Reaction to Heartfire DLC from a PC Gamer Prospective.

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 3:21 pm

If you are playing Skyrim on the xbox 360 or playstation 3, I'm sure news of Heartfire is causing you to jump up and down with joy. For $5? What a great price, when I saw the trailer I half expect bethesda to be selling these for the price of dawnguard. All the deprived console gamers can get an awesome home mod for their games. Sounds great!

But for the people playing on PC....what do we get exactly? Honestly I understand the money to be made from focusing your game development to appease console players, but the PC is what started Elder Scrolls. I truly believe the PC is how you're suppose to play Elder Scrolls. Nothing wrong with playing the game for console. I just feel like the developers should show as much interest in creating content that will be amazing for all the platforms.

When I look at heartfire I see a home mod. Well... there are literally thousands of home mods already made, more being made as we speak, plus even some where you "create your own home". On top of all the ones already created, you can go create your own already in the creation kit! Sure this DLC will probably be more polished and detailed. There are actually a lot of home mods that I bet will even have way more utilization and versatility than this DLC. One that I use, Grey Manor Lodge actually is a no load doors home (which I like) that features an amazing auto sorting system!

I don't want to seem like I'm complaining because really Heartfire looks solid and $5 is a very fair price for it. Honestly, I just see something that doesn't benefit the PC gamer as much as I think it should. I think if this included a re-vamp of the marriage system, make it more meaningful and things to do with your spouse. Maybe to marry someone you need to complete a little quest for them, or give them gifts, you know, establish a relationship. Make it so your spouse feels special to you, maybe some random events once your married, (quests once married?) and then being able to have a child with your spouse I think would be icing on the cake. Those are things that a PC gamer would be extremely thankful for.

I would like to close on a positive note and just say, I love your games Bethesda. One of the last companies making good games anymore. Just wanted to share my PC gamer's reaction about this DLC announcement.

Hard to explain. It just feels better to be playing something official.

See it as the tiny consolidation prize console gamers get for not having the dev kit to hand. You don't have to pay for that and it's worth far more than £5 worth of dlc.

PC player here. Things that are officially released and are made to run natively (from the people who made the game themselves) will always run better than user-created content, period.

And for people who don't want to install user-created mods, Hearthfire is a good thing. And for five bucks too, what the heck.

EDIT: I am SO going to get disagreed on this, but this is my opinion and I am not going to read/reply to any other backlashes in this thread. First and last time in this thread.

Almost all TES DLC have some roots in a mod.

Not really sure how I feel. The house building mod is still very good, but there's not really a huge amount of variety to it.

I'll probably buy it anyway sometime in the future.

This. Absolutely. 100%. Mods are for people who have endless hours to tweak, test, try out, delete, reinstall, backup, restore... I don't have that kind of time being that a) I have a family, B) I have a full time job and c) I'd rather spend my spare time playing than TRYING to play. So, new games like Skyrim, I will never install a single mod, straight OEM. And for older games like Morrowing, I'll try inclusive improvements, like the Sound & Graphics mod. But, it's a 50/50 shot that it's going to hose the game. In my case, it hosed the game, irrevocably, and needed a full delete and reinstall, back to square one. So, no, for me, mods are useless, and I'm sure I'm not alone, just maybe a little more vocal than most.

I don't think this needs to turn into a discussion about, I mod, I don't mod, modding is good, modding is bad. But I do want to mention that modding has become more fluid and seamless than ever before. Whether you enjoy the workshop mods and/or managers like NMM. It's easier and safer then it has been in the past with many people willing to help you learn the processes. So since I personally have learned the ins and outs of modding, I can't go back. I see modding as a way to enhance the visual look of the game, erase annoyances in the base game, or add life/content to the game. I don't know how many people mod compared to don't mod, of active players. But I'm sure there are a lot of both.

I just think if they are going to release a DLC like this, it would be really nice to see some more game play tweaks in addition to adoptions. Like I mentioned in the top post, a re-vamp of the marriage system. Getting married and married life. I'd probably pay more for something that boosted the game play and immersion of the game.

The new crafting stations are worth $5 in and of itself. Crafting and cooking mods are going to be able to get a lot bigger and better because of this.

I see nothing wrong with this. It includes a pretty major feature that appears to be very fleshed out for just $5. And it will have official support, which means I won't have to worry about it being incompatible with the mods I use since they will likely adapt to work with it. Pretty much a win-win for me since I wanted this type of mod, but the hassle of finding a good one that is compatible with my mods is just too annoying.

If you're really that bummed about it (I don't really care either way about it), just think that it's removing the 30-day Xbox exclusivity for the DLCs.

I'm happy about it, i wont have to wait a month wanting to play it like i did with Dawnguard as there is are mods similar to this, its cheap so i will get it at the time, and any new DLC we will get on release, and it looks quite a fun little dlc.

Even if you don't use it directly, it's value as a modder resource is invaluable. There are already daedric crossbows, dragonbone, dwemer, mini-siege machines...all based on Dawnguard resources. Who knows what kind of modular houses will we be able to build with Hearthfire as base...

Maybe after tearing off this proverbial bandage the PS3 players can get some love.

I'm a PC player myself, but I'm happy for the consoles players. I will buy this add-on because it is
not only a house-DLC. It will add a few new features that will expand greatly upon the RPG element
of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Now, I'm a modder myself, and I could create my home from scratch, almost anywhere in Skyrim. But
I would enjoy the opportunity to make my own home in-game, as it adds to the experience and immersion
of the game. 5$? Seriously.. This is definitely a fair asking price.

Sure this DLC will probably be more polished and detailed.

I actually doubt that.

I am sure Hearthfire will start a whole new group of mods to use in Skyrim. Nothing wrong with more content. As for me, I am a console player, so I will be definitely be getting Hearthfire. It's only $5. The DLC is cheaper than pizza delivery! You mind as well get it.

Mods =/= developer content.
Developer content is likely add more to the game as a whole, and with more polish - voice acting, for example. As the developer, Bethesda have both the skills and tools to make a higher quality product than most modders. This isn't a statement against modders, it's just a fact.
