I saw a woman lifting weights at the gym today...

Post » Tue Nov 19, 2013 5:51 pm

I had to take a double take really... I just don't see this that often where I live, and quite honestly, it is very strange to me. I grew up in the south, where women are women, and men are men. I just don't see why a woman would really want to gain muscle mass in the first place :\ This is just my opinion though...

What do you think about women who tries to assume male responsibilities and activities? Like I said from my example, I just find it weird.

Since when is being physically fit only for men?

I see plenty of women using weights in the gym, just that they tend to favor the high reps low weight routine usually.

I believe he is referring to the really muscular ripped look, which most tend to associate with men, rather than being physically fit where a person is healthy and slim.

The amount of weight and the number of reps determine whether you get toned or bulked.

Gheart, why are you using your alt account to post this...?

Anyway, I don't see how it is odd. Being on the throws squad in Track back in HS, I have had female team mates pump iron in the weight room so it is nothing new to me.

You will or won't gain muscle mass depending on the way you lift, guys normally go for bigger weights and women for smaller weights and you gain muscle mass by doing high weight and low reps. Besides, I see women at the gym all the time although not normally lifting weights, either running on the treadmills or using one of the exercise machines.

It's less weird than grown-up men watching ponies; besides, fit women can be pretty attractive, assuming you're talking about women who aren't just trying to slim down.

Bodybuilding women on the other hand is a total turn-off for me, though. Do not want.

Anyway, as to why go for the muscle building, I dunno. I stick more to the even to muscle building routines, going for the 8-10 reps. But I'm not a woman, so I couldn't tell you why go for the high weight low rep muscle building routine.

Um, what does being Southern have to do with it? I'm from Memphis and live right outside it and I don't find it odd for women to lift weights. A lot of women lift weights to get a more toned upper body work out. You don't see women lifting rigidly like men do, but they lift weights and have weights in stores designed to appeal to women here.

Not really, this forum is relatively well behaved and civilised. Most of the time.

My head is still spinning from the cognitive dissonance.

And as for the question "What do you think about women who tries to assume male responsibilities and activities?" I don't find it weird at all. In fact, I'd say it is a bit offensive to assume that there are male or female designated responsibilities or activities, outside of pure biological restrictions, because culture says so.

Oh, the irony.

I'm guessing she was just trying to get toned?

Frankly, I never really thought the ripply-gynormous bodybuilder look is normal for men, either, so a super-muscular woman isn't all that different to me. I just think "Wow, s/he must really like to distort her/his body. Whatever makes them happy, I guess."

I'm not even going to touch that last part. Further than I already have.

That's funny, because I saw a woman put some down.

Btw, what is this supposed to be about? Women going to the gym has been a thing since the '70s. Maybe even longer.

No one has actually answered the actual question in the thread: "What do you think about women who tries to assume male responsibilities and activities? Like I said from my example, I just find it weird."

I think the OP was living in a 1953 time warp and was shocked to step out to see women actually leave the house. :spotted owl:

@Eringho- Because most of this forum is forward thinking and doesn't see things as 'male' or 'female' roles.

I was just responding to mirglof, who wondered what this was about. OP has provided us with a question, and it's our job to totally crush his backwards beliefs because that's what we do here, right? Right.

Speaking only for myself, I feel like the OP is trying to get a rise out of people.

Maybe I'm just crazy-paranoid and find it strange that not everyone's mindset belongs in this century, which means I need to get out more?
