The best fix at the moment.

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:16 pm

I have finally found the best "rageconfig" so that the texture popping is minimal, almost non-existent at times.

Fix for the texture problems.

1.Create a Rage shortcut with the following launch parameters:
+cvaradd g_fov 12 +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +image_anisotropy 4 +image_usecompression 0 +g_showplayershadow 1 +m_smooth 0

2.Create a notepad file in rage/base folder called rageconfig.cfg and add the following:

seta com_videoRam "1024" //sets the Video Card memory Set this to the amount you have in MB
seta com_maxfps "60" //limits the frames to 60 can be changed to what you desire
seta image_anisotropy "4" //Using the highest setting here but you can set as 2, 4 or 8
seta image_usecompression 0
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR" //filtering for light maps
seta image_preload "1" //Use preload images when ever possible
seta image_lodbias "-1" //LoD settings
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "1" //Sets up for using HQ gfx
seta image_ignoreLowQuality "0" //ignores the low textures
seta image_useCache "1" //Enabled Cache to allow the textures to load properly without popping
seta image_cacheMegs "125" //Cache size in Megabytes
seta image_cacheMinK "50" //Cache minimum size in kilobytes
seta r_swapInterval 1 //VSYNC 1 enabled, 0 diabled
seta r_useHighQualityPostProcess "1" //Fore High Quality post proccessing
seta r_shadowsHighQuality "0" //Fore High Quality shadows
seta r_displayRefresh "0" //keep it so the engine doesn't double render a frame
seta r_renderer "best" //highest rendering options
seta r_multiSamples "2" //Set this to 16 or 8 if you're having low-fps as 32 is the Max Multi-sampling
seta r_useHBAO "1" //Ambient occlusion
seta r_useRenderThread "0" // 0 Disable or 1 Enable threaded rendering useful for newer cards to increase performance.
seta r_visDistMult "1"
seta r_useMotionBlur "1" //use blur
seta r_skipBump "0"
seta r_skipSpecular "0"
seta r_skipNewAmbient "0"
seta r_shadows "0"
seta r_cgFragmentProfile "best"
seta r_cgVertexProfile "best"
seta vt_lodBias "-1" //LoD settings
//below is cache settings
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "8192"
seta fc_maxcachememoryMB "1024"

seta vt_maxPPF "16"
seta com_allowConsole "1"
seta com_skipIntroVideo "1"

seta cg_usecompression "0"
seta cg_useprecompressedtextures "0"

3. Go to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\ and create a folder called "id software" (without "). Then create a folder called "rage" (without ") inside that folder.

4. Run game and play.

I use the same and I thought I finally will be able to play and everything was perfect UNTIL I entered Wellspring - then all NPCs started flickering like Christmas trees. Oh, well guess I will wait for the 2 patches (ID/Ati).

Honestly, I have been doing a bunch of these and it really makes no significant difference for me. I get 60fps but Wellsprings is a flickered nightmare and I can see cracks in all the textures. Just gotta wait for updates and patches.

With the video card memory, is there a certain amount of your memory you should designate into it or just put the total number you have for memory? I have 4859mb so that is what I put in it.

Yeah, these changes actually make the game playable. Now I don't have the constant freezing every 10 seconds, the game looks beautiful, and I haven't nearly as many area transition crashes. The only issues are that my fps isn't great (but still playable) and I did get 1-2 freezes over about 30 minutes of play. I also noticed that my fps was getting worse over time, but I really don't care if I have to restart every 30 minutes atm, if I can at least play the game!

I believe the cracks are from antistropic filtering. if you are using an ati card, go into your ccc or vision center or whatever and turn off the AF and the gridlines in the txtures should go away. Worked perfectly for me and I would also like to add that this exact config file has indeed worked wonders for me as far the txture pop in. The only problem I'm still unable to find a good fix for is the artifacting/animation flickering in wellspring.

your efford to make the game works its really good i appreciate it really,
but you guys think its ok for a person, that only want to play the game , that he have to make folders, copy stuff, paste them, save it in an specific directory etc etc etc....
when the only suposed thing that he have to do is install the game and play it ? i accept to download and install patch, drivers etc. but not all this. i want to play a game, not to become a computer engenier.

If you're using an ati card once again, and this greatly improved my framerate, you should try setting your AA in the ccc or vision engine control, to override application settings and disregard the AA settings in game. If I set the AA to use application setting I get a balls slow framerate.

Well with this cfg at least game doesnt crash and doesnt tear but what happens, looks like random textures are being loaded randomly and all surroundings are sort of chaos, any idea how to fix that?

Yes i did, i have flashed 6950 if it changes anything...

Ive deleted all drivers and reinstalled NOW i dont have random textures but only VERY LOW quality textures, most of them just plain grey.

this helped a little, i still have horrible fps issues and the cracky flickering is from the AA but if you turn it off its even worse

4. Run game and play.

You do realize that only three of your shortcut command line settings are duplicated within the rageconfig.cfg? Also, for anyone using this file, please adjust the settings for VRAM and Anistropy to fit your rig. Settings to high will be just like you setting any of your other games to high. Basically, review each setting within the cfg file and if you understand what it does in relation to your normal gaming settings adjust as required. For instance, if you have a 2gb card, obviously you can set the VideoRAM to 2048 versus 1024. You may also find Anistropy set to 16 is ok. Consider enabling Threaded Rendering as well.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy Rage

FYI, this did not fix my inability to load any area. I'm mostly done with Wellspring, and stuck outside Wellspring. Loading any area hourglasses then crashes.

Have you tried the cache file fix? That seems to help with Loading crashes, its not a 100% fix, but it does certainly help.

Please elaborate sir. I haven't read about this.

This is Win 7 dependent as of the last time I read the specifics. Basically, create the following folder:

C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\id software\Rage - replace user name with your Windows Login name

add +fs_cachepath "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\id software\rage" to your shortcut - steam or physical media - again replace yourusername with your Windows Login name

In Steam right-click the game in your Library > Properties > Set Launch Options

Good luck, I hope it helps you continue to advance :)

Thanks OP - this fixed my CTD on WinXP/Dual Core/nVidia gtx480. Plus the game looks great with the 8k textures.

I did make the following changes for my system
Leave all nVidia Control Panel settings, including vsync at defaults, (application controlled, etc) except for enable triple buffering.
Set the seta com_videoRam correctly
seta r_useRenderThread "1"
Set the seta vt_maxPPF correctly: "8" for dual/quad core, "16" for 8thread (i7)

Also added the +vt_maxPPF to the rage launch options.

Also turned off Steam Community in-Game

If you are getting FPS issues, you can comment out a bunch of those. Get rid of ANISO filtering first and foremost - its makes no visible diffrence in this game and causes gridlines in textures and reduces fps. Here is an edited config that gives me 60 gps (btw - force enable vsync and tri-buffering in ur video driver to fix tearing and other issues).

//Custom Cvar setting + tweaks
set com_allowConsole 1
fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024
ik_enablesmoothing 0
jobs_numthreads 4
m_smooth 0
cvaradd g_fov 10
g_showplayershadow 1 //BTW - U SHOULD PROLLY LEAVE THIS OFF AS THE SHADOWS ARE NOT MODELLED CORRECTLY - THATS WHY ITS OFF BY DEFAULT - UR SHADOW LITERRALY IS JUST A BLACK CUTOUT OF UR BODY THAT FLOATS AROUND STIFF WITH NO ANIMATION
seta image_usecompression 0
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR" //filtering for light maps
seta image_preload "1" //Use preload images when ever possible
seta image_lodbias "-1" //LoD settings
seta image_useCache "1" //Enabled Cache to allow the textures to load properly without popping
seta image_cacheMegs "125" //Cache size in Megabytes
seta image_cacheMinK "50" //Cache minimum size in kilobytes
seta r_useHighQualityPostProcess "1" //Fore High Quality post proccessing
seta r_shadowsHighQuality "1" //Fore High Quality shadows
seta r_renderer "best" //highest rendering options
seta r_useHBAO "1" //Ambient occlusion
seta vt_lodBias "-1" //LoD settings
//below is cache settings
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "8192"

honestly - ur game isnt going to look any better by tweaking this [censored] - the textures were rendered at low resolution - no amount of tweaking will fix that. those settings just force ur video card to re-render certain things with no visual gain causing HUGE performance dropoffs. With this config my game has no pop in and looks great - well, great for Rage lol
