Should Skyrim have a map more like Oblivion's?

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:54 pm

Am I the only person who feels that the 'map' in Skyrim is pretty useless for navigating? I liked having a proper map in Oblivion, where I could see roads and things like that, and plan how to get somewhere with relative ease.

The times I feel it the worst is going somewhere up a mountain, because it's hard if not impossible to see on the map where the correct path up the mountain is, and I spend ages just circling the mountain looking for the way up. (Unless I'm missing some map option and just look stupid saying all of this  )

The map in Skyrim is cool, and is quite useful for seeing where things like mountain's are, but maybe have the option to switch to a more traditional map? I think I'd be less likely to give up and fast-travel everywhere if I could plan my journeys more.

I prefer Oblivion's because I felt like my character was actually using a map. No biggy, though! :)

The map in Oblivion was more detailed, it had roads! The only thing Skyrim did better was the fact you could *slightly* rotate it and you could see mountains and cliffs so that comes in handy when venturing into the Reach. Other than that, I prefer the simpler 2d map.

I would like a map with roads. I use fast travel mainly because idk where the heck I am going most of the time or how to get to my destination.

It did, moving on the Oblivion map was annoying

They made the map the way it is because they wanted the player to clearly see the terrain of Skyrim (mainly the mountains).

Yes I much preferred Oblivions. At least you could see the main roads in Oblivion. Don't know what the hell they were thinking with Skyrim's map.

My only issue with the Oblivion map (and it hasn't really been dealt with in Skyrim either) is that because you couldn't zoom out entirely, I could spend a few minutes just searching the map for something.

I do think that in Oblivion it felt like your character had a map which they looked at when they needed it, which for immersion made much more sense, whilst in Skyrim, although it's treated in-game like a map (for example, people offering to mark things on it), it makes no sense realistically, it pulls you out of the game, rather than being a part of the game (if you get what I mean?)

I like real maps and not 3D interactive bullcrap, as the 3D is hard to navigate through and is generally a really low quality mess.
So I miss Oblivions map too.

Definitely. I don't like the RTS-ish view for Skyrim's map. It's clunky and difficult to use compared to Oblivion's, and while I do like that it shows landmarks, there are often clouds covering much of it, and it doesn't show any roads. And when you look at how many locations Skyrim has compared to Oblivion, it ends up being really cluttered when you have a high level character with a lot of places discovered. The camera rotation also makes it difficult to find a point of reference in a screenshot if you're looking for something you haven't found yet.

I like both maps, but prefer the simplicity of the Oblivion map because it's actually a map my character uses.

The number one thing I hate about the Skyrim map is clouds. I can often tell the types of situations I'll deal with based on geography in Skyrim, which is its best feature. Then the clouds... zey mock mein endeavor.

Feels completely out of place with Skyrim's setting as well I think. You want a hand drawn map like the one that came with the game as a poster..

The map is the one true disappointment I have with the game. Not only does the map have very little in terms of road layout, but half the time, my map seems to be covered in gorram clouds.

Despite over 200+ hours in this game, I still haven't managed to find any decent shortcuts over mountains, so I'm hoofing it on the roads 90% of the time.

I thought the paper map that came with the game had roads, but it turns out they were only Hold boundaries.

However, I still have it hanging on my wall for a quick visual.

I can't stand Skyrim's world map. Sure, it's pretty, but I don't like having to constantly scroll all over just to find a location. I'd love to have a simple, top-down world map like Oblivion/Morrowind, especially if the whole map fits on the screen (and there's no reason it shouldn't). A list that could be brought up for quickly searching locations to fast travel to would be really handy too.

i once killed a dragon in the mountains by the steed stone, and before i could loot its body it started rolling down the cliff. so i decided to check my map and get back on track to whatever it was i was doing, and i saw this glowing dot, so i zoomed in on it and realized that was right where the dragons corpse shoulda been. thats when it hit me... this is no map, its a daedras eye view of skyrim

The one thing I'll really miss from playing on the PC will be the mod that added roads to the map.

However, they could have made the paper map that came with the game an actual resource. I had this great map for Fallout 3 that came with a strategy guide, and I used it endlessly. Skyrim should have shipped with a detailed one of those.

Just again, makes me wonder why they made the map this way? In a game that's supposed to have a big focus on immersion, it doesn't really make any sense to me.

I'd prefer a map that looks like what my character would be seeing if they were using one.
It would have been nice if you could switch between the Skyrim map and one that looked like it was on paper.

I wouldn't even mind if the 'paper' map was an in-game object you could buy as opposed to the menu-map, but it would be nice if it was there.

Right, weather? wtf my little dova is omiscient at level one, standing in Riverwood I can tell you if picnicing in the Rift that day is a good idea..

I don't understand why they would go to the trouble of making this 3d monstrosity and then not allow the user to rotate the damned thing. (?) More often than not rotating and zooming turn out to be more frustrating than helpful if you're actually trying to use the 3d characteristics to plan a route through a pass or up a mountainside.

Like most of the interface, its nice to look at for 20minutes, but when you're really trying to play the game it just makes things more difficult.
