Something "common" you never learned

Post » Fri Mar 15, 2013 10:15 am

Basicly something that is considered as a "common thing to know" that you never learned.

As for me. I can think of two right off the top of my head.

1. Never learned how to ride a Bicycle. I can ride a Tricycle though.

2. I don't know how to use calculators, or barely. I always do math in my head or (Rarely) on paper/notepad.

What about you?

You and I share your number 1. I think the last time I tried was when I was 13 or so.

I tried like once or twice at a very young age... Then got a scooter.

Never learnt to ride a bicycle. Makes three of us now. We should form a resistance against cycling! Meet me behind the bike shed later...*

*Looks shifty and nervous.

Hmmm...

Never smoked or tried cigarettes. That is quite common.

Never learned to skateboard well. Which is popular where I am from and especially for people who surf(which I do).

Now i am drawing a blank.

I've never successfully been able to use a lighter.
I have tried it twice in my life I think, and failed both times. I then decided never to touch one again...

Got it. :ninja:

I had some really bad asthma attacks when I was younger so the whole idea of cancer in stick delivered via smoke seems like a bad idea.

Same here. Especially swimming. When we go to the pool, I either 'walk' in the water, slide down water slides, or relax on a floaty thing.

Damn...I see a lot of people who should not come to Hawai'i's beaches for a swim. I have 'rescued' * many a tourist who COULD swim. I know this is likely unnecessary but the ocean isn't anything like a lake or pool. Just in case any of you guys try to learn to swim in the ocean. I get really paranoid about mainland people who go swimming in the Pacific Ocean. Too many bad experiences.

*They tried to drown me while I tried to save them while I was out surfing. Panicking for one's life is a hell of a thing to experience in another individual.

Ironically, that fits the thread to some degree. I never rescued anyone who was drowning without them attempting to drown me. :( movies always make it out to be some clean rescue thing.

I did learn to ride a bike, but not until I was 11 or so, which made me the laughing stock of most of my friends, who all seemed to know how by the age of 4. And I wouldn't have learned if a friend of my parents hadn't been aghast that I didn't know how and took it upon herself to teach me. My father was disabled so he couldn't teach me, my mother was too busy/not a physical sort, and my two much older siblings were away in college. :)

I don't know how to pronounce a lot of words properly ... some of them fairly commonly used. This is because I read such words more than heard people speak them. Even after I know how they're supposed to be pronounced, I still tend to want to say them the way my mind "saw" them, leading me to just avoid using them in spoken conversation, or at least to acknowledge in a humorous fashion that I realize I may not be pronouncing them right. :P

I also can't ride a bike; I have a lousy sense of balance. I can swim, however.

I think swimming isn't as common as people make it out to be, sure if you live on/ near a coast it's somewhat natural, but in any sort of mainland/artic like place, swimming is just something the tropical people do in their humid, hot, dusty places :D

Atleast I think.........

I don't know how to do that fancy card shuffling thing where you bridge two halves of the deck. My dad said he knew how to do that since he was 7.

Same here, and I never learned to do anything while drunk because well, I've never gotten drunk. :P

There's actually a lot of things in regards to social interaction that I never learned, even though I get by somehow. :hehe:
A few other things that I can think of (especially considering my location)-
never learned to shoot a gun
never learned how to drive a car with a manual transmission ( I know how to, I just never had to drive one so I never got any practise)
never learned to ride a horse (I have rode on one though)
never learned how to weld (I do know how to solder)
.....
......
.......

That's all that I got for now.

I don't know, I'm totally landlocked and I learned how to swim when I was young, I haven't went swimming for some time, unfortunately.
