lol. I was just talking this over with a bunch of friends.

-Glass is SUPPOSED to be "worse" than Daedric; it's light armor
-The light armor sub-tree has advanced smithing on it. I'd say this makes it the preferred tree for everyone, even heavy armor people.
-The light armor tree has less perks on it; you can get to Daedric faster by going up the light armor tree and wrapping around through Dragon and then you'll also have Advanced Smithing

The heavy armor tree is just plain a waste of perks unless you really need the improved heavies for leveling, and even then plate armor from the "light" sub-tree is going to be better for you than the mid-tier heavy armor is.

smithing seems like such a waste of perks/levels to me
On the contrary, smithing, alchemy, and enchanting seem REQUIRED to get your character decked out in the best possible gear. Smithing for improving your armor, enchanting for giving yourself buffs to your favored skills, and alchemy for boosting your smithing and enchanting farther than perks will let them go by using potions that buff those skills.

Yeah I noticed this too.. I don't know if it was a design oversight, or intentional... Definitly something that they need to remedy.. I think what they really should do is just combine the light-armor perks with the heavy-armor ones... Would free up a few perk slots for everyone and make progression a bit smoother..

But really, you should just focus on what is "end-game".. Which is Daedric weapons/armor and Dragon gear.. You'll spend much more time wearing those sets than anything else.. I made my Dragonplate already and I'm only level 30.

Anybody who thinks Smithing is a waste of perks/skills/time needs to wise up...

Something interesting I figured out... Stacking bonuses when enchanting/upgrading items at the forge..

Example:

Player Smithing level = 100
Consumable buff: Blacksmith Elixir (50% increase in "Smithing" for 30 seconds)
Equipped Items: Peerless Smithing Ring & Gloves (25% each)

Total = 100% increase in "Smithing"

End result?

Daedric Waraxe - 74 Daedric Battleaxe - 95
Daedric Mace - 77 Daedric Greatsword - 93
Daedric Sword - 72 Daedric Warhammer - 99
Daedric Dagger - 66

Daedric Bow - 83

Daedric Helmet - 108 Dragonplate Helmet - 106
Daedric Chest - 222 Dragonplate Chest - 214
Daedric Gloves - 96 Dragonplate Gloves - 94
Daedric Boots - 96 Dragonplate Boots - 94
Daedric Shield - 88 Dragonplate Shield - 84

Note: This is with 60 in all three weapon tree's, and 60% increased damage. Just to level the playing field so you don't get any screwy numbers. My Heavy Armor skill is around there, in the mid-low 50's I think

Still a waste? Combined with a high enchant level and 2 effects on each item? Like Knots said, Smithing, enchanting, and alchemy are literal requirements to making truly amazing gear... At the expense of your characters actual abilities. :(

TS keeps saying it's bad design
but from everything I've read it seams to make sense
it's called balance, can;t have best of both worlds, that's the whole point behind choice
so in order to get the best of everything (best armor best weapon)
you'd have to spend a lot of points
it's not like all other weapons are useless

Read the [censored] thread before you reply.

I don't think that's true. I upgraded a dwarven sword even though I don't have the dwarven smithing perk. I think you only need the perk to craft new items. You can always improve things you find.

Google 'skyrim smithing' click the first link and read so you actually understand how improving works.

Nevermind, thread is a waste of time. For every one reply from someone who actually gets it there's 10 from the helmet kids who make up the majority of the gene pool now. Maybe this will get noticed and patched, doubtful but one can hope. Bethesda doesn't exactly have a good track record for these sort of things.

So there are no Dragon weapons.. and Ebony and Daedric are both better than the Glass one.. despite Glass being the best you can make when specced into light armor smithing.

So i'm supposed to spend 5 perks in heavy armor smithing I don't want to get Daedric smithing just to build and improve a Daedric bow?

My options then are:

1) Ignore Light Armor smithing despite it being what I want and go up the Heavy tree because I have to anyway to get Daedric..
2) Go up the Light Armor side and the Heavy sides both and spend 5 perks on some [censored] I don't want or need..

Who's brilliant design idea was this? Why can't I go from Dragon to Daedric like the line connecting them on the skill tree would make you think? Or failing that.. why aren't glass weapons on par?

not sure if its the case, but are you saying they are better because of base dmg? if so, are you taking into account speeds?

The reverse.. you can go up the left (light) side to Dragon (best light armor) but if you want the best weapons in the game you have to go up the heavy armor side. Which basically is a laugh in the face of everyone going the a-typical stealth/assassin type with light armor.

You're either forced to take 5 extra perks you won't use.. or if you want to save the perks you have to use heavy armor..

Going light armor is stupid because heavy armor is better than light and you can craft the best weapons - daderic. The light/heavy armor perk tree is basicly the same except the 50% stamina regain for light but that isnt actualy worth it. Both trees when maxed make your armor weight 0 and they dont slow you down. They have a 50% noise reduction that coupled with the second perk in the left sneak tree makes you 100% noiseless.

You cannot do this.

He went up the left side (light armor) seriously how could you not understand this? He cant go from dragon -> Daedric, and both Daedric and Ebony (which are heavy) have better weapons than glass (light) which is quite annoying having to skill up heavy armor that you dont want to wear just for weapons.

Sorry, I haven't exactly studied every perk path in the game, jeeze, lighten up.

I was a little confused about how he went and couldn't remember what side Deadric was on.

You are specializing in light materials but want to work with heavy ones? You have 3 options

Stick to light
Stick to heavy
Do both

It's not hard.

...

So you're mad that the best light armor doesn't have as much defense as the best heavy armor?

Am I missing something?

There's only one real option, go heavy regardless, wear dragon scale if you want to wear light armor but no matter what you're going to want Daedric or Ebony weapons over glass no contest.

It's alright buddy! You can go to the Midden, underneath the College of Winterhold, where you will find a daedric summoner. You can use this to summon daedric armor and weapons from oblivion. If you're interested read about it on UESP

I'm good with my Shrouded Armor thank you very much, I only put 2 perk skills in Smithing; Steel Smithing and Arcane Blacksmith.

By the way, have you guys considered putting the Heavy Armor and Light Armor Skill trees in the equation?

Problem is that he will not be able to improve it without the Daedric perk.
