Stuck on a mountain road in a snowstorm

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 7:23 am

My job will require me to drive all over Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. One of the places I have to go to goes over 3 passes that are between 10,000 and 11,000 feet, one of which is Red Mountain. It was featured on a show called Dangerous Drives. 47 miles of switch backs and 1000 foot drops and no guardrails. You will have time to contemplate the mistakes in your life as you plummet into the canyon.

Anyway, I have been over that pass, and most others, in full on white out blizzards. One time, they closed the road after I started up as the weather conditions were so bad. When I came down the other side, the Sherrif and the CDOT folks were quite amazed that I made it. I have also been on roads that if it were not for the reflector markers on the little poles, I would not know where the road is. Kind of take it on faith that there is road beneath the rubber.

Reminds me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Road_Truckers. Not saying its the exact same thing, just reminnds me of it.

wow that's crazy o_O

At least I wasn't in any real danger so to speak, although that road I was on can be pretty dangerous if you're not careful.

Glad to hear you're alright. Watched the youtube video, dang that's a lot of snow! How much are you guys averaging right now per day?
I'm not sure but I can't park my car by the house any more because it'll just get snowed in. :/

I want to visit Iceland so bad...I'd rather wait until summer though, so I could actually enjoy a journey north of Reykjavík.
Glad you're OK...
I see you mentioned you live in Northern Iceland...I would have assumed you were in Reykjavík. Facinating land there.

Wow that svcks. Where I live we don't even get snow anymore, it's -15C and the air is like superdry and windy, it stings in the face just walking outside. The surface is also a mixture of frozen-solid snow and ice everywhere, there's basically no safe place to walk without risking breaking your leg.

I kinda want snow again.

I want to visit Iceland in the summer, don't you guys have these hot springs and you can even bathe in some of them?

So THAT'S what snow looks like! (Seriously, I've never seen it.) I can't imagine driving in that and being like "eh, no biggie". It stresses me out just looking at those pics.

I live in one of the sunnier parts of the US. It's never snowed here, well, I'm told we had "flurries" a couple of times but that they melted before they landed on the ground. I've never had the joy of nailing someone with a snowball... I really wanna do that before I die.

Good Lord! I have no sense of direction and I can tell I'd get lost up there. Everything kind of looks the same covered in snow. How many months of the year do you live in that?

That looks like hell.

Ew, snow. :( Been snowing almost non-stop here for the past week or so, but lightly - thankfully. It's only knee-high or so at this point. Please make it stop. :dead:

Wow I'm glad you made it home Ex, I know how frustrating it can be stuck in a snow storm. Especially on a mountain.

I wish I could get snow like that here in Mississippi. That's some of the most beautiful set of pictures I've ever seen, and it's hard for me to be impressed by things.

Its usually something about snow (To me at least) that makes scenes a lot more beautiful. Maybe it's a Christmas thing, idk.

Well, for me, snow is a rarity. It snows MAYBE 1-2 times year here on average, and 9 times out of 10 it's snow that's MAYBE 1 inch and sticks for about an hour or two. But I absolutely love fresh snow, there's something so beautiful about that silence in the air when it's snowing, the fresh pure white snow. It's so beautiful. For me it's one of life's little pleasures.

Weather where I am is an odd one. I am high enough for snow but it can be 5-10 degrees and there will be no snow. Most recent snowfall we had was a few years ago (I think 2009-2010). But it is the same as you: It would barely be an inch and only stay for a few hours.

But try living in that cold. Ugh

Not to insult your home Exo, after you get used to it you can't live anywhere else. But man that first year in a cold place, painful. Glad you're okay though!

Its very relaxing. Im not 100% sure why I love it, but I do. I also like the cold air.

Florida, then? I understand that it's never snowed there in recorded history. Or at least not enough to stick.

Snow is fun, but when it happens all of the time it just becomes annoying. "Oh great, it's snowing again. Okay, where did I put my windshield scraqer? Dammit, I wish my heater worked."
