Starcraft Thread

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 1:49 pm

We have a Terraria thread, a Minecraft thread, a SWTOR thread and even a pony thread so why not this?

I've never really played the game but I am a fan of RTS, and I'm constantly hearing my friend talk about this game.

So do you guys (or gals) play this series, why do you like it and would you recommend it to others?

I have $60 I'm willing to spend and I don't know if I should buy Starcraft II or Skyrim.
Maybe someone could write a better OP for this thread as I know this one svcks.

I wouldn't buy either of those games if I were you. Starcraft 2 is weak and if you want to play Skyrim to your hearts content, you could probably get there just by renting it. (or buying used from GS and taking it back for full refund in 7 days).

I'm not sure what else to recommend right now, my mind has been spent on 2 essays just now.

If you enjoy RTS games that not only include C&C games then ignore the above comment. Daggerfall's opinion has been shared without any explanation, until he does gives a reason why he considers it "weak" then ignore it. I don't mean to offend you Daggerfall, but the one thing that annoys me the most on these forums are people putting forward their opinions as facts.

Which one you get largely depends on how much you like the Elder scrolls and how much you like RTS. I'm sure that you can get Starcraft 2 for much cheaper then Skyrim and I think its one of the best RTS' to be released in the last few years. If you haven't played the originals then I suggest you try them, they are classics for a reason after all.

I personally love the lore of Starcraft, its one of my favourites. The books based off of it are also some of the best game adaptations I've ever read.

My friends (Team Rainbow Dash if you must know) have started a Starcraft team for our clan, so we can take on the others five teams in Starcraft comps.
We already have 2 guys, and they are constantly encouraging me to get the game, but, it's just so expensive and I'm not sure I'd like it.

I'm the kinda guy who has lots of money but refuses to spend it cause it makes him feel poor.

StarCraft is kinda like Skyrim in the fact that with mods (maps), there is just so much content. The campaign is fun but not much in terms of base building. Against other people it's kinda of love it or hate it. You can download a demo but you can only play Terran and I think only vs. AI.

I'd say get StarCraft II if you're prepared for competition. Perhaps watch some replays first to see if you like the gameplay:

I enjoyed the game a lot but the battlenet never matched the older ones so it fell a bit short. Besides that the SC series is probably the best RTS series out there.
I used to play starcraft 2 a lot back in the day, I used to be in the platinum league too.

If you like competition, SC2 is the way to go. The multiplayer community is huge and international, and pretty much the closest thing to an e-sport there is. That's not to say that you'll be crushed the second you try and play someone. the learning curve is a little steep, but there's so much room for personal improvement and gain in terms of skill that it's very rewarding once you have some wins under your belt.

If you rage easily, it might not be that fun of a game, I will say that. Cheese rushes are a pretty bad problem in the lower leagues, so you might find yourself losing to a less-skilled opponent while you're still learning, simply because they used tactics some would say take less skill than others. (Cannon rush, 6-pool, etc.)

SC2 can be HARD... it's a very competitive game.... top players measure their clicks per SECOND.

In short.. give up dreams of EVER being a top SC2 player... honestly, it's not even a consideration. after losing your first consecutive 5-10 rounds, it should hopefully place you appropriately and then you'll win about every other game at that point.

I say download the demo of SC2 and try it out... if you MUST have more, get it... if you're on the fence? prolly not.

as for Skyrim...... dude, you JUST missed the Steam sale for 33% off yesterday lmao

CORRECTION: Looks like it still might be on sale O.o

I don't think Starcraft 2 is that hard. Its frustrating at times but not hard. If you aren't that good then you'll mostly be matched against people who also aren't that good. The matching system isn't perfect but you won't play pros if you're only in gold league. If you do well you'll get matched against better players.
Even if you don't like the competition you can play all the custom games that people have made like Battlecraft, Starbattles and Catch and Run.

I stated my feelings as an opinion, you stated yours as a fact. I didn't feel like putting forward any evidence because no one had directly challenged my opinion. Either way this is getting a bit off topic.

OP: I think I'm one of the few people who doesn't play Starcraft 2 for its competitive multiplayer. I'm more of a singleplayer RTS gamer, I like taking my time rather then rushing my opponent. Even though it doesn't cater directly to my tastes in the same way that something like Rise of Nations does, I still love this series. The Protoss, Terrans and Zerg are so far the most uniquely different factions I have ever seen in an RTS, I personally really like the story, I love the lore, even the dialogue of the units is great, but like I said in my other post it really comes down to what you like more. Do you prefer TES or RTS games?

You've got $60, so buy Skyrim for $40 off Steam, and the original Starcraft + Brood War for $20. It is a win win situation.

For future reference, it would be wise to understand that people don't need to say 'IMO' after every complete thought as a disclaimer. Anything stated in these forums by anyone is an opinion unless stated otherwise. This understanding is a fundamental prerequisite for anyone who would like to participate in an online discussion without being blindly confrontational.

I'm not being blindly confrontational, I just get annoyed when people state their opinions as fact which is exactly what you did. You don't need to say IMO every time, I don't think I have ever written that. It's simply a courtesy to all of the other people who will have differing opinions to make clear that what you are saying is your own opinion.

"Starcraft svcks" <- Opinion stated as fact

"I don't like Starcraft" / "I'd rather play Warcraft3" <- correctly stated opinions.

I tend to take any "fact" anyone ever posts as their point of view though..... you can't possibly believe anything you see or read on the internet without cross-referencing it with numerous and previously validated sources.

I said Starcraft 2 is weak. I don't know how much more opinionated you want it to be. I don't know about you, but when I want to quote facts, I generally... quote facts? Or announce that what I am saying is in fact, a fact.

Keep misreading everything if you wish.

Edit: Also, opinion as it may be as well, it is inaccurate to interpret 'weak' to mean 'svck'.

We're just going to have to settle this with a free-for-all Starcraft match. The races have been chosen, good luck!

I have played many many many RTS's (they're pretty much all i play on the computer) and 10 years later I am still playing Starcraft. The campaign is simply awesome.

EDIT: Oh you're talking about Starcraft 2. I dont really know much about that game. I didnt really like the presentation when I did play it for a while because it lacks the gothic feel and brutality of the first one.
