Skyrim or kingdom of amalur?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 11:30 pm

I've been following the issues of skyrim for quite some time now, I really like the game but it's a shame that it has so many problems. Luckly I waited and didn't get it when it just came out. Recently I tried the demo of kingdom of amalur and I was really impressed by it, it's not as good as skyrim but pretty close in my opinion. I know that patch 1.4 came out for skyrim and I've seen mixed reviews on the forum about it. I was planning to get a used version of skyrim once the issues (especially the lag and crashes) are fixed, but now I'm not getting a concrete answer whether the bugs are fixed or not and I'm torn between getting skyrim or kingdom of amalur. So I want to ask those who have games already, are the issues of skyrim really fixed after 1.4? Which game should I get? Skyrim or KoA?

I would honestly pick up Skyrim over Kingdoms of Amalur. I personally have only experience few issues with my game and I purchased it the day it came out. I've been using the same gamesave ever since and never have lagged. The only problem I have had is a few long loading screens and two freezes which were recently but I am not exactly sure that Skyrim is what caused it, it may be my console.

But yeah, I say Skyrim.

imho no patch is going to fix the real problems with skyrim:

1. poorly developed main quest lines
2. empty npc interaction
3. lack of political alliances and such
4. stupid magic
5. horribly inept interface that takes away from gameplay
6. character progression

that said, KoA suffers also.

1. cartoony
2. not as open
3. even less well developed economy
4. the world is less intricate

there are probably more but in my opinion both games were dissapointing, although I found KoA a bit less so. I think that is primarily because I expected less from KoA.

normally I would say wait for skyrim Goty edition but EA has pulled day one dlc for KoA in my opinion get skyrim because unlike EA bethesda dlc's are worth it but then again KoA is properly optimized for ps3 and has a better chance of being worth it and not having bugs and glitches

I have 120 hrs in Skyrim and 25 hrs in KOA and KOA is just a much better game all around. Not buggy, better story, much better side quests, better main quest, combat is so much better.

Skyrim is so shallow and repetitive, most of the game feel cold and scripted and the even the main quest is as shallow as your average radiant AI fetch quest.

Skyrim is like a vast ocean that is 3 inches deep the whole way though.

SKyrim by a longshot. The bugs are there but are not as game breaking as some would lead you too believe, unless your on the PS3. Sure like any Bethesda game there is the occasional bug that screwsyou over to the point of having to load a previous save but in my 200+ hours I have yet to experience one. Skyrim is a amazing game while KOA is on of those good games on the cusp of being great.

Better story really? R.A. Salvatore and the writers there came up with a mediocre and generic fantasy story. Now Skyrim's isn't amazing either but that's not the main focus of the game. Your story is your own to make.Side quest shouldn't be in question here. Until I played KOA Reckoning I never appreciated the talent behind Bethesda's quests as I always thought of them as slightly above average but nothing great.KOA has extremely dull quest backed-up by a boring world and characters that are no better than Skyrim's. Combat is one thing I can agree on along with some of the RPG mechanics. KOA does them well but they do not make up for all the faults.

So I say go with Skyrim and wait on KOA Reckoning.

Where are you getting that from? That never happened.
EDIT: Unless I am misunderstanding what you are saying. You could be a bit clearer. Care to elucidate?

I plan on getting KoA during a sale. The aesthetic reminds me a lot of Fable and it doesn't seem overly simple.

They're very different games, both good in their own ways.

I see Kingdoms of Amalur more as a Diablo- or Sacred-style ARPG (action beat-em-up lootfest), but with more "RPG" aspects (like actual NPC conversations, instead of "oh, you can get a sidequest from one NPC in Camp A, and a default line from the rest"), and a different view angle.

re: problems with Skyrim..... depends on the version, of course. You don't say what platform you're talking about, but the comment about crashes and lag suggests that it might be PS3. In which case - sorry, don't know if they fixed that yet. Perhaps check on the PS3 technical forum?

Reckoning is better as an RPG but Skyrim might be better as a game overall.

I will say this about Reckoning, it's 100% more stable then Skyrim, in my 107 hours of gameplay with Reckoning, I only had 2 freezes and both those freezes were my fault I could've prevented them from happening. In comparasion to Skyrim, in my around 350 hours of playing Skyrim (Unpatched, Installed 360) I had 13 freezes and 2 minor quest progression issues and a quest progression issue at the end of the Thieves Guild with Brynalof. I was able to get around the minors but not the Thieves Guild one although that bug is easy to play around so I won't have it again if I get back to that point.

If you don't want to deal with bug problems that Skyrim still possibly has then Reckoning will probably be the pick. I'd techincally get both although I'd wait for Skyrim's eventual GOTY edition, I wish I would've done that with New Vegas, the game plays so much better on the Ultimate edition after it was fixed then when it 1st came out.

Spent about 700 hrs on Skyrim so far and still love it even with it`s flaws.
Spent 1hr on the demo of KOA and couldn`t stand it. I`m biased...Skyrim>KOA.

If your on a console, there`s also The Witcher 2 coming out in April (Excellent RPG) and Dragons Dogma in May, which looks pretty interesting.

Judging by what i've heard of KOA i would be picking Skyrim up straight away.

Skyrim is a game-world to love and explore.
KoA is a fun hack & slash RPG.

Darksouls...

Way more fun then Both KoA and Skyrim. I can't believe how much fun I have had with this game. Every time I see a picture of a place that I have already gone through I get that "wow I hated that place at first, but I feel like a BA since I got through it" feeling. And that my friend is a feeling that should be in every game.

Meh, with both Demon's and Dark Souls i seemed to get disinterested at about the 20 hour mark. Though i think weapons, armour and combat are fantastic, way ahead of Skyrim.

So kingdom of amalur doesn't have bugs? It probably has just as many as Skyrim. Dark Souls has got as many bugs as Skyrim, but no-one talks about those, as seen from Septim007's post above ;)

Skyrim all the way. The thing about KoA, for me, is that most side quests are about as interesting as an MMO quest(one is literally "kill 3 X, 3 Y, and 8 Z"). The main quest and most "guild" quests can be interesting, but the rest of the content gets pretty boring after Webwood or so.

The main advantage that KoA has over Skyrim is combat, which is great fun, but can only take the game so far. It's a very fun combat system, but because of the way they give you new abilities it does get kind of repetitive once you hit level 20 or so, though.

You can probably squeeze 40-80 hours or so out of KoA, but I'm not sure you'd WANT to do that(I'm hitting a wall at around 30 hours myself, and am basically trying to get through it ASAP). It's one of those games that looks AMAZING when you start out, but the more you play the more you realize what weird decisions the devs made(like 75k+ repair bills from a blacksmith, while repair kits only cost 611 gold; or the way they made areas lock into your level when you enter them so you're obligated to finish EVERY QUEST before leaving unless you want to ROFLSTOMP everything). Skyrim, however, can easily be stretched out for 150+ hours without things getting boring, and while it's not perfect the flaws that it has are fairly obvious.

I haven't had any bug issues with Dark Souls at all. The only thing is when there is a big group of enemies it tends to lag a bit, but that is all I have encountered.

If we're talking PC, I'd say go with KoA. KoA is currently at it's most fun. Skyrim will get waaay better in several months, with all the mods and DLC and whatnot.

(note, we are speaking generally about games and bugs and why saying one game is terrible because it has bugs is quite ignorant, because the other game most likely has them too, but those aren't talked about, and this we aren't off-topic) :D

I've probably only encountered 5% of the so-called bugs Skyrim is supposed to have. Same thing with dark souls. That doesn't mean they don't have bugs. Dark Souls has you invade other players as a red phantom, when you put down your white co-op sign. Dark Souls has players invade you and be invisible to everyone else than the host. Dark Souls has glitches that let you can spells for free, buff unbuffable weapons, change the move-set of slow weapons to be dagger fast without losing damage, backstab opponents to death with a bow no matter how much health they have.. The list goes on and on and on. (as does Skyrim's list, but for some reason TES games bugs are always so much bigger than other games bugs.)

I'm with you on this. I logged in about 190 hrs. in Skyrim. So when you start playing KOA,the shallowness of Skyrim really comes out. KOA even though the graphics are not as good is a better all around RPG. Bethesda spends to much money on eye candy and less on the story. But thats what the public seems to want these days. And thats why Morrowind will always be the better TES game. I enjoyed Skyrim until i noticed how bad NPC reaction is. I finished the civil war and just about every quest line and none of them care what i did. They say the same thing as they did when i was lvl one. This is because all the money was spent on eye candy.

It depends on what your looking for. Skyrim has a vast open world with plenty to explore and lots of quests. KOA: Reckoning is a fairly big game though not open world. The area hubs are usually pretty big and allow some exploration. The factions have been the high point of the game thus far for me. Amalur game has loots of loot and an enjoyable combat system. The game can become to easy despite being on the hardest difficulty.

Personally despite how bored I am of Skyrim I would recommend it if your looking for a game to tide you over for a long period of time. KOA is a fun game if you pace yourself, don't do every sidequest, and join every guild on the first playthrough.

I thought I posted this in the ps3 section, this is why I didn't specify which platform I'm playing the games on.
So basically what I'm getting is that skyrim without the technical issues is a better game and have more game hours than KoA. But since I'm on the PS3, and that's where the worst of the issues happen (unbearable lag, constant freezing, broken quests, etc), I don't want to risk getting skyrim unless absolutely certain that all the issues are fixed or none of the remaining bugs are game breaking. And the reason that I like KoA is because of it's combat system, relatively large world, and the whole idea of the fate system that allow you to customize your character and change playstyle completely in mid game. Also I'm rather found of the fantasy MMORPG style graphics of the game.

One suggestion if you *do* go with KoA..... only take enough Smithing that you can repair your gear better (with repair kits). Don't max out Smithing to make your own gear. Why? Because there's all sorts of loot - between random-prefix&suffix stuff, uniques, and set items - and because I had high-level smithing and fancy Sagecrafted gems to make them with, I ended up using very little of the loot I found. My crafted stuff was just better. Which means that my gear was almost all "generic crafted" look, instead of trying all the different models they made for the "good" loot drops.

(But you still want some Smithing, just so you don't use as many repair kits. Which you do want to use - repair costs at high level get stupidly expensive.)
