I saw a woman lifting weights at the gym today...

Maybe the OP stepped inside a gym and was surprised that TV and movies are wrong.

Well, we see someone with a MLP avatar come in and ask us whether we think it's weird to see a woman lifting weights.

My sarcastic answer would be: "No weirder than a guy watching a TV show made for little girls" (and remember, I'm a brony myself).

But my real answer would be that it is culture that predominantly shapes our conceptions about what is and is not male / female "responsibility". There is nothing weird about a woman lifting weights aside from what the culture tries to ram down our throats about what is "male stuff" and what is "female stuff". Typical stereotypes.

There has been three remarks already so I think it's safe to say that we're well aware of the irony and cognitive dissonance.

Most of the nurses at the hospital I work at go to the gym. My aunt does Zumba Fitness (whatever that is).

I... well, little topic starter, one day you will go out in the wider world. Take a notebook. Apparently a lot of things will surprise or amaze you. For example, did you know women got the vote like a hundred years ago. And... we drive 'n stuff? And some of us are the primary breadwinners in households. Some even *gasp* like sports! Get out! Shocking, amirite? Oh, and sometimes we're wicked sarcastic too.

Honestly, there isn't a lot of discussion going on here. And I don't think the professed surprise at seeing a woman lifting weight in a gym, which is neither surprising or unusual regardless of the region of the country you live in, is much of a a useful discussion point for gender equality.
