcloak/Imperial Guard patrol.

An interesting thought, though I must admit, I personally dislike them. They look good on vampires but other then that seem... ugly. I will have another look though. Royal Vampire Armour is great but is it really for a ranger? Should the grey 'cloak' fit, what footwear would you use?

Rangers Apprentice books? Can't say I have... Sounds worth it though.

my ranger is more along the lines of a DnD themed ranger so the build has been a mix of archer/spellsword. primary skills are archery, one handed, alteration, and restoration, secondary are light armor, sneak, and destruction. she focuses on smithing and alchemy for craft skills. spells are restricted to those that i can associate with nature or druids(flesh spells, healing, light, some minor destruction type spells) and mostly used for utility and defense rather than offense. she only wears hide. leather, fur or forsworn armor. obviously she is wood elf and makes use of the command animal ability frequently, only killing animals when necessary, and making sure to put their furs and meats to good use letting nothing go to waste. she is dragonborn and utilizes the more primal and nature oriented shouts, firebreath, call storm, animal allegiance, and kynes peace are her favorites. so ya, sort of a ranger/druid hybrid i suppose rather than a LOTR aragorn style ranger. its fun and different none the less

Nice description! My past ranger fits into this rather well, albeit the Alteration perk tree. I dabbled with Alteration a few times, but couldn't get it to fit into my character. Going from what you've said, I assume you used it for the 'skin' spells? If so, were there any other spells you used from said school?

almost entirely for the skin spells, they are really a necessity when fighting tougher hitting and 2h weapon wielding foes since hide and fur armors dont really allow alot for armor rating(plus i dont enchant so i am limited to what i can find and upgrade myself), so far ive only picked adept, and apprentice perks but im going to pick up stability and and the magic resistance ones eventually. lately i have been testing out wards to bolster my defense's and they seem to work pretty well too when combined with the flesh spells. the real challenge that i am having is balancing my health/stamina/magica since all three are needed to make the class work, so far ive kept them all pretty balanced but favor health and magica slightly

I see. May I ask as to what your stats are? I always have a major self-debate session when it comes to characters like this. Stamina and health always seem important, but to use skin spells, magicka seems equal. I personally dislike wards, but can see how they can be useful in this situation. Though, would wards be a 'ranger' thing?

Ranger threads are few are far between, which is a shame :( I love rangers!! :D Your stats are similar to my original ranger's stats though mine were considerably lower. I was playing DID and had a rather negative discussion with a frost troll :/

archery and paralysis potions solved that problem, plus if you can't beat them disappear! but frost trolls are major trolls.

ya sure, atm i think i have magica 190, health 220, sta 170 she is lvl 29 atm, not sure if that is with or without the gear im using atm i just have those numbers in my head haha, i can do a full rundown of the skills and perks so far if you want when i jump on later. as far as wards go thats really the main problem ive had using them is that i cant really tie it into the class from a lore perspective

I like to drop Runes down as traps. In the wild ill try and drop a rune then sneak crit with a bow. They'll see me, run hit the rune and die or I've hit them a coupe times with arrows or dropped into a single dagger attack.

I always forget to use potions in combat ;) Poisons too! I'm terrible when it comes to buffs. Frost trolls are, without a doubt, a pain in the lower abdomen.

Please. I'm paranoid that i'll again stat my ranger either under magicka or over magicka. Would be good to see some other character's stat breakdowns.
