Skyrim is WAY too hard?

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 8:28 am

Anyone else think Skyrim is way too hard?
I spend most of my time running away to heal myself
Will I level up till I can fight these enemies or will they be half-gods forever (that mage who lives in the hut on the mountain who can kill in about three hits.)
HELP!!

It will get better as you level up. When you start out, everything is a threat, but as you pick up better armor, weapons and spells, you'll be able to relax.

Some places require you to be a certain level. When you enter a cave/area/dungeon the enemies level to your level. So if you get whipped badly, go back after you level up and get payback. I have to turn around and return. Revenge is sweet. You can also change the difficulty level to make it a little easier.

Don't level non-combat skills too much at once, or you'll be grosely underpowered. For example, leveling 3x alchemy, 3x enchanting, 3x smithing and 3x lockpicking will level you up, but you gain 0 combat ability.... Try and spread it out and mix it.

Yep, once you perk yourself up and get some decent equipment, everything should start falling into place.

If you play like my girlfriend, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the difficulty slider.

Keep at it, you get better when I first started playing I struggled but as you play you just get better at the game hardly without noticing it, plus the leveling helps but mainly it's just you getting better

Play style and enemy type play into it somewhat. Some play types don't deal well with certain enemies while others steamroll em.

Slight spoiler

Anecdote. My first character was a two hander/heavy armor Orc. Steam rolled the Frost Troll on the way to High Hrothgar because I could simply do more damage per hit than the regen got back. Mage PC slightly more difficult only because of resource management and suitability but enough damage output from dual wield flames with perk to deal with it. Rogue style characters required A LOT of work and follower only because lack of early decent fire damage and light per hit one handed weapons.

With some builds it takes a while to get to a point of relatively easy survivability with a large number of encounters. But you get there eventually.

Way too hard? I'm playing on master and i still find it fairly easy and have not broken the game in any way.
I presume you are playing on novice right? If you find it hard it's the reasonable thing to do. I don't know how novice is like but a friend of mine plays who plays on apprentice just 1 hits everything. You must be doing something seriously wrong.

Up until level 50 I was playing on Apprentice and found the game to be pretty challenging. I was dying a lot, and no one who has seen me play would say I was doing something wrong. This game is a lot harder than Oblivion, it provides a challenge no matter what level you are.

So at the OP, it is not just you. The game was designed this way, you just need to adjust how you play for different encounters. I will fight a single Draug Overlord face on if need be, but I will never fight against two at the same time. I am level 55 now and I still run away from fights because they are too difficult. All part of what makes this game so much fun.

When you enter a dungeon for the first time (usually), everything in it levels to a specific range based on what your level is. Obviously any overlords in there will be a level or two higher, while standard draugs will be a few levels lower. So if you find a fight too difficult you can leave and come back after you've levelled up several times.
That does not work every time though. There are certain dungeons (like Labyrinthian I believe) which has a specific level requirement. And many of the Daedric quests have specific level requirements as well. You can get them whenever, but you will be fighting mobs preset to a specific level and so might find the fight almost impossible.

Not sure what game you're playing but if you level enchanting smithing and alchemy you'll be grossly overpowered no matter what other skills you take.

Thanks dude that clears up a lot. It is better not being invincible like on Oblivion

Depends on your level, and where you are. Saber Cats are the bane of the adventurer's existence lv. 8-10. A few levels later, you'll be killing them as easily as wolves, sometimes one-shotting them with criticals. You just need to stay in and around Whiterun until about lv.15, then the world opens up more fully. Not saying you can't realistically explore before that point, but that's when you need to stop worrying about literally everything killing you.

We've got people saying it's way too easy, and way to hard.

Sounds pretty balanced.

I agree about a follower. It makes the low-mid levels a lot easier. In the 30s I didn't need a follower.

I really have a hard time believing all of these "What, I play on Master and run around naked killing dragons with my bare fists" people. I'm playing a lvl 20 archer/sneak type, put my all perks into sneak and archery other than a couple in light armor, and playing on Adept is still a challenge. I can one-shot most bandits and whatnot, but then the boss-level ones typically kick my butt, bears are just a stupid shoot-and-run exercise, and blood dragons are insanely difficult to kill unless I have a lot of help. The near complete lack of magic items, shouts that disable opponents for less time than it takes me to re-equip my weapon, ridiculous AI behavior and random "you can't jump from here"/"oh look you fell through the floor" crap makes combat with major opponents frustrating at best.

But then I'm starting to think I should just uninstall this, between the continual frustration of leveled opponents and the idiotic quests I'm starting not to see the point of doing this any more. I had more fun on my last Oblivion play-through where I did almost nothing but third-party quest mods like The Ayleid Steps and The Lost Spires.

IDK, I played on master until about level 10, it was way too hard fighting with simple draugs, then i switched to hard and it's challenging but not frustrating

I find it to be pretty balanced to be honest. I play on Expert mostly but every now and then I will ragequit and turn it to Adept for a certain fight. I really like the challenge though.

EDIT: And yes the companions quests are doable at lower levels for sure.

Put the difficulty WAY too low?
By "mage n the mountain" do you mean that guy living in a house? He's quite strong.

The games hard when your level is really low or really high, since enemies level too. Its not as bad as oblivion where enemies just had a ton of health, but I level grinded a character up to around 55 and was getting one shotted by bandit arrows, and utterly [censored] by necromancers. After a little more than 100 hours of game play I'm more familiar with the perks and realize that theres allot of unnecessary perks (besides the obvious), for example the damage perks, the armor rating perks, and the smithing perks, since with a full enchanting tree you can make up for them.
