Remember Project Beauty? Well, guess what!

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:42 am

This is a mod I've been dying to see and just had to tell the world about it. (I have no affiliation with the author of this mod in any way other than being BIG a fan of his work.)

I think just about everyone who ever modded Fallout 3 is familiar with the fantastic work of Dracomies in his http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6341 mod. Well the master of NPC's is back with http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39218.

To be honest, I haven't even installed it yet. After looking at the images, I just got so pumped, I had to let others know!

So this is an FYI thread to the modding community and not an official release thread by any stretch.

Oh, and Bethesda...why isn't this guy's phone ringing? Hrm? If you don't get what I mean, please read #5 http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/12/30/15-things-we-want-to-see-in-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/. You guys have proven that you need all the help you can get in this area.

I saw him posting in his FO3 thread on Nexus that he was working on it, freaking awesome. :)

Instant download.

Has Wyre Flash/Garrybash got the import npc face feature like the Fallout3 version?

That'd overwrite the compatability problems!

Wrye Flash NV certainly does have the import NPC faces feature. Its rather unfortunate that not enough people knew about using the tool to fix compatibility issues in Project Beauty, as it would have solved plenty of peoples' problems.

Anyways, Im looking forward to sprucing up some of the NPC faces for my new character.

Just so I'm completely clear on it, this wouldn't have ant problem running with http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35878 as this is NPC faces and Project Mikoto just adds hair to NPCs and PC...correct?

Yeah that raisin and ape line was a riot. They really nailed it. :goodjob:

Anyhow, I tried out Redesigned last night and it was great. There are still more NPCs to go, but he got many of the most annoying ones. He's still actively working on it, so if you install it and run into any NPCs that need work, let him know which over at the Nexus.

Load it before that mod and tag it with faces in wrye flash and update your bashed patch.

Been using this since it came out and it's amazing! Highly recommended!

Nope. Not if both mods directly edit the same NPCs. You'll need a patch to get the two of them to work together. You can try to make your own with wrye flash, or maybe someone else can make one for you.

Dracomies modifies most races to accept default eyelashes. This will break any and all cosmetic packs, as well as any mod that relies on a cosmetic pack. Dracomies specifically disallows his work to be altered or included in other releases so compatibility patches cannot be publicly released.

The addition of new redundant race copies also means that simply chopping off the race section in FNVedit will break several dozen NPCs.

This is all done intentionally to ensure you, the player, get his pure vision unsullied by anyone else's work. I think it svcks, but it is his mod and his choice.

Strange, I'm running this with your Lings Coiffure mod and it works fine. My character still has eyelashes and so do a lot of NPCs (not all of them, Cass doesn't for example). I'm also using custom hair and eyes added by your mod. I have all the awesomeness of the faces by Dracomies and the awesomeness added by your mod.

Following the instructions that you have given Hellknight for the bashed patch should guarantee that everything works together.
And there were compatibility patches for Project Beauty HD (FO3) released to allow it to work with FWE-MMM.

Its cool that Wrye does that. I might have to finally check it out. Of course, I made my own compatibility patch for NV Lings and the hundreds of hotties I had already tweaked.

What is sad is I cannot release a patch for the huge majority of users who have no clue how to resolve conflicts. I don't like forcing people to chose one or the other when having both is a simple matter.

Not sure if the PB patches for FO3 were authorized or merely were granted when Dracomies stopped working on PB. He denied me permission to patch PB for Lings, and the permission restrictions for his NV mod pretty clearly do not allow for compatibility patches.

Oh yeah, WryeFlash is pretty awesome. As far as mod compatibility managing goes it's the best tool out there along with FNVEdit. It can merge lists (leveled or just FormID), race records, hairs, eyes, NPC faces, inventory, scripts and many many other things. Not very user friendly if you don't know how the game works under the hood though, but you proved that's not a problem for you ;)

You could add detailed instructions on how to solve it but keep in mind that even setting up WryeFlash can be a PITA so users will probably have issues at one step or another... meaning that you'll spend quite a lot of time explaining and asking questions.

I would prefer some NPC's to be ugly after redesign, too.
Only naturally and believably ugly.

It doesn't make everyone miss/mister universe. You can also try the lore version.

Why would you not want your mod to play nice with others? It's win/win. I don't understand how it ruins a grand vision, but I could understand someone saying it "ruins a grand vision" to cover up the fact that they just don't want to share modding spotlight with the things made compatible.

From the Legal Issues section of the description on the Nexus:

You are free to do whatever you wish to do with the mod as long as it is for yourself. You may not redistribute any of the contents in this package, place the direct files in your "compilations", distribute "patches" with my direct faces in them, etc..

He's not saying you can't make a compatibility patch. He's saying that a patch should not include his actual files. That's no different than what was done with Project Beauty for F3. It's also very similar to what a lot of other modders state in their disclaimers. I think that's reasonable.

Ultimately though it's personal perspective. I won't let friends drive my car. Some think it's reasonable, others think it's dikeish. It's just a personal perspective.

As a fellow modder you feel his disclaimer is dikeish which is totally your call. To each their own. :tops:

I'm sure quality modders who contact him and ask his permission to allow for patches would be allowed to.

Well, that clearly disqualifies me.

Actually, he's saying you cannot include his faces in any "patch". Since NPC's only have one entry, ANY patch for his mod MUST contain his face data. He's a barrister. He's quite clever with words.

He's also a talented artist whatever his disposition, so I honor his restrictions however much I find them distasteful.

I don't if or why he would do that. I guess I'll find out when I'm going to make Companion Sandbox Mode compatible with it.

Nope. From personal experience, even if you ask the answer's still a no. Haven't a clue why he'd care so long as he got the proper credit, but it's his prerogative. I don't mind it too much; it's kind've hard for me to not appreciate one of the few modders that actually improves on the in-game appearances instead of turning them into 12-year-old anime girls. What's more irritating IMO is the screeching by users at other authors to make their mods compatible with Project Beauty as if it's somehow their faults.

Fortunately nowadays you can just make a Bashed patch, though it doesn't address all issues, such as any pre-patch differences that are included in the Redesigned NPC data still in need of fixing.
