Safest place to live now and in the future?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:56 am

Without getting into politics or religion, where do you think the safest place to live on this planet would be... reasonably speaking. No bubble colonies under the ocean.

Based on current events and possible outcomes, what place is likely to endure over time?

Switzerland. Albert Einstein once said if World War 3 were to break out, he'd want to be there, because it takes at least 50 years for anything to happen.

Nothing happens in Malta. It's pretty safe. I don't think I can be safer anywhere else.

Scandinavia and Switzerland, possibly Canada as well. Scandinavia and Switzerland because they don't seem to attract a lot of negative/unwanted attention, and Canada for the same reason although its geographical location (neighbor with the United States) makes me a little less certain for the future.

edit: I feel Europe as a whole is a pretty safe continent to live in right now (with the exception of a few countries like Russia), but I'm not sure it will stay this way in the future... it's hard to predict that sort of things

Considering geographical and weather conditions as well... plate tectonics, volcanic activity, risk of tsunami, risks of hurricanes or tornadoes, etc.

My secret base i made from a hollowed out mountain in canada
I would have to say any military base in the US considering that they are designed to operate for months without resupply and have access to some of the best equipment that you can legally get your hands on... by any legal standard.
If not that, then the Demilitarized zone that seperates north and south korea. that thing is just insane. minefields, barbed wire fences, 24-hour guards, and this one random cardboard standee of Kty Perry. Nothing is getting through there.

10-16ft above sea level, 6 feet above the nearest water body, and if possible, on a hill. In terms of avoiding natural disasters, somewhere near the east side of the Appalachians is one option.

Nowhere, no matter where you live there's danger. What you really mean is where on earth is the place to live that gives me the biggest illusion of being the safest place.

My basemant.

Come live here! Lots of sweets and food, locks on the outside and inside, bombproof walls, shackles so you never have to worry about tripping up and hurting yourself. Plus it is in England so there is pretty much no natural disasters.

I think rural England or Wales is pretty safe. Unless we are targetted by nuclear warheads for some reason. Though you could say that about anywhere.

No natural disasters, very boring weather patterns, no dangerous animals, and in the countryside, very low crime-rates.

Isn't that the definition of safe?

In that case, Australia. We're sitting in the middle of a tectonic plate, we've extremely low chance of volcanic activity, and we're a fair ways from anywhere much. We do have some flooding problems in some places right now, and the northern end get the occasional cyclone, but there's a hell of a lot of Australia to choose from, so you can easily avoid those areas. Head inland right to the centre and about all you need to worry about is food and water .

Also, in the event of a zombie apocalypse, you'd pretty much be golden if you get out of the cities and go bush. If you only count the contigious states, AUs is a similair size to the USA, and we've got around a tenth of the population, so there's plenty of places to hole up. In the event of a nuclear or biological apocalypse, much the same goes (as long as you get out before things go to hell).

At some point in the future our vast quantities of land and resources may start looking rather tasty to some of our neighbours with increasingly dense populations, but that's a long way off yet (and would likely require some major destabilisation).

I thought there were rabid Koala bears there because someone was spraying mayonnaise all over the eucalyptus trees.

And kangaroo problems.

You'd just get abducted by crop-circle making humans in their string and cardboard crop crushers.

The Okanagan area, in British Columbia (Canada). In the middle of the province, no earthquakes, no ocean, no nothing. Except forest fires. But those are easy to outrun if you know they're comin'. Also, no country would waste a nuke on it, but its nice.

Somewhere in Australia or South America. Rich in resources, large tracts of isolated land, reasonably safe from natural disaster, and unlikely to be a major target in a nuclear war.

At this point, I'd say England or southern Ireland is looking pretty good at this point...
