Since today's patch ALL saves crash out on loading

Post » Sun Jan 16, 2011 3:10 am

Since Steam pushed the last 'fix' to me all saved games now crash when trying to load.

I have worked my way all the way from the crazy ghoul space launching to Tops twice today only to lose all progress as ten separate saves fail to load - this include manual saves, auto saves and quick saves.

Partly I am very annoyed that Bethseda have AGAIN released a broken product... if they were a car manufacturer with this track record they'd all be in jail and bankrupt by now... but somehow knowingly releasing a non-functioning product is OK if you are a software house.

Mostly I'm annoyed at myself for allowing my hope for a positive gaming experience to outweigh my memories of the pain Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion & Fallout 3 caused in their own days.

In future I'll stick with Bioware - I don't get any of this pain from DragonAge or Mass Effect...

Some additional info for anyone who might want to look at the issue:

After my first run from rocket launch to Freeside crashed and would not load except from yesterdays save I did the following... walked about 50 yards down the corridor, saved again. This is the only save since the patch that will load.

I then exited the bunker via the ladder and saved again - that save and all subsequent saves will not load. There were no changes in my equipment, stats or any other player controlled settings between the two saves (it is possible I may have crouched down...) I just exited one area and saved pretty much immediately after.

Anyway filing this game on the naughty coding shelf until I hear some news.

My guess is they didn't play between patch release and today so it appeared to be released today to them.

Since Steam pushed the last 'fix' to me all saved games now crash when trying to load... Partly I am very annoyed that Bethseda have AGAIN released a broken product... if they were a car manufacturer with this track record they'd all be in jail and bankrupt by now... but somehow knowingly releasing a non-functioning product is OK if you are a software house.

I agree.
Me too - I started on Oct. 19 (opening day) and only worked my way to Level7 almost 8, but at some point none of my original savegames work anymore, they crash.
Wouldn't it be nice if they fixed it up BEFORE selling it? Heheh...
I haven't played for days now, waiting to see what they're going to come up with, but so far it's going in the wrong bloody direction for me!

I've played for the last couple of days with minor bugging issues (Clipping & random crashing). This morning I fire it up and play for a bit, then take a break and start it back up and i can't get any of my saves to load. Went and got the new ATI patch, no luck. All the permissions on my saves are good.

Seriously Bethesda this is some grade A commie BS! Please Bethesda test your games! Please!

Pretty much, I installed yesterday but Steam only patched the game when I fired it up today.

Not wanting to revel in others having the same problem, but at least if it is affecting a few of us we are more likely to see a fix!

+1, I've been playing most of the day, and I haven't noticed a new patch? Will it be released later in Europe? Can't imagine that..

This [censored] just happened to me to just now, but its just the last 5 saves or so that dont work. If i try to load a game some hours back it works but thats just so frustrating to be forced to play through all that crap again especially if you dont know if this is going to happen again. My game crashes all the time, when this happened it crashed in the middle of a autosave, but that should in my logic only [censored] up the autosave but for some reason i can load saves that are a bit older (i have 97 save games)

There is NOTHING in a game that is more important to be stable then the save system. To lose progress or your saves is the most frustrating thing that can happen when you play a game.

After the first day of playing with Steam "on line" and temporary loosing my 6 hours of playing I did the 'delete quicksave and auto-save' thing and got my 6 hours of saves back.
Since that fix I turned Steam to the offline setting and use manual saves ONLY. So far I've managed to make it up to level 12 with all of my MANUAL SAVES working fine.

I did notice that whenever I start my computer Steam wants to get back On-Line but until they fix this da#n thing I'm not letting them touch my game. In fact, because I see no reason to play with Steam looking over my shoulder I may never allow it to talk to its site on the web.

Having exact same problem!!! After patch any save after the Ghoul rocket launch crash the game (quest come fly with me)....I was able to load before that, do the quest and again the saves would fail from that play......I'm trying again where I saved right before I hit the launch and. Then quit and loaded and this save loaded. Then I initiate launch save, quit then load and now it's working. This is the first I've gotten a save to work after that quest and I didn't do Anything but save and then load the save without quitting the game....not sure what this means but it needs to be fixed!!!!

I am having this issue as well and its absolutely enraging. Up until 2 days ago it was fine...then I died and upon loading my auto save, the game CTD. I was able to restart and load an older, manual save. Now yesterday, since the new patch it seems, all of my saves cause CTD when i try to load them.

I am so frustrated and am really regretting buying the game at this point. Are the saves themselves bad or if they eventually fix this will i be able to just continue playing? Also if anyone has any advice on fixes that have worked for them, feel free to pm or email me.

Thanks in advance.

Having exact same issue. Fallout was always my favorite series but now its at the bottom of my list. If they dont release a patch, and soon that allows me to use my most current game saves im dont with Bethesda for good. Im not going to wase my time playing for hours on end just to have the saves become corrupted again. Good bye Bethesda, wish i could say it was nice knowing you.

Seems like it's happening after sending the ghouls into space with a couple of us - can anyone else confirm if they started having their problem after/during this quest line?

Could be that it is specific to something picked ujp or done in this quest - which would at least point the bug fixers in the right direction...

Yes, every save game that I have after the rocket launch will not load. I have at least 10 or so manual saves after that point in different locations. This svcks.

There is NOTHING in a game that is more important to be stable then the save system. To lose progress or your saves is the most frustrating thing that can happen when you play a game.

I've been having the same problem since yesterday after about four O'clock when i saved the game (with a regular save, which worked) and when i came home to try the autosave and the quicksave that I had, they were usable, but as soon as I was in game, and got to a part where I lost Ed-e (poor guy, he just goes down so easily XD), and then tried to quickload (this was the first time i tried it since i got home) the game instantly froze. Upon loading it, the only save which would work was the old regular save I had before the 1 hour and 50 some minutes of gameplay. At that point, I was able to get the quicksaves and autosaves to work again, but not the most recent versions. I went into C:\Users\DaBeast\My_Documents\My_Games\FalloutNV\Saves (obviously change the username to whatever yours is, and you'll have to adjust the save directory based on which version of windows your running - im on 7 ultimate 64-bit) and changed the older versions of the auto and quick saves (labeled autosave.fos.bak and quicksave.fos.bak respectively) to the main autosaves by renaming them quicksave.fos and autosave.fos (removing the .bak, which is the temp file of the second to last quick and autosave fallout keeps while your playing). However, this only worked the first time I did it, and since then all of my saves, regardless of whether they were quick, auto, or regular, have not been working, even when I've messed around with the temp secondary saves kept by Fallout and tried to force the game to reuse the new saves as old temp saves by renaming them... in other words, there is a way to save however far you have gotten thus far, and be sure that it works, but after that there is nothing, at least for me, that I was able to do to get any farther in the game unless you want to mow the living hell out of it, make a dump file via windows task manager, and reload the game from the dump file post update ROFL. (which by the way is an option, as I've tested and if you force fallout to freeze by loading any game after playing, and then opening task manager while window gives you the error message and making a dump file out of Fallout and reloading from the dump file, it will have all of the progress you had until it froze... of course if you are like me and want to beat it on hardcoe mode, you are going to be doing this a lot as there are a number of spots companions can die easily, or you can die easily for that matter, depending on what level you are and where you are in the game)

And FYI i also had my problems while going through the quest for sending the ghouls into space... the spot where mine ended up hanging up was when i was just going into the last area where the jail cells are (after having done the entire basemant area beside the jail cells) i saved it just before going in, and when Ed-E got killed by the nightkin jailer, i tapped the quickload button, only to find that it wouldn't work. That was when i got it to work via editing the quick and auto saves, but a little while later, when i was out in the ruins to the East grabbing the i239 rocket fuel off the body, I then saw Ed-E off fighting a golden lizard, proceeded to mutter to myself "oh for the love of all things holy..." tapped the quicksave button knowing he wasnt going to be saved from where i was, and found my Fallout saves (well the ones with the last 2 and a half hours of gameplay anyway) utterly broken.

can anyone else confirm if they started having their problem after/during this quest line?

I can.

I had this issue a couple of days ago, loaded from a save 2 hours prior, did it again, only to have the same results. I have 12 save games now, only half of which work >.<

So, I loaded a save that works, then every 5 mins or so I would save then load to see if it crashes. Based on this, it seems the errors start happening after you've talked to the bright glowing ghoul, telling him the way is clear. After all the ghouls run to the basemant, saves go splat. I had saved/loaded successfully JUST before talking to him, then immediately after I save/loaded and CRASH. Loaded an older save and tried it again, with the same results, so sending the ghouls to the basemant seems to be THE breaking point.

At least you guys have gotten to play the game. I cannot play for more than a minute without a CTD. If im lucky, it will CTD so badly if i try to restart the game, it will fail to detect a graphics renderer for the gamebryo engine (or some such nonsense), and requires a full restart.

For whatever reason all of mine also work right before telling the Bright Glowing ghoul about the path being clear, except for saves made right in front of the door to the jail (at least when the Nightkin jailer is alive in front of it)... further down the hallway is fine, and the rest of the basemant seems to be fine, but any save that was loaded with me being able to interact with the door as soon a the save was loaded would not work... dunno if thats a random fluke of my game or not. I would guess not as I had not had (the new) Fallout freeze for anything before those specific saves in front of that door, but all things are possible in the land of binary -.-

OK - So I have loaded the save from just before going and finding stuff for the launch - abandoned the poor ghouls and played on from there. I have only tried one save-quit-load so far but it has worked so that quest is looking like the problem so far.
