RIP Graphics Card

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:07 am

I been getting particles whilst playing this game. The first time I notice it whilst playing Borderlands and its much worst then these two pics.
Is it a sign that my graphics card on the way out?
I checked my event viewer its Blue screen.
BTW. Its made by HIS.

Your event viewer? Its blue screen? Are you getting blue screens?
The particles seem pretty minor to me. Any other games you notice them in (other than BLs and fallout)?

Yes I just came from a hard crash after my computer crashed from 'Racing Driver Grid.' The first race went good but the second race these squares came up on the monitor. Its like shader one blood splatter. I tried to take a screen shot at it but monitor went all funny and heard audio feed back through my headphones.

Check the temperature of your GPU/CPU.
If it's too high I would then have a look at the fan and check if they are working right/need to be cleaned.

It looks like your getting the exception code 0x00000019. I would recommend doing a quick memory test. Also temp stuff as Zoido said.
Windows 7 comes with its own memory tester. Start ->Textbox type memory. Select windows memory diagnostic and your computer will
prompt a reboot. Let the tests run to completion.

You can also try a clean boot to windows

clean boot link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Step 1 and try it.

Google the exception code for other ideas. Theres a wealth of info out there.

Just done the memory test and it say there is nothing wrong with it.
Done the Temperature:

At this moment I downloading a driver from HIS. If it done the same thing I try the latest one from AMD.

After I done with this I will do the clean boot.

Idle temperature of your video card is 70 degrees? YOu got up into the 100's max? Thats way too hot. Your card should NOT be idling in the 70's. Theres an issue with the card somewhere IMO.
Are you overclocking it? You will want to turn down the clocks if you are. This is probably a temperature issue. Max temp for my EVGA geforce 275 was around 110 degrees and your easily reaching that.

How old is the card? The issue may be heatsink/thermal paste related. You want to make sure your fans are all clear of dust. Make sure your card fan is spinning properly.

No its not overclocked.
Like I typed earlier I clean 3 to four weeks ago. Have to check it again.
I brought the card back May or June 2009.

I forget to tell you something.
I live in Australia, its summer and the room temp is about late 20 to early 30.
Will those temp outside the case make a difference to the temps inside the case?

Also I looked at the graphics card after I turn off the computer and carefully took out from the motherboard and there no dust blocking the heat sinks. The only dust there is on the surface of the fins.
I cleaned all the fans and grills by using a pastry brush and still reading 73 degrees C. Also I download a Gadget 'GPU Observer' and check it with hardware monitor and they are reading the same.
I rang the bloke who built the computer and told him about the temperature and he say its normal in idle. Still he told me still dose not explain about that Blue screen. Next time I go to town (If not flooded) I take it to him and check it out.

I did some quick research on the net and while your idle temp could probably be justified by high ambient temperature (55-60 °C seems to be normal for 4870 512MB cards), I think values above 100 °C under load are too much (~85°C reported).

When a temperature inside the tower 100 c by touching the tower will you notice?

By touching a frying pan no matter it a stove top or electric for one second it will burn your hand.

I doubt that the temp inside the tower will reach 100°C (if so you DO have a problem).

What is measured is the temp on the chip itself.
If you cleaned your fans and gratings maybe the fan is not working right.
Have you manually set the (max) speed of the fan?

That does seem hot. You said the only dust you could see was on the fins. The fins are the radiator and that dust is insulatating it, preventing it from dissipating heat. I've never cleaned a gpu but that dust has to go. Compressed air should get most of it.

Room temp. can most definitely affect PC temps. And a hot PC blowing hot air out the back all day can even make a room's temp. rise, over time. :P I use an air conditioner in my room during the summer for precisely that reason. However, the weather temps you stated shouldn't cause the pc temps to be that high, unless your room itself is actually getting much hotter, or you have very bad airflow in the case. Maybe 50C, but 70C is getting up there for idle at those room temps, imo.

Make sure all the fans in your case are actually working, not just the one on the GPU. And if your pc case has a front grill with the foam lining, take that off and bang the dust out of the foam, that can block airflow a little if it builds up too much, too. If cleaning/dusting everything doesn't work...it may be time for a new card, imo, yes. Could be it's been running too hot for a while now, before you noticed, and something is finally giving out.

The ambient temperature does indeed effect your computers internal temperature. late 20 early 30? Celsius? SO your saying your card in idle is rising around 40 degrees? ouch :obliviongate:
It is possible the temperature sensor is damaged or inaccurate. If it is indeed exceeding temperatures of 100 Celsius, the card (specifically the heatsink) should be very hot and I wouldnt recommend touching it. Just placing your hand close to it should be enough.

The "normal" aspect of temperatures with convection cooling is relative as it depends on the current temperature the computer is located in. However, imo that idle temperature is far too high. I would expect the card to be closer to your cpu temperature although probably higher. If the card is reaching 100+ during this time of year then what might it reach during other times. I agree with lady in that it has probably been running too hot for awhile and is showing signs of either temperature stress (artifacts) or its starting to give out.

As far as the blue screen is concerned the two may be completely unrelated. How ooften do you get it and when? DUring normal applications.... during gaming only?

Sorry for not replying sooner I just got out of bed.

@ El Zoido. How do I adjust the fan at the gpu? I have Everest Ultimate edition and I have no way to adjust the fan through it. By looking at Sensors-Cooling fans the gpu fan is going only 23% in idle and the temperature now is 70 in idle. CPU its speed 1795 RPM. Temps 30s to 40s.

@ Trm8r. With compress air. I have to be careful. Moisture in compass air. I can still see the black of the fins and its mostly clean.

@ LadyCrimson. I have four fans, 22cm fan at the side blowing in, 9cm fan blowing out, 12cm fan svck out the belongs to the power supply and two others gpu and cpu. All spinning said for the one blowing out. Not spinning fast enough I think. None at front and top. Next time I go to two I take this with me where I got this computer made and check the temperature there. They have air con. I have a fan blowing at the tower but not making a big impact. The strange thing about this house is its hotter upstairs then down only about 5 c.

@ Jesper. I did touch the sinks and it was a little hot. As for blue screens none like looking at web sites, editing pictures, looking email, typing and idling no. As for gaming, first was threes week ago because I download gpu driver through steam without removing the other because it did not give me a chance to remove the AMD driver. That was my first blue screen. So I removed the Steam driver, then remove the AMD driver and install that AMD driver again manually. Between then last Sunday there was none. Since last Sunday 3 hard crashes with two games. Borderland and Grid. Not including today which is Tuesday 8:06am.

Before I went to bed I played fallout for 45 minutes, starting temp was 69 and the finishing temp 76 when I got out from the game.
Another games effect it which is a 10 year old game. Citizen Kabuto: Giants. Little square particles like in Fallout NV.

Sometimes you can set the max fan speed in the driver, but if you never did don't mind it.

How do I do that. The driver I downloaded yesterday is from HIS for that card I have. All I have is ATI Overdrive, Auto-Tune next button down, two levers for the clock & memory and Test Custom Clocks buttons. That is all I got. I have Speed Fan but that is for the cpu and hard drive.

Assuming the searches I did for your card listed in your sig actually came up with your card in the results, there's ways to adjust the fan speed using profiles or something.

Forum thread: http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=456350

YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gedv6MB0QBI

....but of course, make sure it's actually the same card they're talking about. I'm not an ATI person so I'm not 100% sure...just going by that HD 4870 number. And if that's not quite it, more Google search might find something else.

I have another problem. I followed the instruction by the letter and it did not work. I notice something in that You-tube he dose not have a pad lock next to his or her name but I have. I gather he or she is using W7 and I like to know how to get rid off the pad lock?

I like to thank everybody for helping out but we not done yet!!!

Unfortunately I didn't use an ATI card in the last 2-3 years, so I cannot really help you in finding out how to adjust the fan speed.
Try searching the internet a bit. It might also depend on the driver version you are using, or you might need an additional tool for it.

Be aware though, that it might be that the card is damaged and it's not just a temporal overheating problem.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but have you tried clicking on the padlock icon in ATI Overdrive?

I'm using a different ATI graphics card, but the padlock in my version shows as unlocked, and if I hover the mouse pointer over it, it says it was unlocked on 06/05/10, which is about when I got my new PC, so I assume I unlocked it then (I can't remember).

I also have an Enable Manual Fan Speed control under the Test Custom Clocks icon.

Otherwise, I'd suggest contacting ATI support.
