The adaptability of the Elder Scrolls franchise to the MMO s

MMO's could be so much more. It's the least innovative genre at the moment. And I thought skyrim had mediocre gameplay. . . . ugh.
All my hate.

I just don't see a reason or a point to a TES MMO. From a business point of view it makes good sense. From a fans point of view, its something I will pass on.

It won'e be a TES mmo it will be an MMO with a TES skin and lore.

I didn't see a point in removing Attributes or Unlock Spell yet it happened.

There are roughly 23 million current active MMO subscriptions in the world paying a monthly fee every month to play per MMOdata

There are about 5 Million copies of all Elder Scroll games in the World....That only paid a one time fee to purchase the game.

You adapt your product to gain market share and paying customers....you do not make the market adapt to your product and expect paying customers to change for you.

It is a business decision, and one that can reap them substained monthly profit year after year that just does not exsist with console games

As a business decision its genius, i Agree. I just don't see it being anything special, which is a real shame.

It happened, and how did that make you feel? Just because it happens, doesn't make it right either.

Walt I'm not for the MMO either but your views and opinions are a bit drastic. Its a very smart business decision, Take a great selling franchise and branch it out. What company doesn't do that. I just think its going to rely on "Elder Scrolls" in the title to sell it.

That may very well be the truth there. They MUST deliver something special in order to stand out in a mature market.

Doesn't make it wrong either, all a matter of opinion.

That's why I'm being objective about a game I know next to nothing about.

TES Worlds and games have ALWAYS been perfect for an MMO setting, it has been the best single player game in a mmorpg's world for years now, its only right to make it a full on MMO.

You can say that about any setting really....

So... what MMO specific mechanics are you bringing in... exactly?

I was just trying to list ways that it seems ZOS is attempting to stay true to the idea of typical TES games. I'm sure they'll also have player economies, grouping, raids, cooperative combat abilities, etc.

I'm keeping an open mind; I think they'll do a good job of keeping the feel of TES while having a very fun and innovative MMO.

So far Elder Scrolls games have been sandbox games. TESO is going to be a themepark MMO. They should have made TESO a sandbox MMO. They do exist, they are a lot of fun, and if done well they can be successful. Becoming generic WoW clone #72 isn't going to make you a big and successful MMO. That market is SO oversaturated.

A themepark MMO a la WoW with the TES label is not a smart business decision, it's a play-it-safe decision caused by a tunnel vision and fear to innovate.

See I think the MMO clashes with the TES. TES has always been about YOU. MMOs are about EVERYONE. It seems like a conflict of interests here, but we will have to see when we get some more detail.

Paradigm shifts only work in FF XIII. I'm upset. I will try to keep an open mind but everything I see so far is terrible, my opinion

I loved it despite the flaws. Something about the whole mix of story/ost that made me fall in love with it despite it being a linear trainwreck and grindfest. :D

From what I read, it seems like they are trying to keep a sandboxy feel while avoiding the traditional thempark on rails. Did we read different articles? No quest hubs, explore where you want. Dynamic content. Guilds to join. Huge world to explore. Crafting. Player driven pvp end game. Open dungeons. Many other examples.. but maybe you should re-read it with a less jaded viewpoint.

That sounds like it would make an awesome single player game!

EDIT
Or small scale Co-op!

TES would make for a great MMORPG setting if there was enough quality control. I'd love to play a properly done TES MMO.

Unfortunately TESO is dropping everything that makes TES unique and fun to me, ensuring we won't ever get a TES MMORPG I'd want to play.

Like?

Well, for example, the fact that there are three main factions seems to me to be there to be a simplification of Tamriel's complexity to account for the limitations of the MMOs. Why not, rather, create many factions, allegiance, neither of which would be monolithic, as they'd know internal rivalry, divergences of opinions. Then, in all those factions, they could have drawn a network of possible allegiances. It would have provided something HUGE if the politics and diplomacy were implemented to high levels of complexity. For what we know right now... well, Any collaboration between Haafingar and the Bretons seems impossible, and all faction desire the same objective : the imperial throne. If the objective of the various factions was less clear, and if they could forge changing, original allegiances, if one could betray and help, infiltrate other factions, and so on, this would more reflect the level of complexity I expect from a TES game. Also, coherence and plausibility with respect to existing lore should be the main, very important guidelines. But well, maybe they are. So far, we don't know enough from the game to judge it. I surely hope that the game will be great, it'd be foolish to hope it'll fail. But the announcement hasn't managed to get me excited so far.

Rather, one should try to adapt the MMO mechanics to TES world. If one wants to acquire knowledge about an object, one does not change the object so that it is more suited for some specific measuring tool. Rather, one adapts the tool to the task which needs to be performed.

Well, i guess that also depends of what purpose the people will have with object:)
Money, originality or maby something in between. I hope they integrate the "MMO mechanics to TES world"
and also try to be a little crazy. Don't follow the flock all the way to the rock bottom, but stop at the
cliff edge and reflect:)
