Tea or coffee?

Post » Sat Oct 27, 2012 10:23 am

Setting aside all types of additives, sugars, cremes etc. and in regards to black tea and black coffee only (green or grey tea is not the subject here) in their strictly caffeinated state, which is better for you?

Is it better for your health to drink a hot cup of black coffee or a hot cup of black tea? Is either beverage good for you? Do the pros outweigh the cons? How many cups must you drink to benefit? When does it become harmful?

Do you drink coffee or tea? When? How often? Black? What do you put in your coffee or tea?

What is your favorite type of coffee or tea? Favorite brand? Favorite preparation method? Tea kettle? Coffee pot? Microwave water?

I'm drinking coffee now, but I usually drink tea. I don't put anything in either beverage, usually. Maybe once a year, I'll use a liquid hazelnut cream in the coffee, or some honey in the tea.

I drink black coffee the vast majority of the time, occasionally I'll have tea with a bit of milk.

Dunno what's best for you: don't care, they're both awesome. I like milk and sweetener in both, tried them without several times, didn't like. Full-fat milk for coffee, skimmed milk for tea. For specifics, I currently like mocha (by which I don't mean the chocolate stuff), freshly ground beans brewed in a cafetiere with not-quite-boiling water (tastes horrible if you let it boil); I'd rather use our espresso machine but it's still unwell. For tea, I prefer Assam-type blends.

I drink my coffee in pints (I mean the proper 20 floz ones), and usually have two or three pints a day. It takes three scoops of beans for a coffee, so I guess that's the equivalent of up to nine espressos a day. Oopsie.

99.9% of the time I drink strong black tea (PG Tips brewed for 4 minutes) with a little bit of milk, no sugar. I used to put sugar in it, but then I took http://www.booksatoz.com/witsend/tea/orwell.htm and never looked back.

Sometimes I'll also drink ginger tea, if my stomach is feeling upset or it's too late for caffeine. That takes about 15 minutes to brew, and the best kinds are 100% ginger root. It makes a nice warm spicy tea.

I only drink coffee very rarely, and only because you can not get good tea in any resturaunt or coffee house in America. Just about the only coffee I can stand is Cafe Americano, black with no sugar.

I dislike hot beverages. Ice either one and I'll love it. Prefer iced tea though.

Tea with milk, no sugar.

Coffee's nice on occasions (like after a meal or...well..when I just fancy coffee), but caffeine makes me really sleepy so I tend not to have it that much.

I like both equally...coffee is for the A.M., tea for the P.M. and the afternoon is up for grabs depending on how tired I am. I like my coffee like my ladies ha, dark and sweet with sugar and a splash of cream. I like my tea straight up and hot.

There's some health benefits to both but tea is better for you because of antioxidants. Here's a little excerpt on tea:

The health benefits of tea are one compelling reason: Green and black teas have 10 times the amount of antioxidants found in fruits and veggies, by one estimate.

Studies of humans and animals show that the antioxidants in black and green teas are highly beneficial to our health, says 82-year-old John Weisburger, PhD, senior researcher at the Institute for Cancer Prevention in Valhalla, N.Y.

"I've published more than 500 papers, including a hell of a lot on tea," says Weisburger, who drinks 10 cups daily. "I was the first American researcher to show that tea modifies the metabolism to detoxify harmful chemicals."

Green tea, black tea, oolong tea -- they all come from the same tea plant, Camellia sinensis. The leaves are simply processed differently, explains Weisburger. Green tea leaves are not fermented; they are withered and steamed. Black tea and oolong tea leaves undergo a crushing and fermenting process.

All teas from the camellia tea plant are rich in polyphenols, which are a type of antioxidant. These wonder nutrients scavenge for cell-damaging free radicals in the body and detoxify them, says Weisburger. "Astounding" aptly describes tea's antioxidant power, he tells WebMD. "Whether it's green or black, tea has about eight to 10 times the polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables."

Black and green both have different types of antioxidants than fruits and vegetables. Thearubigins, epicatechins, and catechins are among those listed in a USDA chart. All are considered flavonoids, a type of antioxidant. Brewed green and black teas have loads of those, the chart shows. (Herbal teas may also contain antioxidants but less is known about them, Weisburger says.)

"In my lab, we found that green and black tea had identical amounts of polyphenols," he tells WebMD. "We found that both types of tea blocked DNA damage associated with tobacco and other toxic chemicals. In animal studies, tea-drinking rats have less cancer."

Look at the world's big tea drinkers, like Japan and China. "They have much less heart disease and don't have certain cancers that we in the Western world suffer," says Weisburger.

I've had the displeasure of having both at the same time from a restaurant that I wouldn't recommend...
I don't care for coffee even though everyone in my family drinks it even before going to bed.

I mostly drink tea these days, usually 2 cups a day of black tea with some sugar.

When I do drink coffee I only drink plain black coffee, nothing added.

While talking tea does anyone know what type yellow box lipton is? I've heard its a blend of a bunch of black tea types, so does that make it super tea that's loaded with antioxidants? I happen to like lipton but I wonder if it's better/worse for you then a specific black tea variety

I imagine tea is better for you than coffee but despite that, I enjoy my coffee. I do drink a bit of labrador or wild camomile tea that I gather from our woods and meadow each summer. I like tea if I have a bad cold or upset tummy.

I like coffee. Sweetners and creamer at times but black much of the time. I drink way too much of the stuff. I make about 3 to 4 pots (10 cups) a day and am the main consumer of it. My hubby has about 3 or 4 cups a day and my son who just moved hom drinks about the same. The rest I drink. We usually use a drip coffee maker but I dearly love perked coffee. I don't use any sweeteners or cream in my tea. Just plain.

I'll drink both, but prefer tea. Not only is it healthier, but caffeine-free herbal teas are much better than decaf coffee in the evening.

Tea. I don't ever drink coffee. Admittedly, I don't drink tea often either simply because I'm always in a rush in the morning and it's always hot here. When I do drink tea lately, it's been of the lemon, honey-lemon, and lemongrass vareity. Before that I was in a green tea rut. It's actually been some time since I've had black tea.

ha true lipton probably takes all the leftover crap and blends it into a "master blend"....didn't starbucks start in a similar fashion? I remember hearing something about them recycling coffee grounds mixed with some cocoa beans to make it taste good but it could just be rumor.

I used to drink tea all the time and stopped drinking coffee for years until i had a baby...now i predominantly drink coffee and lots of it haha and any parent of babies can probably concur

Decalf Coffee with soy cream and sugar twin. Can't have any of the other stuff. Meaning if I order uptown I have to drink it black or wait to get home.

I will occasionally have a decalf tea, but it's not really frequent. A small pack lasted me almost an entire year.

I like plain old green tea. The cheap Chinese kind is good enough. I did have a more expensive Japanese brand once with bigger chunk of leaf that was great, but can't find it anymore. I don't touch all the variations, like lemon or cranberry green tea.

Darker teas are good too, but I don't have them often. The cheap brand of oolong the local Chinese place gives out is good. Earl Grey is good, but smells better than it tastes (I love that smell).

I avoid coffee. I don't like the taste much and my teeth are yellow enough as it is.

I prefer tea (just bog standard builders tea, milk, one sugar please) and only drink coffee (black, one sugar) occasionally. But there's nothing better than a nice cup of coffee and a bit of dark chocolate. Nom.

I used to have a job where I had unlimited access to good coffee. Days I was in the office I'd be hyper by the time I left.

Insomnia much?

Yup. Can't remember the last time I had more than three hours' sleep at a time, but that's not coffee-related, so I figure I may as well enjoy myself...
