Something "common" you never learned

Post » Fri Mar 15, 2013 2:59 pm

I'm surprised, I always thought that riding a bike and swimming were pretty common. It's hard to think of a common thing I don't know how to do, probably because I can't do it so I've ignored it. I'll get back to you.

huh, maybe my theory is wrong? It probably is  I live in Florida and I learned to swim in a bathtub.
I live on the Norwegian coast, so I don't have any excuse not learning to swim properly. No wait, I do! It's [censored] cold.

never learned how to drive a car with a manual transmission ( I know how to, I just never had to drive one so I never got any practise)
I think I've only seen an automatic like once in my life. They're not common around here, at least. Are they very common in America?

I don't know how to do that fancy card shuffling thing where you bridge two halves of the deck. My dad said he knew how to do that since he was 7.
I didn't learn to do that until I was in my late teens. I was envious of people who could...finally some friends showed me how. Still took me a lot of practice for it be "easy" to do, tho.

I think swimming isn't as common as people make it out to be, sure if you live on/ near a coast it's somewhat natural, but in any sort of mainland/artic like place, swimming is just something the tropical people do in their humid, hot, dusty places :D
Swimming pools at schools, sports/youth/social centers are often (but not always) available even so. Some may even be indoor and heated.

Automatic transmission in automobiles is very common in the US. Especially the past decade or so when the gas mileage difference has become more minimal. Manual is seen as more of a "sporty" car thing.

I am a horrible swimmer.

Same. I can float. I'm like a snail when I'm in water...

I can't do that either!

I guess that makes up for being able to swim and ride a bike.

I can't whistle. I was able to do the finger whistle once and I freaked myself out and I haven't been able to do it again since.

Ah, I see. I've been driving manual cars all my life, so have no idea how to operate an automatic one. I really want to try it sometime, though.

It's a surprise when you see a manual car in the US.

It's like "Oh, you drive stick? That's cool."
That sounds so alien to me. :bonk:

Driving an automatic is literally just step on gas and go.

Pretty much. Keeps one hand free and you don't use both feet, either.

I've always preferred a manual, tho. All my non-sporty cars that I've owned are manual. Keeps me more focused on driving/awake. You can still get manual on most cars I think, but often you have to order them vs. drive off the lot with it. They used to be slightly cheaper too, but I don't know if that's still true. The biggest time of manual in US (at least in California) that I recall was during the 70's "gas crisis", because of the fuel economy concerns. Didn't have Prius' back then. ;)

I've never learned the compass directions between north, south, east, and west because of their finnish names. It's so much easier in english where they are southeast, northwest etc. :hehe:

And not a swimmer either, despite living in the "land of thousands of lakes".

2. I don't know how to use calculators, or barely. I always do math in my head or (Rarely) on paper/notepad.
Ummm someday life's going to throw some astronomical numbers at you, I'm not sure how long you've been living thus far. Unless you're some kind of half-alien freak a calculator is a very basic tool in the real world. paper won't save you when it can be tapped out in 5 seconds.

I can swim and ride a bike as well. I can whistle too, but my whistling is monotone.

Ah yes, that's something else I can't do.

I also don't know how to drive stick but considering I live int eh U.S., it's not that uncommon.

Ohoh, thought of something else:

I can't whistle using the two fingers in mouth technique. I've tried, can't make it work. :(

Never learned how to ride a Bicycle.
You and I share your number 1. I think the last time I tried was when I was 13 or so.
Never learnt to ride a bicycle. Makes three of us now. We should form a resistance against cycling! Meet me behind the bike shed later...*
I tried like once or twice at a very young age
I can't ride a bicycle.
I also can't ride a bike

I kinda feel bad for you guys.

I don't know how to maths.. or 99% of computer thingers...

It's been covered pretty good about cars with manual transmissions being rare in modern America, but around here there are plenty of older cars (muscle cars, pick-ups, and 4-wheelers) that only had, or where preferred to have, manual transmissions. Some older people (including some of my relatives) think that you shouldn't even be able to get a drivers license without knowing how to drive a manual.

Whistling, i can make a pathetic noise for a few seconds but not "whistle a tune". Brings me back to my grandma trying to teach me when i was a kid

Also can't drive a stick shift, i'm sure i could with an afternoon of trying, but i'm never around any vehicles that aren't automatic

I've never successfully been able to use a lighter.
I have tried it twice in my life I think, and failed both times. I then decided never to touch one again...

Your proably using a basic lighter, they have safety strips for kids, their annoying, take a screwdriver or a thin piece of metal and hook it under the strip around the knob. Make sure not to point it at yourself or anyone when taking it offf cause sometimes they pop off like that.

It should be easier.

I can't whistle, snap my fingers, or crack my knuckles.
