Slow Framerate Issues

i think its doing it. but everytime i alt tab out my cpu usage goes to like 1 percent for this game : /
If there is an option to force windowed mode you can do that and have the task manager set to always on top.

someone who has got the game, check your cpu usage in your resource monitor. I hope it's not like Oblivion where it maxes out one core and only utilizes like 10% of an additional at best. That would explain the poor FPS, at least.
It uses 40-50% of my i5 2500k 4.5Ghz, with most usage in Core 1 (but not maxed out), and the rest in Cores 2-4. This is during play in full-screen.

Doesn't look like anything is wrong with those swords, they look like the generic Iron swords that all TES games start you with, if it was Steel-Ebony then yes there is a problem, but it's just an Iron sword, they are always going to be ugly...I mean have you ever seen a sword from the Bronze or Iron age? ugly little weapons they are.

How smoothly does it run? Do you get choppy fps drops?

I personally dont really undertand all of my problems. First of all The Ui is a Complete dissapointment for me it isnt even a exremall hard thing to change the ui from xbox to pc instead of a direct port. for the running im hoping it gets a lot better. I can play MW3 max setings steady 60 - 70 FPS with no major lag other than the occasional spike. Skyrim im getting around 40 with a lot of lag spikes every now and then. I have a lot of hope that they cn fix but if not then its disturbes me that a large gamng company cnt fix something so easy and obviously a problem.

So last night I couldn't wait any longer and I broke my 'not until after exams' restriction and bought the game.

It's an absolute mess, it has been directly ported from console with ZERO optimisation for PC... none. I'm running an i7 2600k, gtx 580, 16gb dd3 ram and the graphics look like the texture packs for Morrowind, with 30-40 fps. On BF3, which has beautiful textures, I'm running between 40-60 with everything on ultra.
The UI is simply incompatible with mouse and keyboard. I shouldn't have to just 'use a 360 controller' because I bought this for PC for the very reason of using mouse and keyboard (with better graphics).
To my surprise, I had absolutely no problems prying myself away to head to university to study for my exam this arvo.

tl;dr, don't waste your money on the PC version. Wait until the modders come along to fix Bethesda's laziness again.

Sorry to break it to you..but unless you have early access to the PC game you are lying out your ass sir. It isn't unlocked yet. You haven't played it. Also if you are one of the people playing this that isn't a higher up you seriously have a broken game that has yet to be patched. I've seen pictures that put the ones people are posting to shame.

If you noticed, I said I 'bought' the game last night. I played it this morning before I went to uni, and posted this thread when I got there.

I've come across this set of images: http://imgur.com/a/62SFc

And my game looks nothing like this, even though my settings are on the highest, and my drivers are up to date. Have any PC users here had as much success as this guy?

I can say my game looks as good if not better than those screenshots. Post your specs and resolution? And also did you click options on the game launcher and manually set everything to Ultra? And one more question...which drivers are you using?

Look at those swords

They are basic iron swords, with a cheap hammered metal appearance, not sure what you were expecting, but its clear some people posting have not played earlier games in the series.

For good or bad, the appearance of these swords is more about a graphical style than a poor engine or textures, and that style has remained the same since the beginning, all the elder scrolls games take place in the same world where the rules and overall look have not changed to retain continuity. It may not be to everyone's taste but it's easy enough to change with the tes editor; however what you can expect to see improved are the vistas, wildlife, the environment, all creating the atmosphere of a living world.

***EDIT*** I suspect I know what is happening with some folks games. Head to the launcher and hit the advanced tab, and manually increase settings, seems in some cases the presets are not setting these values and they all remain at 0.

I thought the glass swords in Morrowind looked better than the glass sword on 2/3 game trailer.

As for my own screenshots, here are a few. I'm on Ultra @ 1080p. They got resized a bunch when uploaded though.

Gigabyte GTX 580 1.5gb, 16gb DDR3 G.Skill Ripjaws edition, i7 2600k, resolution 1920x1080. Nothing is overclocked. Drivers, I will have to check when I get home, but the game had automatically set it to ultra... although from what I have been reading, it seems you need to manually set EACH setting individually to max, is this true?
I only had about 45 minutes to play this morning, so I just saw the auto-setting was max and let it be, didn't have time to start tweaking.

What fps are you running at? I'm still trying to figure out why I was getting fps slowdowns. Perhaps there is a compatibility clash with nvidia drivers?

I have a i5 2500k, a SSD, 2 HD6950 1Gb cards and 8 gigs of RAM. Windows 7 64bit, Latest drivers and all that jazz.

Skyrim will not give me any more than 3-4fps on Ultra quality.

At first, every setting except 'Low' was unplayable and I was experiencing an almost unresponsive mouse sensitivity. After some troubleshooting, I realised my Catalyst Control Centre was overriding some in-game settings that I guess were conflicting, because after disabling my catalyst in-game overrides I can now run the game on 'high' with perfect frame rates.

However, 'Ultra' quality still runs at an absolute crawl. I have tried it with crossfire both enabled and disabled. I haven't tried the Disable V-Sync thing that people have mentioned yet (I'm at work), but I imagine that'd be a problem at High just as much as Ultra. I will try it later just in case.

Is this an issue with ATI, crossfire, or what? I come here in the hope of finding a solution as I don't think I can be the only one experiencing this. I'm happy enough playing on High for now but it's bugging me that I can't run ultra for some mysterious reason. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please share what you did to overcome it.

Edit - The difference between high and ultra, I should say, is evident from the very beginning. Even the 'Bethesda Softworks' logo stop-start-flickers into existence and the mouse in the title menu barely responds.

The exact same thing. There is literally no difference between one and two cards. Bizarre, huh?

Edit - I should say, I was troubleshooting at 3am and so hadn't the energy to test the draw distance sliders and AA options to see what the exact difference is between high and ultra that is the clincher. I will do this as soon as humanly possible tonight to try and find what the tipping point is. Or the nosedive point is, as it were.

Yeah, if you just click 'Ultra' out of the first options menu you still have to go into advanced and manually select Ultra for some options. I get about 50-60 FPS on max with a single EVGA GTX 580. Running the latest beta drivers, 285.79. Those have added Skyrim support.
