Slow Framerate Issues

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 10:53 am

So last night I couldn't wait any longer and I broke my 'not until after exams' restriction and bought the game.

It's an absolute mess, it has been directly ported from console with ZERO optimisation for PC... none. I'm running an i7 2600k, gtx 580, 16gb dd3 ram and the graphics look like the texture packs for Morrowind, with 30-40 fps. On BF3, which has beautiful textures, I'm running between 40-60 with everything on ultra.
The UI is simply incompatible with mouse and keyboard. I shouldn't have to just 'use a 360 controller' because I bought this for PC for the very reason of using mouse and keyboard (with better graphics).
To my surprise, I had absolutely no problems prying myself away to head to university to study for my exam this arvo.

tl;dr, don't waste your money on the PC version. Wait until the modders come along to fix Bethesda's laziness again.

It's not a FPS(shooter, I mean) game.
I've been playing Metro 2033 and some (tho not all) of the textures/stuff in it on DX11/max are awesome....but I never expected that sort of look for Skyrim. I'm not sure what people were expecting for PC Skyrim, really, considering the engine base & the type of game it is.

The UI type stuff...that's always an issue these days seems like. I'm hoping the keyboard/mouse controls will just feel odd for a while and then I'll get used to it/be no problem, like I have in other recent titles.

Edit: what kind of vid ram do you have on those GPU's? Just curious.

The card is 1.5gb, but I didn't run any tests to check usage or CPU usage etc. When I get home (much later tonight) I will post some screenies and data on usage.

Edit: I too wasn't expecting it to look like BF3, but my game looks nothing like the images and video I have seen. My drivers are up to date, so I don't know why everything looks so blocky..

You guys must have forgotten that they have a history of this on their releases. Something will get done, but it's never a completed game until mods come out. For the consoles I hope they fix it. I have both. I don't have PC yet till 9pm tonight on Thursday. I hope they both do fix these problems. Also, it is snowing inside the Windhelm buildings. I thought they said they fixed that.

omg that is far worse than oblivion.

the blade has no depth or detail to it it makes the elven longblade in oblivion look like a masterpiece.

Mods is our only hope now.

Anyone else get massive slow down in the intro its very noticeable. I have 2500k @ 3.3ghz, 560Ti 1gb, 8gb ram, 1.8 TB Raid 0 Samsung F3. Do I have to turn off shadows or something?

My comment wasn't about the FPS, just about the graphics. (FPS used to stand for first-person-shooter, so I edited my first post a bit, lol)
But I'd agree that I'd want to get 50-60fps from my hardware...which, if you see my sig, isn't super-fancy, but is at least "decent." ;)

I was mostly wondering if more Vram might help in this game re: fps. I'll see if my 3GB gets more steady fps than some are reporting.

six cores at 4ghz and a overclocked gtx480 and 8 gigs of ddr3 is more then enough to run this game. like i said i even tried to run this at low still same thing 45fps and yeah i see ur hardware its a nice build

Odd. i5 2500k here, HD 6970 and I run 60 FPS min with every single setting on max. I do use D3Doverrider and enable triple buffering..so that may be the difference. Try that.

someone who has got the game, check your cpu usage in your resource monitor. I hope it's not like Oblivion where it maxes out one core and only utilizes like 10% of an additional at best. That would explain the poor FPS, at least.

Mods can fix a lot, but if the game isn't optimized in the first place, even mods will have a limit.

I can wait for the community fixes, like New Vegas they were the real heroes. Probably why Bethesda favors mods.

I shall keep that in mind if I experience big dips when I get to play....which I can't quite yet. *cries* :)

Here is a few screenshots from oblivion taken right now with qarls texture pack and the lich king armor, ofcourse modders dont have a deadline so they have more time on their hands to create something like this.

You should be able to get an idea from the graphs...whether they're up higher just before it falls to that 1% when you alt-tab out.

If you get ATI Tray Tools you can run CPU/GPU usage display in game, so you can see it real time and see what is going on.

Course, you need an AMD/ATI card.
