New horse. Shadowmere died on me after I rode him off a cliff to see if he'd revive.

He does, in the black goo pond you find him in I think...

No the funny part was I did that right after I got him so I had to walk to the objective for the DB urgent mission. I'm still surprised I made it in time.

There is no time constraint in Skyrim. NPC's might tell you to hurry but in actual game mechanics it means nothing. You could have crawled and still gotten there in time.
