Similar games to Skyrim?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 4:14 am

Is there anything out a bit like Skyrim that I can start playing once I'm done with this game? I already played Oblivion and loved that. What else is there outside of TES?
By the way I should note that I am not looking forward to FFXIII-2. Since the first FF13 svcked so bad.

Choose your character. Choice of first and third person. Open world. Lots of action with rpg elements.
The second point, you will be lucky. If you don't mind being given a character, the Gothic series. You could do worse than Divinity : Dragon Knight Saga.

I heard from people over at the Fallout-forums that Fallout 3 is quite a lot like Skyrim; the focus is on exploration, but in a different setting.

Fallout 3 and Fallout NV are very similar in gameplay and design, although in a completely different timeline and place. Other than that, I haven't found any RPGs that come close to TES' and Fallout's principles of free, wide-range exploration and exciting gameplay.

Similar as in open word: Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas

Similar in setting: Dragon Age Origins, The Witcher series

Agreed.

If you're on PC I'd also consider checking out the Mount and Blade titles, which often come up on special offer on Steam every so often. Not as polished as the TES games but completely sandbox-style and the combat is very solid and satisfying.

for a few bucks you can get 2worlds1 (and 2.) open world rpg action adventure. lots of quests, fighting, and it has some features that kick the scrolls' butt (horse system and combat, for example.) unpolished, but, you can become whomever you want and can die right out of the gate. huge with lots of quests.

the voice acting is hilarious, not, terrible, imo.

as well, the game has lots of unique qualities and quirks that you won't find in other games.

Try Divinity II - The Dragon Knight Saga. While it is not exactly the same kind of game (it is mostly open world, but some areas are only available after some point in the story and the expansion is in closed areas), it may prove a nice experience and I think it should be cheap on Steam by now.

Gothic series are also open world, Ghotic 3 was ridden with bugs (Skyrim looks shinning clean in comparison), but now with all the updates and fan patches it should be stable. It's also cheap.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are nothing like Skyrim. They are another setting, other style of play, but they are AMAZING games. Fallout New Vegas has so many possibilities in terms of quests, decisions and the crafting system is interesting too. Both games can claim even more hours of entertainment than Skyrim.

Easily Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I'm honestly only playing Skyrim because I'm a huge FO3 fan, and it should be noted Bethesda made Fallout 3 prior to Skyrim. You'd see the similarities. A lot of people say this and I agree, Fallout 3 is pretty much a "modern" TES, or TES with guns.

Red Dead Redemption

minus the character creation and rpg bits.. i dunno what it is. there's just something about the spirit of both games that feels similar to me.

You know what's actually worse than the dialogue?

The rest of the game.

No, j/k.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas have a very similar gameplay. They're basically Oblivions with guns and it works very well.

The demo of Kingdom of Amalur is out there if you want to try it. I found there were too much invisible walls in my taste, but hey, Ken Rolston is on board. Fable is not an option unless you'd like to perform meaningless and narrow interactions in an ugly walled garden. Oh actually, it's not open world at all.

So if you haven't tried them yet, you should buy Fallout 3 or New Vegas, with a strong recommendation to prefer New Vegas who is better in every aspect, save the technical one, obviously.

two worlds 2 has some decent bits.
divinity is kewl but creatures don't respawn so you have to stay the level the game wants you to.
fallout 3 and NV, like everyone has been saying, plays like the elder scroll games - just with guns
dark souls is an rpg that lets you create a character and free roam, but it's crazy hard
in a few months Dragon's Dogma is coming out, it looks pretty fun

Edit: Fallout 3 is way better than NV in pretty much every single aspect except NV has a better shooting/crafting system

anyone that says the dialogue in 2worlds was in any way a negative doesn't appreciate humor in games.

it was some funny stuff. about time a game had that type of classic talk. reminded me of the classic movies/novel-speak that we never get in games.

besides, i love how people gloss over the fact that 2worlds1 dominates the elderscrolls in a few areas.

First-person RPGs aren't really the norm anymore. In the rise of the CRPG, developers were trying to pin down the right system and format for RPG gaming. There were a lot more games with that style of gameplay. You can head to GoG and check out the RPG section. You'll see quite a few first-person RPGs. The Might and Magic series remains my favorite. A lot of the popular designers just couldn't make the transition to 3D gaming, so the classics never really made it into the world of modern graphics.

RPG development split into two segments. First, there were the teams saw the success of MMOs like Everquest and Ultima Online and wanted to capitalize on the new market. A lot of time went into making MMOs and many of those never saw the light of day. I always get a little ticked when I think of the RPGs that could have been made had developers simply realized they didn't have the budget to make a good MMO.

The other segment shifted to the action RPG or made their entry into the Realm of the Diablo Clone. These titles threw away the idea of the 40-hour character-centric game and embraced hack and slash.

That left very few companies actually making the kind of games you're looking for. First-person RPGs are few and far between. You can find a few action titles like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and Thief 1-2, but you're not going to find many dedicated RPGs. I remember loving Arx Fatalis. You might start there if you like a classic feel.

good point.

and, this is my wish: beth will chop off a block of their company and millions. and, give that start-up the directive to make a pure rpg game. sophisticated, depth, meaningful choices/ game reaction, etc.

THAT game doesn't need a lot of money. it needs rpg ideals.

Disagreed - that is a heavily instanced, lobby based cash shop game. Garbage Nexon game.
